OCTOBER 1882

Sun. Oct. 1st. Cloudy and dropped rain early in morn but bright and warm balance of day. Willie and I rode to Sunday School in morn, Nellie and Dixie stayed home. I rode to Pa's at 2 in eve and borrowed Hunter and Clara, Miss Jennie Chambers, Cousin Dosia, Nellie, Dixie, Lewis, John C., Beau C., Bud and I rode to hear Mr. Rogers preach at Baptist Church in Woodville at night. Mr. D came and stayed here untill we returned.

Mon. 2nd. Bright and warm wind and clouds from NE. Light shower passed around here at 1 and 2. Dan and Bud came and we gathered and hauled in 12 cartloads of my corn all day and finished all of it but a load or 2 in lower end of Dewberry cut.

Tue. 3rd. Bright and warm wind and some clouds from E. Willie and I went on cart to Pa's early and we hauled in 11 loads of his corn all day. I arose with a pain in left side of my head in morn and went in right side in eve and I had it all night.

Wed. 4th. Bright and pleasant, wind from the E and some clouds. I arose 2 hrs before day with severe headache and vomited good deal of bile. I tried the "Wizard Oil" but it did no good. Rena and I rode to Pa's early and we hauled in 9 loads of his corn all day. We got up Alice's Robert horse at 1 and 2 in eve. The headache left me in eve.

Thu. 5th. Bright and cool in morn, warm in eve and some dark clouds. Willie and I rode early to Pa's. We hauled in 6 loads of corn in morn and 2 in eve and finished making 28 loads in all (about 185 bbls at least). We then hauled 2 loads of blocks and Willie and I got home before sunset. Mr. Sims gave me 6 cushaws on way home.

Fri. 6th. Cloudy some all day and rained a light shower at 2 from S - enough to run. I gathered and hauled in a full load of corn from Dewberry cut by 10 in morn-which makes 13 loads in all-about 70 bbls. Dixie and I shelled 1 1/2 bus of corn for bread at 11. Mr. Sims came at 11 3/4 and got some sugar cane. Willie, Rena and I went in field to pick up corn but found only very little. I grabbled some potatoes out of my patch("the Queens") which is the first and are fine.

Sat. 7th. Bright and warm and damp S wind and dropped rain little at 3 in eve. Dark clouds passed around W late in eve. Willie and I went on cart to town and carried 2 1/2 bus corn to Lewis' Mill and got it ground. I got 1 gal molasses, 2 gals coal oil (1 for us and 1 for Alice), 20 pds flour, 6 yds twilled cotton, and 3 pds coffee from Kaiser and paid all but 45 cts for all of them. We returned at 1. Dan came in eve and got some sugar cane.

Sun. 8th. Bright most of day but some dark clouds. It sprinkled rain at 11 in morn and thundered around in eve. Wind from S, very warm weather and dry too. All of us went to Sunday School in morn. Nellie, Dixie and Rena went to Mr. D Chambers for dinner and Willie and I came home and went by Pa's and on to Mr. D. C.'s for Nellie,

Mon. 9th. Bright but dark rainy clouds all day and very warm, drizzled early in morn and we had a hard little shower at 2-enough to run. Dixie, Willie and I picked my white peas in morn and finished them by 11 1/2. Willie and I picked cotton here by front gate in eve after the shower and it was wet. Lewis painted some picture frames for Nellie in eve.

Tue. 10th. Bright and warm wind from N. No appearance of rain. Dixie, Willie and I picked peas in Cane hollow (in hull) till 12 in morn and we picked cotton here by front gate in eve.

Wed. 11th. Bright and warm, wind from W and dry. Dixie, Willie and I picked peas in Cane hollow and on hillside there in morn- a part in hull and part beat out. Dixie and Willie picked cotton here by front gate in eve and finished this cut late in eve. I rode to Cohen's in eve to see about ginning. His gin will start tomorrow.

