MAY 1913

Sat. May 10th. Bright and warm and no rain here but some clouds in eve and thundered far off. Willie and Ben hoed corn in morn and Willie rode Sandy in Elmwood pasture in eve and drove Jessup's red heifer home with a red bull calf. I hoed around and thinned watermelons and cucumbers in Sims' bottom in morn and hoed onions on W side of garden in eve. I was very feverish at night and took one Bonds pill but rested well all night.

Sun. 11th. Bright and warm most of day and rained around in thundershowers far off in eve but none here. Wiley and Buddy went to Jack D's in morn and Rena and John dined here and Gordon too. Bernice and little Nellie and Carmel went to Lanehart's in morn. Willie and I picked nearly one peck of strawberries early in morn and we sent part of them to Mrs. Lanehart. I took one pill last night which worked me well all morn.

Mon. 12th. Bright and warm most of day and no rain here but some far off in eve. Willie and Ben molded corn with the mules today. I hoed winter onions and bush beans on S side of garden in morn and shucked corn and planted some pumpkins in hollow E of here in eve.

Tue. 13th. Bright and warm and no rain here but thundered and rained around far off late in eve. Willie and Ben molded corn today with the mules. I hoed pole beans and okra in hollow E of here in morn and some in eve too. I shucked some bread corn in eve too and milked 7 cows. Bro. Hopper came late in eve and here all night.

Wed. 14th. Foggy early in morn and bright and warm from S balance of day and a thunder cloud came up from S at 4 in eve but only dropped a little here. Willie and Ben molded corn today. Bro Hopper went to Wiley's and Lewis' in morn. I hoed okra and butter beans in hollow E of here in morn and some in eve.

Thu. 15th. Bright and warm from S but a damp breeze from S and no rain. Willie and Ben molded corn today. I finished hoeing bean patch by 9 in morn and dug holes and stuck part of butter beans then by 11 1/2 and shelled some bread corn in eve and patched up big gate on road too and helped Minnie to milk 8 cows.

Fri. 16th. It began to rain slowly from SW with some thunder at 7 in morn and lasted till 11 - a good rain in all and just enough to wet ground well and was needed too - and bright and warm all eve. Willie and Ben hoed watermelon patch in eve. I shelled some bread corn in morn and winnowed one bbl of bread corn in eve and set out some bell pepper in garden too and helped Nellie to milk 8 cows.

Sat. 17th. Bright and warm and no rain. Willie and Ben molded corn in morn and Willie and Carmel and Marion drove Sandy to town in eve. Marion rode Josie and I Sandy to Ogden's mill in morn and returned at 11 1/4 with 13 pecks of meal. I got wood and water and put up a milk shelf in new cow pen in eve and helped Minnie to milk.

Sun. 18th. Bright and warm most of day but a thundercloud passed around SE from NE at 3 to 4 in eve and near too but only dropped a little here. Marion and I picked some strawberries at 8 to 9 in morn. West and his wife here at 9 3/4 to 11 in morn. Nora L. here most of day. Wiley and his family went to his Pa's on yesterday morn and returned late this eve.

Mon. 19th. Bright and warm and no rain here but rained around in thundershowers most of eve and not far off. Willie and Ben finished molding oldest corn by 4 in eve and plowed cane and sweet potatoes in patch E of here late in eve. I dug holes and stuck butter beans in hollow E of here in morn and till 4 in eve and finished last of them.

Tue. 20th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight today. Willie and Ben plowed corn in Gate cut today sowing peas and plowing out middles. I hoed tomatoes in Sims' bottom in morn and hunted up some timbers to make a gate on S side of new cowpen in eve. Mae McCraine and 2 of her little children here today.

Wed. 21st. Warm and cloudy and a thundershower came up from SW at 10 in morn and we had a little shower then and another at 11 1/4 and thundered around all eve and sprinkled here slowly till 4 3/4 and we had a hard one then and began to rain slowly at 9 in night and lasted all night slowly. Willie and Ben layed by corn till 5 in eve and got wet then. I hoed tomatoes in Sims' bottom till 10 1/4 in morn and rain ran me home and I worked on a gate to S side of new cowpen in eve and milked in rain and got wet some.

Thu. 22nd. It rained slowly all last night and all today in sprinkles and little showers and wet ground very wet and needed but didn't run but little. We did nothing but get wood and feed and milk. I fixed back door to Minnie's room in morn.

Fri. 23rd. Bright and cool from N and no rain in sight. Willie marked some pigs early in morn and Willie and Ben hoed some watermelons and cut some weeds in ditches in field in morn and Ben in eve too. Willie drove Sandy to town in eve. I hoed cucumbers in Sims' bottom in morn and finished gate on S side of new cowpen in eve. Katie and Lucile James came at dark.

Sat. 24th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from N and no rain in sight. Willie and Ben barred off corn in morn. I hoed pepper in Sims' corner in morn and I was sick all eve but packed some ashes to pole bean patch E of here and helped Willie to milk.

Sun. 25th. Bright and cool and no rain in sight. I walked to Wiley's and back in morn. Katie and Lucile James went home in eve. All except me went to SS in eve and Bro Hopper preached there. I found a brown hen setting on 11 eggs in eve and put them under a red hen in stable.

Mon. 26th. Bright and cool early in morn but warm after 10 in morn. Willie and Ben barred off corn and whip peas today. I finished hoeing pepper in Sims' corner at 9 in morn and hoed part of watermelon patch there by 11 1/4 and I patched door to mules' stable in eve. Mrs. Hughes and Mrs. Julia Mathis came in morn and here all night.

Tue. 27th. Bright and pleasant and no rain in sight. Willie and Ben barred off corn and peas and pindars in morn and layed by corn in eve and 3 hands hoed corn today. I hoed watermelons in Sims' corner in morn and hoed some in garden in eve. Mrs. Hughes and Julia went to Dixie's and Lewis' in morn and left for home in eve.

Wed. 28th. Bright, nearly clear, and pleasant and no rain in sight. Willie and Ben layed by corn today and 3 women hoed corn. I hoed watermelon patch in Sims' corner in morn and finished it and I hoed bush beans in garden in eve.

Thu. 29th. Clear and pleasant and no rain in sight. Willie and Ben layed by corn today. I hoed pole beans in hollow E of here in morn and hunted hens nests and helped Minnie to milk in eve.

Fri. 30th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Willie and Ben layed by corn today. I hoed okra and butter beans in hollow E of here in morn and finished there.

Sat. 31st. Bright and warm and dry. Willie and Ben plowed corn in morn and finished oldest corn. Willie and Nellie and Charles drove Sandy to town in eve. I hoed pumpkins in hollow E of here by 11 in morn and Carmel and I got up Sandy from pasture by 11 1/2.
