OCTOBER 1918

Tue. Oct. 1st. Clear and cool in morn and warm in eve. Willie and Dud and Bee Martin hauled in 2 loads of corn and pulled some hay and turned over that pulled on yesterday today. I pulled burrs in slips E of here in morn.

Wed. 2nd. Bright but some dark clouds and very warm in eve and rained a hard sprinkle of rain in night. Willie rode Daisie to town in morn and Buck was sick in town today and Willie and Marion returned at dusk. I hoed up a strip of ground on West side of new garden in morn and manured part of it for onions.

Thu. 3rd. Bright and warm and no rain but looked like it. Willie and Dud and Bee Martin hauled in corn with Ned and big Ella today. I trenched ground and packed manure (stable) and put in trenches on W side of new garden for onions in morn. Wiley came at 10 at night and brought 2 grey mules for Willie bought from Johnston.

Fri. 4th. Clear and warm but a good breeze from E all day and very dry. Willie and Dud hauled in pea hay all day with the new grey mules and Wiley hauled in his corn with Ned and big Ella. I packed one turn of ashes and 3 of hen manure and put in two rows on West side of new garden - making 5 rows manured there for white onions by 9 1/2 in morn - and brought some yams and tomatoes from field by 11 in morn.

Sat. 5th. Warm and cloudy but no rain and very dry. Willie and Dud hauled in a load (and last) of pea hay early in morn. I set out white onions on 5 rows on West side of new garden in morn and finished them. Willie drove Buck to town in eve.

Sun. 6th. Warm and cloudy but no rain and very dry. I brought some yams and tomatoes from field in morn. Willie and Minnie and children and Lucile walked to SS in eve.

Mon. 7th. Warm and cloudy and very dry but rained around some in eve in thunder showers. Willie and Dud pulled corn in morn and hauled it in 2 loads in eve and loaded up 2 wagons with Dud's cotton late in eve to take to gin on tomorrow. I saved some okra and late pole bean seed in morn.

Tue. 8th. Warm and cloudy and rained around some in thunder showers today but only sprinkled a little here. Willie drove the grey mules to our wagon and Dud drove big Ella and Ned to Wiley's wagon and carried 2 loads (and last) of Dud's cotton to gin in morn and returned at 4 in eve. I brought some yams and tomatoes from field in morn.

Wed. 9th. Cloudy and rained slowly early in morn till after sunrise and a cloud came up from S at 11 in morn and we had a good soaking rain - and much needed too - and we had another shower in eve from S. Willie and Dud didn't work today. Wiley hauled in his corn today and got nearly wet in morn and in eve too.

Thu. 10th. Cloudy from S and a thunder cloud came up from S at 12 1/2 and we had a big rain till late in eve and quit at 4. Willie and Dud hauled some posts to back of field in morn to repair wire fence and didn't work in eve. I brought some yams and tomatoes from field in morn.

Fri. 11th. Cloudy and we had a big rain at 8 1/2 to 11 1/2 in morn and some little in eve. We did nothing but get wood and feed. Leah came in eve and rinsed out clothes washed on yesterday.

Sat. 12th. Cloudy and no sun and rained a little slowly early in morn. Willie drove Buck to town in morn and returned in eve. I brought some yams and tomatoes from field in morn.

Sun. 13th. Cloudy but sun shined some and cool from N. No SS in eve. Steve and little Mary are sick - suppose to be Influenza.

Mon. 14th. Bright but cloudy and no rain and cool from NE. Wiley got Willie's mules and wagon early in morn and carried 2 loads of corn to his new home in morn and returned just at dark. Willie and Marion and Dud pulled corn in patches N and E of here today. I dug some potatoes in field early in morn and hoed in Irish potatoes in old garden till 11 in morn.

Tue. 15th. Cloudy and no sun and sprinkled rain some at 12 to 2 in eve and very cool in morn from E and warmer in eve. Willie and Marion and Dud hauled in corn all day. I hoed Irish potatoes in old garden in morn and finished all to hoe there. Luster James came at 12 for Lucile and they left in eve.