Thu. 12th. Foggy early in morn and bright and warm balance of day with wind. Dixie, Willie and I picked peas on hillside below potatoe patch in morn, some in hull and some beat out. Willie and I picked peas in Cherry cut- began on lower side and beat out all we picked which was 1/2 bu. Alice, Clara and baby came here in eve.

Fri. 13th. We had a hard rain with some wind and thunder from NW at sunrise and rained slowly till 9 and then bright and cool balance of day from NW. The wind blew down my cane - over half of it - but it is ripe enough to cut owing to the long dry weather. I shelled my yellow seed corn early in morn. Nellie and Dixie washed in house in morn. I walked to Harrison's at 9 to see him about selling some of my cane and then cut cane till 12. Lewis and I got up Dixie's colt at 1 and 2. We caught her at Mr. D Chambers'. I cleaned out spring and cut cane balance of eve.

Sat. 14th. Bright and cool, wind from N. I cut cane all morn and about 1 1/2 hrs in eve. and finished all but little left to eat. Ben got 50 stalks to sell at 1. Dan came in eve to borrow some meal. I rode to Cohen's late in eve and returned just at dusk. I got $1 worth of flour for Ma. F Coon gave me a mess of beef at Cohen's.

Sun. 15th. Bright and cool, wind from SW in morn and NW in eve. All of us went to Sunday School in morn. Nellie, Dixie and children stopped at Mr. D's for dinner and I came home. Mr. D's cows in his field in morn and Mr. Sims gray mule, and Pierce's horse in there in eve. I rode to Pa's in eve and carried some sugar cane. Summerville came to Mr. D's and Nellie, Dixie and children ran home. Clara came home with me late in eve and borrowed some meal.

Mon. 16th. Bright and warmer, damp SW wind. Dixie, Willie and I picked peas on lower side of Cherry cut in morn (most of them in hull). F. Coon came at 1 and paid me $5 for Lu's calf and Willie and I went with him and caught it at Andrew Corners. Dixie, Willie and I picked and threshed about 1/2 bu of peas by path by little persimmon late in eve. Nellie had trouble all day with machine and broke 6 needles. A cloud came up from NW at dusk and rained a good shower.

Tue. 17th. Bright and warm wind from NE. I rode to Cohen's in morn and stayed there till 11 1/4 to see his gin start. I returned a 12 1/4 and picked and threshed 1/2 bu of peas by path by persimmon in eve. Willie and Rena picked cotton in his patch and on H ridge in young cotton in eve.

Wed. 18th. Warm and cloudy, wind from SW in morn and a dark cloud came up from NW at 2 and rained all eve and all night slowly. I picked 65 pds peas in hull by path by Persimmon cut in morn. Dixie and Willie picked cotton in Persimmon cut in morn. I did nothing in eve. Alice and baby came in morning and stayed all day and night.

Thu. 19th. It rained slowly all last night and all day today from N. Hard in morn and misty like in eve and cleared off at dark. I did nothing but get in some wood in morn and Willie and I grabbled sack of potatoes at 11 in rain. Alice and baby still here. I rode to creek in eve and it was up. Lewis came in eve and went home and brought back some flour to us late in eve.

Fri. 20th. Clear and cool wind from N. Dan came for Alice early in morn. I cut 2 poles and put on manure pen and cleaned out spring early. Willie and I picked peas in hull in morn and beat them out in eve in long rows in Cherry cut. I rode to Sims' at 1 to try to get hands to pick cotton for sugar cane and I stopped to see Charles.

Sat. 21st. Bright and cool wind from N. Willie and I picked some peas on hill next to Persimmon cut in morn and Anthony F, Mary T and Anne A picked 290 pds cotton there in Persimmon cut by 11 and I paid them in sugar cane at 2 1/2 cts per stalk. Willie and I went on cart to town in eve and got a bbl of flour-$7.25, $1 worth of coffee -6 3/4 pds, 1 pr cable screwed shoes for myself - $2, 1 pr cloth shoes for Nellie-$1.50, and 1/2 doz thread-30cts, being $12.05 in all from Kaiser and paid for all. And then I got a pr shoes for Willie, pr stockings apiece for him and Rena and box of blacking on credit. I brought out some ammunition for Mr. Sims from McGehee's and got 7 machine needles for Nellie for 10 cts. We returned at good dark. Lewis rode Dixie's colt first time in eve.

