MAY 1915

Sat. May 1st. Bright and warm and dry. Dud drove the mules to wagon to town in morn and Willie rode Sandy and they returned at 12 3/4 with 1 1/2 bbls of meal and a bbl of flour and 100 lbs. of salt. Willie rode Sandy to see cattle in eve. I hoed and finished okra in NE corner of patch E of here in morn.

Sun. 2nd. Bright but cloudy all day and dry. Willie and Minnie and children (all but Carl) went to SS in eve.

Mon. 3rd. Cloudy some all day and rained out W of here with thunder in eve but only sprinkled here. Willie and Marion and Dud planted corn in Sims' bottom till 9 1/2 in morn and planted pindars till 12 and finished them and they drove 6 of our cows and the black bull from Elmwood pasture around up the creek home in eve. I hoed pepper and some tomatoes in Sims' hollow in morn and helped to shell pindars too in morn. Minnie and I picked some strawberries for Mrs. Lanehart in eve.

Tue. 4th. Cloudy, and no sun all day, and dropped rain at 11 in morn and sprinkled shower at 4 in eve and quit. Willie and Dud and some hands hoed corn all day and got wet in eve but didn't quit. I hoed tomatoes in field in morn and got wood and water and fed in eve.

Wed. 5th. Bright but cloudy some all day and no rain and pleasant from S. Willie and Dud and some hands hoed corn all day. I hoed tomatoes in field in morn and helped Minnie and children to pick some strawberries just after dinner and we sent a bucket of them to Cousin Mary and Mrs. Lanehart and her 5 youngest girls here in eve and ate some of the berries.

Thu. 6th. Cloudy and windy from S all morn and began to rain slowly at 1 in eve and lasted all eve and most of night with thunder and a big fall of water in all. Willie and Dud and some hands hoed corn in morn and didn't work in eve on account of rain. Marion and I walked to Elmwood in morn to drive old Kittie with a young calf home but we didn't and we got home at 11. We got wood and fed and milked in rain late in eve.

Fri. 7th. Bright after 8 in morn. It sprinkled rain some before that time. Willie and Dud fixed water gaps and cut some poles S of our field in morn and they hauled them to hilltop of H ridge in eve to put up arbors for our beans. I cut 3 dead limbs out of pecan tree near old cotton house and cut up some wood and shucked corn in morn and got wood and water and fed in eve.

Sat. 8th. Bright and pleasant from N and no rain in sight. Willie and Dud and I put up arbors for pole and butter beans on hilltop of H ridge by 11 in morn. I killed bugs on the beans and thinned them and sprinkled them with ashes too. Willie and Minnie drove Sandy to town in eve and returned at sunset.

Sun. 9th. Bright, but some clouds, and pleasant from N. Nellie and Carmel and Marion drove Sandy to Dixie's in morn and returned late in eve. Minnie and I picked some strawberries in morn for us and Rena too. Willie and Minnie and Charles walked to SS in eve and Carl stayed with me.

Mon. 10th. Cloudy some but bright and pleasant and no rain in sight. Willie and Dud hoed Irish potatoes in NE corner of oat patch in morn and they ran cultivators in corn middles in Gate cut with Sandy and Julia in eve. Marion hoed corn most of day in field. I hoed and set out some plum tomatoes in field in morn and hoed in garden some in eve.

Tue. 11th. Some clouds but bright and pleasant from N. Willie and Dud ran cultivators in corn today. I hoed bean patch on hilltop of H ridge in morn and some in eve and finished them. Marion hoed corn today and finished all of 2nd planting.

Wed. 12th. Bright, but cloudy some all day, and a little cool from N. Willie molded corn in Gate cut and Dud ran cultivator in corn today. Marion thinned corn in eve ahead of Willie molding. I got wood for Leah to wash early in morn and hoed watermelons and cucumbers in field by 10 1/4 and thinned okra in NE corner of patch E of here in eve.

Thu. 13th. Bright, but some clouds all day, and pleasant from NE. Willie molded corn in Gate cut and Marion thinned corn ahead of him. Dud ran cultivator in corn with Sandy today. I hoed tomatoes in field in morn and hoed around the peach trees out E of here in eve.

Fri. 14th. Bright, nearly clear, and calm and warm. Willie molded corn and Dud ran cultivator in corn today. Marion thinned corn ahead of Willie. I hoed tomatoes in field in morn and packed 4 bu. of ashes and put on watermelon patch in hollow beyond road in eve.

Sat. 15th. Bright and warm and dry from W. Willie molded corn in morn and Marion thinned corn ahead of Willie and Dud ran cultivator in corn in morn. Minnie sent her eggs to town by Wiley and Rena in eve. I hoed pepper and tomatoes in field in morn.