Wed. 16th. Cloudy and wind from E and rained a hard sprinkle at 9 in morn and no sun today. Willie and Dud pulled corn in morn and hauled in corn in eve. Marion sick today and Nellie too. I manured one row on W side of new garden and set out onions on it in morn and took down the pole bean arbor there.

Thu. 17th. Cloudy and a damp SE breeze and sprinkled rain a little in morn and we had a hard shower from S at 1 to 2 in eve and again at dusk and some through the night. Willie and Dud pulled corn in morn and hauled it in 2 loads in eve. I trenched and manured ground on West side of new garden and set out some multiplying onions there in morn.

Fri. 18th. Cloudy and warm and rained in showers some in morn from S and a little in eve too. Willie and Dud didn't work today. I packed 2 turns of stable manure in new garden early in morn and set out last of multiplying onions on West side by 10 in morn.

Sat. 19th. Cloudy but sun shined some and no rain and pleasant. Dago drove Willie's team and wagon and carried a load of corn for Wiley and Wiley carried a load to his new home in morn and Dago returned after dark. Willie drove Buck to town in morn and returned in eve. I brought some yams and tomatoes from field in morn.

Sun. 20th. Bright and pleasant from N and no rain in sight. Nellie and Marion both better and up today. None went to SS in eve on account of Influenza.

Mon. 21st. Cloudy and no sun and a little cool and damp but no rain. Willie and Dud and Hannah and 3 children picked peas in patch E of here today. I brought some yams and tomatoes from field in morn.

Tue. 22nd. Cloudy and a damp breeze from SE all day and rained some in the night. Dud carried a load of cotton to gin in town early in morn and Willie rode Buck there and they returned in eve without ginning the cotton (left it there). I hoed some of turnips in new garden in morn.

Wed. 23rd. It rained last night and most of today in showers from SW. Willie didn't work today. I got wood for Leah to wash under wood shed early in morn and brought some yams and tomatoes from field early in morn.

Thu. 24th. Cloudy and a little cool from NW and no rain and sun shined some. Willie drove the grey mules to our wagon and Dud drove Wiley's team and wagon and carried 2 loads (and last of our cotton) to gin early in morn and returned late in eve without ginning the cotton. I repaired a rocking chair today.

Fri. 25th. Cloudy and wet most of morn and bright some in eve and no rain. Willie and Dago took our mules and Wiley's to gin early in morn (Dud is sick in bed) and they only got one bale of cotton ginned and the gin broke down and they returned at 3 1/2 in eve. I brought some yams and tomatoes from field in morn.

Sat. 26th. Cloudy and no sun and sprinkled rain some in morn and thundered in NW late in eve but didn't come here. Wiley carried a load of corn to his new home in morn. I gathered the walnuts in morn. Willie and Minnie drove Buck to town in eve.

Sun. 27th. Bright, nearly clear, and a very cool wind from NW all day and no rain in sight. All of us home all day.

Mon. 28th. Clear in morn and about cold enough for a little frost but some clouds in eve and a damp breeze from SE and a good deal warmer and rained a little in night. Willie and hands picked peas in patch E of here today. I dug some potatoes in field in morn and brought them and 2 canes from field and Willie swept out our chimney just after dinner.

Tue. 29th. It began to rain early in morn and rained steadily and hard part of time with some thunder till late in eve - a very big fall of water. We did nothing but get wood and feed and milk. Wiley here most of day.

Wed. 30th. Bright, nearly clear, and a very cool wind from NW. Willie rode Buck and Dago took mules to gin (in town) in morn and got Willie's cotton - 3 bbls ginned - and they returned in eve. I got wood for Leah to wash early in morn and dug some potatoes in field by 11.

Thu. 31st. Clear and windy and very cool from NW. Willie and hands picked peas today and Willie hauled them late in eve. I set out gaps in winter onions on W side of new garden in morn. Carmel and Marion drove Buck to Wiley's new home in morn.
