SEPTEMBER 1882

Fri. Sep. 1st. Bright but showery from SW early in morn and at 9, 10 and 11 and dark cloud came up from W at 1 1/2 and rained some and dropped rain most of eve. I went to creek with Clara early in morn and she crossed. Willie and I picked 20 pds cotton in bottom in Gate cut in morn, but rain stopped us at 10. I did nothing in eve. Lewis here in eve.

Sat. 2nd. Bright and warm, wind from NW. It sprinkled rain at 1 and rained S of here hard late in eve, but only dropped some here then. Willie and I went on cart to town early in morn and carried 1 1/2 bu corn to Lewis's mill (the 1st). I got 35 yds of bagging and bundle of ties and hank of twine from Kaiser on credit and got 13 yds calico from Strauss and 1/2 bu salt, 8 spools thread, 1 pk tacks and 2 pds bacon from Schaefer. We returned at 1. I gathered sk yellow corn, dried cotton on gallery, brought in some wood and found guinea's nest in NE corner of orchard with 12 eggs in eve.

Sun. 3rd. Bright and warm till 4 in eve and then we had a sprinkle here, but a hard shower at Pa's. All of us went to Sunday School in morn but Nellie. We came home to dinner. Nellie, Dixie and children went to Mr. D's in eve. I rode to Pa's. He and Clara went to Tigner's yesterday morn.

Mon. 4th. Bright and warm till 2 and then clouds and rain came up from SE and rained most of the eve. Children and I picked 70 pds of cotton by front gate in morn by 12. Nellie and Dixie washed and cleaned up house.

Tue. 5th. Bright, pleasant, NE wind in morn, warm in eve and rained N of here, but none here. Willie and I picked cotton on top H ridge in morn and got 70 pds. Dixie, Willie and I picked here by front gate in eve and got 70. Our Lizzie cow tried to break in sugar cane yesterday eve and this morning and this eve where the wind blew it down by the fence on the W side. I shot off my gun at noon and loaded it for her. I took 1 alt pill at night.

Wed. 6th. Bright and warm all day, some dark spots of clouds in eve, wind from E. I shot Lizzie with meat early in morn trying to break into sugar cane. Willie and I picked cotton on H ridge in morn. Dixie picked till 9 then Alice and baby came and she quit. I gathered and hauled in a cartload of boatcorn, which is the last of it, in eve. Alice and baby here all day. I took 1 alt pill last night, 3 doses cin today and 1 alt pill at night.

Thu. 7th. Bright and warm till late in eve and then we had a good little shower from SE. Dixie, Willie and I picked cotton on H ridge in morn and here by front gate in eve till rain and finished here all but one row. I took 1 alt pill last night and 2 doses cin today and drank cup of coffee late in eve.

Fri. 8th. Cloudy, dropped rain at 7 1/2 in morn and commenced to rain slowly from NE at 12 and lasted till late in eve but only rained a little. Dixie, Willie and I picked cotton on H ridge till 11 in morn. Nellie picked moss in morn and we helped her finish it in 1 hour after dinner. I cut a little oak NW of patch here in eve and started a bushel basket.

Sat. 9th. Dark clouds and cool NE wind but sun shined good deal through the day. It showered several times in eve. Willie and I picked cotton on H ridge till 11 1/2 in morn. Nellie and Dixie scalded Moss in morn. I rode to town in eve and got 10 yds of bed ticking and 3 of domestic and 1 gal syrup and 1/2 gal jug and 1/2 gal cotton seed oil and 3 pds sugar from Schaefer's. I got a basket from Fayette (Bentley) late in eve.

Sun. 10th. Cool, cloudy some, but bright and pleasant wind from N. All of us went to Sunday School in morn and on to Pa's. Dick Donnelly there. They got some chinquapins in eve there.

Mon. 11th. Clear and cool, wind from N. I worked on my bushel basket (which I com. last Fri eve) early in morn and finished all but rim and holes in bottom. Dixie, Willie and I began to pick cotton on H ridge at 9 in morn (it was too wet with dew to com. earlier) and picked there balance of day. I suffered yesterday, last night and today with pain and soreness under my left shoulder blade and through that side of my chest.

Tue. 12th. Bright, cool in morn, warmer in eve and some clouds and wind from NE. I worked on my 1 bushel basket early in morn. Willie, Rena and I picked 65 pds cotton on H ridge by 12. Dixie, Willie and I picked 85 in eve there.

Wed. 13th. Clear and pleasant, wind from N in morn and SE in eve. Willie and I rode in field early and cut some cane to make blow guns for Mr. Sims. Dixie, Willie and I picked on H ridge and finished old cotton there by 12 1/4 (the 2nd time). Lizzie broke in patch here in NE corner in morn and I fixed fence at 1 1/2. I took cart to D. Cohen's in eve and got a bbl of flour for Lewis -he and boys picked cotton for me in Gate cut in eve. I had some fever at night and sweated some and suffered with pain and soreness in left side under shoulder and stomach late in eve and at night.

Thu. 14th. Cloudy, wind from E and dropped rain at dark. I took 2 alt pills last night which worked me well today. I have cold and stinging in my throat. I made 1 blowgun early in morn. Dixie, Willie and I picked cotton in Gate cut most of day and got 230. I cut off Lizzie's eyelashes early in morn. I had no fever at night.