Sun. 16th. Bright and warm and dry. Beulah Smith and children came in morn and left at 2 in eve. Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion went to SS in eve and Bro Ellis preached there. Nellie stayed at Lanehart's last night and again tonight. Nora and Jessie both sick.

Mon. 17th. Bright and warm and dry from N and no rain, but a thunder cloud in sight in N late in eve. Willie molded corn and Dud ran cultivator in corn and Marion thinned corn today. I planted 2nd paper of eggplant seed and hoed tomatoes in field in morn and hoed some in garden in eve.

Tue. 18th. Bright and warm and appearance of rain. Willie molded corn and Dud ran cultivator and Marion thinned corn ahead of Willie. I packed some cow manure in garden and put around some sugar corn and between rows of lettuce and hoed the corn and some onions in morn.

Wed. 19th. Bright and warm and dry but a pleasant wind from SE. Willie molded corn and Marion thinned corn and Dud ran cultivator. I hoed bean patch on hilltop of H ridge in morn and in eve awhile and finished.

Thu. 20th. Bright and warm from S but a pleasant wind from S. Willie and Dud molded corn and plowed some in patch E of here today. I scraped planted potatoes (1/2 patch) on hilltop of Cherry cut in morn and got wood and water and fed in eve.

Fri. 21st. Bright and warm and dry. Willie and Dud barred off late corn today. I scraped planted potatoes in morn and finished patch on hilltop of Cherry cut. Nellie and Carmel and Marion went with Rena and little Wiley to school exercises in town at night.

Sat. 22nd. Cloudy some, but bright and warm, from S and dry. Willie and Dud barred off corn and plowed out planted potatoes on hilltop of Cherry cut in morn and Willie drove Sandy to town in eve. I got Sandy from pasture early in morn and Charles and I rode Sandy in Elmwood pasture and saw and salted all of our cattle there but Rose's brown heifer.

Sun. 23rd. Bright and warm and dry but dropped rain here in eve and lightning in N and NE most of night. Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion and Charles went to SS in eve and Nellie and Carl went to Wiley's.

Mon. 24th. Bright after 9 1/2 in morn and warm and no rain in sight. Willie and Dud molded corn and Marion thinned corn ahead of plowing. I hoed cucumbers and pepper and cantelope in field in morn.

Tue. 25th. Bright and warm and dry. Willie and Dud molded corn and Marion thinned ahead of plowing. 3 hands hoed corn today (and last planting). I hoed tomatoes in field in morn and finished them and I drew water for washing in eve and Marion and I cut oats for horses late in eve.

Wed. 26th. Bright and warm and dry. Willie and Dud molded corn (2nd planting) and finished at sunset. 3 hands hoed corn today. I got wood and water for washing and hoed all of okra patch in NE corner of patch E of here by 10 in morn. Bernice here today. We had a birthday dinner today (W's). I went to creek with Marion and Charles and little Wiley in eve.

Thu. 27th. Cloudy and a damp S wind all morn and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 1 1/2 in eve and we had a good rain with some wind and hail till 3 and quit. The first rain since 3 wks. ago and it rained again most of night and a big fall of water in all. Willie and Dud laid by corn in Gate cut all morn and 3 hands hoed corn in morn. I picked some dry peas in garden in morn. Willie and Dud rode to Elmwood in eve and tried to rope old Kitty cow but didn't get her.

Fri. 28th. It rained most of last night and till 10 1/2 in morn and quit and bright all eve and clear all night. Willie and Dud and Wiley and Harrison worked on our wire fence at creek all eve drawing it in - on account of creek caving. I set out some tomatoe plants in field and some in garden in eve.

Sat. 29th. Clear and calm and no rain in sight. Willie and Wiley and Dud and Harrison worked on wire fence at creek all morn and finished. I set out gaps in planted potatoes on hilltop of Cherry cut by 10 in morn and shucked corn by 11 1/2. Willie and Marion drove Sandy to town in eve and got a freezer and some ice and we had ice cream at dusk. Wiley's children came. Rena is sick and Wiley didn't come. I was feverish all eve but rested well at night.

Sun. 30th. Bright till 11 in morn and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 2 in eve and we had a hard shower till 4 and rained slowly late in eve. Earl and Rubie C and Bernice and Carmel went on horseback to Jack D's in morn (Carmel rode Sandy) and they got wet coming home late in eve. Nellie walked to Wiley's and back in eve. I felt better today.

Mon. 31st. Bright, but cloudy some all day, and rained a little slowly in night. Dud cut down briars and bushes in field today. Willie rode Sandy and Marion walked and went to Elmwood and roped and brought home Kittie and her young calf by 11 in morn and Willie rebedded ground for slips in Cherry cut in eve with the mules. I cut weeds and briars near wire fence just E of here in morn and shelled some bread corn and found 3 hens' nests in eve. I was feverish and achy at 11 in morn and took 1 Lane's pill which worked me well late in eve.