Sun. 22nd. Bright and cool and pleasant weather. Dixie's mare Mattie miscarried in stable in morn. Nellie, Dixie and I had spat about glass. All of us went to Sunday School and Mr. Brown preached and he and all of us went to Pa's for dinner. Leon Bufort and Dick D there to dinner too.

Mon. 23rd. Clear and cool, wind from N. I rode to Cohen's early in morn to see about ginning. Mr. Womack and Mr. D came there. I got 50cts sugar there. Came by Mr. H's gin and saw Jim Parker but couldn't get him to haul my cotton, but got Pierce and Steve Lee to promise to come on next Wednesday. I rode to Pa's at 1 to 2. Willie and I picked cotton here by front gate in eve.

Tue. 24th. Cool and clear, wind from W. Willie and I picked peas in hull on NW end of Cherry cut in morn and on S end in eve and threshed them out. We got 50 pds in hull and 1 1/2 pks threshed ones in morn and about 3 pks in eve. F Coon brought us a piece of beef early in morn and borrowed cart and brought it back late in eve.

Wed. 25th. Clear, cool and pleasant weather. Bud came at daylight and Pierce and Steve came and we hauled 4 loads of my cotton (which is all picked) to Cohen's and got it ginned and made 4 light bales weighing 1585 altogether and sold to Cohen at 10 cts. I returned after dark and paid Pierce and Steve $4.50 for hauling. Bud ate supper here and I gave him a $.

Thu. 26th. Bright and pleasant, some clouds, wind from SW. Willie and I picked in morn and finished patch of cotton by front gate by 12 and picked all eve in Gate cut. Nellie, Dixie and Eliza washed and scoured in morn. Pierce hauled last load of my cotton seed from Cohen's by 11 1/2 in morn. I grabbled sack of potatoes at 11. Lucy gave birth to 5 pups night before last.

Fri. 27th. Some dark clouds in morn and thundered in NW at sunrise but bright and pleasant in eve, wind from SW. Willie and I picked cotton all day in Gate cut. Nellie rode to Pa's at 1 to 3 in eve.

Sat. 28th. Some clouds and wind from S but bright and pleasant. Willie, Winnie, Chloe, Maria and I picked in young cotton on H ridge till 11 in morn. They picked for sugar cane. I rode to Cohen's and he paid me for my cotton and I went on to town and paid Kaiser $71.25 (all my account) and got a black coat, vest and hat for myself-$9.50, and pr socks 25 cts, and pr #6 ladies shoes for F. Coon-$2, paid for all and got a gal of new molasses from Jacobs-70 cts. They had speaking and barbecue in town today. I came out of town with Pa and Lewis and got home at dark.

Sun. 29th. Bright and pleasant, some dark clouds, wind from SW. All of us went to Sunday School in morn. Lewis rode Mattie colt. Mr. Brown preached in morn and we had dinner on the ground and he preached again in eve. I wore my new coat, vest and hat. I paid Mr. Brown my quarterage in morn, which was $5.

Mon. 30th. Foggy till 10 in morn and then bright with dark clouds and damp SW wind and thundered in NW late in eve. Dixie, Willie and I picked cotton all day in Gate cut. I paid Dixie $2 and 1 a piece to Willie and Rena at noon for picking cotton.

Tue. 31st. It misted rain some early in morn but bright and warm most of day. Wind and clouds from S. Dixie, Willie and I picked cotton all day in Gate cut. I rode to Pierce's at dark to get his hands to pick cotton and I went in to see Charles.