Fri. 15th. Cloudy some all day. A cloud passed around W and thundered that way nearly all morn and again in eve. Dixie, Willie and I picked cotton in Gate cut all day and got 260. Clara came at 1 and got some sugar cane. Very warm in eve. I was very tired at night and suffered with pain under my left shoulder and was feverish and sweated some.

Sat. 16th. Warm and cloudy some all day but bright. I burned out 2 blowguns early in morn (for Mr. Sims) and Willie and I picked 50 pds cotton in Gate cut by 11 1/2. I had bad headache all morn. I rode down to see Bob Johnson about fixing my cart wheel in eve -Cousin Dosia and Hattie Floyd here in eve. I had dull headache all eve and night.

Sun. 17th. Bright and warm, wind from SW. Dixie, children and I went to Sunday School in morn. Nellie stayed home. We came home to dinner and all of us went to Pa's and Nellie, Dixie, Alice, Mr. D, Bud, Willie and I rode to chapel but had no preaching. We got home at dark.

Mon. 18th. Bright and warm, wind from SW. Willie and I took cart to Bob Johnson's early in morn, returned at 10, picked 24 pds cotton in Gate cut by 11 1/2 and finished all that cut a 2nd time but 2 short rows. Dan and Bud picked over all of cut by front gate by 11 1/2. All of us picked in Persimmon cut in eve and got 250 pds.

Tue. 19th. Bright and warm, wind from S. Dan and Bud came again today and they, Willie and I picked cotton all day in Persimmon cut and on H ridge on young cotton and got 500 pds altogether all day. Dan and Bud picked about 400 each yesterday and today.

Wed. 20th. Warm and bright, wind from S. Some very rainy looking clouds late in eve. I reburned out the 3 blowguns which I burned out last week for Mr. Sims early this morn. Willie and I picked over his patch of cotton and finished last of my young cotton on H ridge (going over 1st time) and picked 15 pds in old cotton there in morn and 47 in eve. I gathered some corn by front gate between 1 and 2 o'clock and shucked it to grind and then Willie and I picked cotton on H ridge balance of day.

Thu. 21st. Bright and warm till late in eve and then a cloud came up from NW and rained a light shower and turned cool from N. Dixie, Willie and I picked cotton in old cotton on H ridge in morn and shelled 1 1/2 bu corn at 2 and picked and finished old cotton on H ridge late in eve. Nellie and Rena rode to Pa's in eve.

Fri. 22nd. Cool wind from N. Cloudy till 9 1/2 in morn, bright in eve. Willie and I picked cotton in Gate cut all day and got 160 pds. I was very tired at night and suffering with aching pain under my left shoulder which I have had for some time. I put on my flannel shirt early in morn.

Sat. 23rd. Clear and quite cool early in morn, wind from N. I rode to town early in morn, carried 3 blowguns to Mr. Sims, I carried 1 bu corn to Lewis's mill. I got 4 pds coffee, 2 pds sugar, 1 of soda, and 1/2 doz thread from Schaefer (all the Jews closed up) and 2 water buckets for Ma, and pr shoes for Susanna. I returned at 11 3/4. I rode to Bob Johnson's in eve for cart but he hadn't finished it. Clara came in eve.

Sun. 24th. Clear and cool, wind from NE. All of us went to Sunday School in morn expecting preaching but Mr. Brown didn't come. We went to Pa's for dinner. Dick Donnally there and Beau Chambers. Ma and girls gave me money to get 3 pr shoes for them.

Mon. 25th. Some dark clouds and wind from NE but bright and pleasant. Dixie, Willie and I picked cotton in far corner of Gate cut in morn. Nellie, Dixie and children picked over cut by front gate in eve. I rode to town and got a pr of shoes apiece for Ma, Alice and Clara and 6 pds sugar for Ma and 26 yds calico for quilts for Nellie from Kaiser and borrowed $4 from him to pay for cartwheel. I got 4 yds bleached domestic and bottle of Wizard oil from Morgan.

Tue. 26th. Bright and pleasant, wind from N. Very dry weather. Dixie, Willie and I picked 35 pds cotton in Gate cut by 8 1/2 in morn and finished that cut and then picked in Persimmon cut till 12. I went to Bob Johnson's in eve and got my cart and paid him $3 for fixing it. I nailed down flooring in cart late in eve and greased it.

Wed. 27th. Bright and pleasant, wind from W. I walked to Pierce's early in morn and borrowed quilting frame. I hauled corn for Lewis and finished it by 12. I rode to Cohen's in eve to see about ginning but his gin was not ready to run. Lewis and boys picked cotton in Persimmon cut for me in eve. Nellie and Dixie quilting all day.

Thu. 28th. Bright and warmer, wind from S and some clouds. Willie and I picked in young cotton on H ridge in morn and Willie, Rena and I picked Willie's patch and in old cotton on H ridge in eve. Nellie and Dixie quilting most of day.

Fri. 29th. Bright and warm, some dark and rainy clouds and wind from E. Willie and I picked and finished old cotton on H ridge by 12. Ma here all day. Nellie and Dixie washed at the spring in morn. Willie and I picked cotton in Gate cut in eve.

Sat. 30th. Cloudy and began to shower from S at 8 1/2 in morn and lasted till 1. A pretty good rain altogether and is much needed for it was very dry. Willie, Rena and I picked 30 pds in Gate cut of cotton and rain ran us home at 8 1/2 in morn. I cleaned and shelled some of yellow corn for seed at 10. I rode to Cohen's in eve and got 5 1/2 pds pork and 4 yds bleached domestic. Bud here late in eve.
