MAY 1891

Fri. May 1st. Bright, warm and dry. R. Whetstone stayed here last night and left early in morn. Willie and I hoed and finished cotton in big Cane hollow (1st time hoeing) by 11 1/4 in morn. Pa walked to Clara's in morn and stayed till evening. Mary and Tigner came there on yesterday eve and left this eve. I rode Salome to schoolhouse to a patrons meeting in eve and put Salome to Forest and she took him first time.

Sat. 2nd. Bright and dry from SW. All of us but Nellie went to chapel in morn to Alliance dinner. Willy rode Flirt, Rena went in buggy with Cousin Mary and children and Dixie and I rode Salome to our buggy and we were at chapel most of day. Nellie and Pa stayed home.

Sun. 3rd. Bright, warm and dry from SW. All of us home all morn. Pa, Nellie and Willie walked to Clara's in eve and I rode Salome there in eve.

Mon. 4th. Bright and warm and very dry. A thundershower passed around E from SW at 3 to 5 and another SE late in eve but none here. I barred off cut of cotton by front gate on W side by 8 in morn with Salome and rode her to schoolhouse at 8 1/2 to 11 1/2 and Miss Mittie Fugler taught 4 scholars. Pa and Willie scraped all day and finished cut of cotton by front gate on W side late in eve. I barred off cotton in Pine corner in eve.

Tue. 5th. Bright, warm and very dry from E. Thundered in E late in eve. I finished barring off cotton in Pine corner and fence row cut in morn and barred off in Cherry cut all eve with Salome. Pa and Willie scraped cotton all day in pine corner.

Wed. 6th. Clear and quite cool from NE - very dry. I barred off last of Cherry cut of cotton and 1 acre of whip peas on poor NE end of Cherry cut and all of H ridge cut of cotton today with Salome. Pa and Willie scraped cotton all day in Pine corner and fence row cut.

Thu. 7th. Clear, cool and dry from NE. Pa and Willie scraped cotton all day. They finished fence row cut and scraped some in Cherry cut. I harrowed corn middles most of day with Salome - once to row. I rode Salome to Mr. D Chambers at 1 to 3 and she would not take horse.

Fri. 8th. Clear, cool and dry from NE. Pa and Willie scraped cotton all day in Cherry cut and finished it in eve. I harrowed all of Persimmon cut and Cane hollow cut of corn in morn - once to row. I rode Salome to creek at 1 to 2 1/2 and met John Chambers but she refused horse and I rode her to Cohen's at 3 1/2 to 6 in eve.

Sat. 9th. Bright and nearly clear and quite dry. I harrowed corn middles in cut by front gate on E side and little patch beyond by road some once and some twice to row by 10 in morn with Salome and did nothing in eve. Mr. A Newman and Rosa Miller came here on yesterday eve. A Newell's wagon brought a bbl of meal and 2 sacks of oats from Cohen's late in eve.

Sun. 10th. Bright, nearly clear and quite dry. All of us home all day. Florida Floyd came at 11 3/4 and here till late in eve. Mr. A Newman and Rosa Miller went home from here at 3 1/4 in eve. Dan here a while in eve.

Mon. 11th. Cloudy from NW and dropped rain little late in eve. I began to lay by corn early in morn and laid by SE circle of H ridge and some on hilltop of Cherry cut (Adam's Early). I plowed Salome all day. Pa and Willie scraped cotton all day on H ridge.

Tue. 12th. Bright but cloudy some from NW and dropped rain a little at dark. I laid by corn all day with Salome. I finished Adam's Early corn on hilltop of Cherry cut and plowed some in perssimmon cut in long part or middle of it. Pa and Willie finished scraping cotton on H ridge in morn and they hoed whip peas on poor NE end of Cherry cut in eve and finished them.

Wed. 13th. Bright, cool and dry from NW. I barred off corn in Gate cut with Hattie till 10 1/2 in morn (the 1st plowing she has done since her colt was born). The ground was dry and hard. Pa and Willie scraped cotton in Gate cut all day. Nellie and I drove Salome to buggy to town in eve.

Thu. 14th. Bright and very dry from N. I barred off cotton in Gate cut with Hattie and finished barring off last of our cotton by 10 1/2 in morn and sowed some peas in corn in Cane hollow by 11 1/4 and plowed corn there all eve with Salome. Pa and Willie scraped cotton in morn in Gate cut and they went to Elmwood to help Dan and Bud cut two bee trees in eve.

Fri. 15th. Bright and very dry from NW. I plowed corn all day with Salome. I finished Cane hollow by 3 1/4 and plowed balance of eve in persimmon cut. Pa and Willie scraped some cotton in Gate cut. Pa was sick but worked some. Dixie and Rena drove Larry to our buggy to Joe Miller's in eve.

Sat. 16th. Bright and very dry from NW. I plowed corn most of morn in Persimmon cut with Salome. Pa and Willie scraped cotton in Gate cut a while in morn. I cut down weeds and briars on W side of yard with hoe in eve.

Sun. 17th. Bright and very dry but cloudy some late in eve and dropped rain little. Nellie and Cousin Mary went to Mr. Bank Fugler's in Lewis's buggy in morn and came back at dusk. Lewis, West, Lilah, Bud and Cousin Tom dined with Pa, Willie and myself today. Dixie and Rena came home from Joe Miller's late in eve.

Mon. 18th. Bright but cloudysome and damp SW wind. I plowed corn all day in Pine corner with Salome. Pa and Willie scraped cotton most of morn on poor E or NE end of Gate cut and went over some of corn with hoes in eve.

Tue. 19th. Bright and warm from SW and dry. I finished plowing corn in Pine corner by 9 in morn and plowed a little patch by road S of here with Salome by 10 1/4 and plowed cut by front gate on E side in eve with Salome and finished laying by last of my corn with plow. Pa and Willie finished scraping last of our cotton in morn by 11 1/2 on poor E end of Gate cut. They went over some of corn with hoes late in eve.

Wed. 20th. Bright, warm and dry from S. I hoed in our garden in SE circle of H ridge most of morn. I drove Hattie to cart to Cohen's and let her little colt follow in eve and got a bbl of flour, sack of oats and some other things on credit and got home by sunset. Pa and Willie hoed in their new ground cotton SW of Cherry cut most of day.

Thu. 21st. Bright, warm and dry. I hoed in Cane hollow corn on SE circle of H ridge and finished there by 3 1/4 in eve and went over cut of corn by front gate on E side with hoe late in eve. Pa and Willie hoed in Cane hollow cotton most of day.

Fri. 22nd. Bright, but cloudy, warm and dry. I arose with a headache and lay on pallet and vomited till late in eve and got up then. Pa and Willie hoed in Cane hollow cotton all morn and some in eve. Cousin Corinne Miller came here from Lewis's late in eve and stayed all night.

Sat. 23rd. Bright, warm and cloudy some all day. It rained a little sprinkle here at 3 1/2 in eve and thundered around most of night. The headache left me in morn. I put up an arbor for my lima beans on SE side of H ridge in morn. Willie rode Salome to Cohen's and they cut a bee tree down on our spring branch (a large white oak) in eve but didn't get any honey.

Sun. 24th. Bright and dry from NE. Thundershowers passed around some in eve but none here. Nellie and Pa went to Clara's in morn and there all day. I rode Salome there in eve.

Mon. 25th. Bright and warm most of day. We had a good little shower with some hail from SW at 2 in eve. I harrowed all of sugar cane middles and slip ground in new ground twice to row and plowed a little of cane in morn with Salome and plowed cane most of eve with her. Pa and Willie hoed cotton in Cane hollow most of day.

Tue. 26th. Bright, but cloudy and warm and rained around some in thundershowers in eve but only dropped little here. I plowed Hattie most of morn in new ground and finished sugar cane and rebedded slip ground and barred off seed potatoes by 11 and Pa and Willie scraped off potatoes in morn and hoed in their Cane hollow cotton in eve. I harrowed cotton middle with Salome all eve - twice to row - and finished cut by front gate on W side and more than half of H ridge.

Wed. 27th. Bright, dry and cool N wind and no rain. I began to mold cotton in morn and plowed out cut by front gate on W side with 4 furrows with Hattie in morn and harrowed middles in whip peas and cotton on NE side of Cherry cut all eve with Salome (twice to row). Pa and Willie hoed cotton in Cane hollow most of day.

Thu. 28th. Clear and pleasant but dry from NW. I plowed cotton all morn on H ridge with Hattie with 4 furrows (1st plowing) and harrowed cotton middle all eve in Cherry cut with Salome - twice to row. Pa and Willie hoed cotton all day in Cane hollow.

Fri. 29th. Clear and pleasant but dry from NW. I plowed cotton most of morn on H ridge with Salome and finished that cut (1st plowing). Nellie and I drove Hattie to buggy to town in eve. Hattie's colt is sick today and yesterday. Pa and Willie hoed most of day in Cane hollow cotton and finished it in eve. John Fugler and Gussie ate supper here.

Sat. 30th. Bright and dry from W. I hauled out a cartload of old cotton seed and manure from henhouse (mixed) and put around some Welborn and whip peas on NE end of Cherry cut by 9 in morn and plowed the peas with 4 furrows with Hattie at 9 to 11 3/4 and plowed all that was manured and about half of patch. I planted some Calico peas in corn in Cane hollow on SE circle of H ridge and went over most of peas (plowed in morn) with hoe in eve.

Sun. 31st. Bright and warm from SW. Nellie and I drove Hattie to buggy to preaching in town in morn. Dan, Seymour and Dan Fugler dined here and Seymour and Dan Fugler left on our buggy at 2 1/2. Bud here a while in eve.
