MARCH 1918

Fri. Mar. 1st. Bright and very warm. Willie cleaned up ground and Dud and Bunges broke ground. I planted Irish potatoes in old garden in morn and finished them and I shucked corn and got wood and fed in eve.

Sat. 2nd. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Willie cleaned up ground and Dud and Bunges broke ground in morn. Minnie and Carmel drove Buck to town to dentist in morn. Willie rode Daisie to hunt cattle in eve. I hoed lettuce and radishes and onions and mustard in old garden in morn.

Sun. 3rd. Bright and warm. I walked to Wiley's and back in morn. Bro Tom and his 2 little girls dined here. All home all day.

Mon. 4th. Bright and warm. Willie cleaned up ground and Dud and Bunges broke ground. I packed 4 turns of manure in new garden and set out 4 q'ts. onion sets (3 rows) on E side of garden in morn and I shucked corn and got wood and water in eve.

Tue. 5th. Bright but some clouds and warm from SW. Willie cleaned off ground and Dud and Bunges broke ground today. I packed 3 turns of manure in new garden and fixed 2 rows to set out some strawberry plants early in morn and planted some bush beans next to cow pen too and I shucked corn and got wood and water and fed in eve.

Wed. 6th. Cloudy but bright and warm from SW. Dud and Bunges broke ground most of day and Willie cleaned up ground. They planted sugar cane at 1 to 4 1/2 in eve. I planted butter and pole beans and okra and squashes and cucumbers in new garden in morn and shucked some bread corn in eve.

Thu. 7th. Bright and a little cool in morn but warm in eve. Willie cleaned up ground in morn and rode Maud Est to hunt cattle in eve. Dud and Bunges broke ground today. I hoed mustard and onions and lettuce and radishes in old garden in morn.

Fri. 8th. Bright and warm and getting too dry. Dud and Bunges broke ground today. I scraped 5 rows of Irish potatoes and hoed 5 rows of strawberries in old garden in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water in eve.

Sat. 9th. Bright and warm from SW and dry. Willie drove Buck to town in morn and returned at 12 with meal and he rode Daisie to hunt cattle in eve. Dud and Bunges broke ground in morn. I cut up stove wood early in morn and hoed all of peas in new garden by 11 in morn.

Sun. 10th. It rained a little sprinkle last night and thundered and lightning N of here and cool and cloudy some but bright from NE today. All went to SS in eve but Nellie and Charles and Carl.

Mon. 11th. Bright and warmer today from SE and dry. Willie planted some Irish potatoes in field in morn and Dud and Bunges broke ground in morn and they and Willie planted corn in eve (our first). I cut sticks and stuck peas in new garden in morn and shelled some seed corn in eve.

Tue. 12th. Bright and warm from SW. Willie and Dud and Bunges planted corn all day. I cut sticks and stuck peas in new garden in morn and shelled some seed corn and shucked corn and got wood and water in eve. Miss Mittie Fugler and her sister, May, here in eve.

Wed. 13th. Bright and warm from SW and dry. Willie and Dud and Bunges planted corn today. I stuck peas in new garden in morn and shelled some seed corn in eve. Bernice and Frank Rodgers here in eve.

Thu. 14th. Bright but cloudy some and windy from SW and lightning early in night and wind changed to N just after dark. Willie and Dud and Bunges planted corn all day and finished first planting. I stuck peas in new garden in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water in eve.

Fri. 15th. Cloudy and very cool from NE. Willie and Dud and Bunges planted sweet potatoes in field in morn and Dud and Bunges broke ground in eve and Willie rode Maud Est and found all of his cattle in eve. I stuck peas in new garden in morn.

Sat. 16th. Cloudy and cool from N and no sun today. Dud and Bunges broke ground in morn and Willie planted some watermelons in field and Willie rode Buck to hunt cattle in eve. Charles and Carl and Jack and I went fishing in morn but didn't catch any.

Sun. 17th. Cloudy some but bright and cool from N. I walked to Wiley's and back in morn. Charles went with me. Nellie walked to Wiley's in eve and Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion went to SS in eve and Bro Dawson preached there. Shelly Percy and wife and Sarah Percy came in a car at dark and ate supper here and Shelly and wife left at 9 in night and Sarah stayed all night.

Mon. 18th. Cloudy and cool from NE. Dud and Bunges broke ground today. Willie jabbed some holes on 1 1/2 pea rows and helped me to stick them in morn and he cleaned off ground in eve. I stuck short canes on sides of pea rows in morn.

Tue. 19th. Cloudy and rained a nice little shower here early in morn - but not enough to run for ground was very dry - and cloudy some all day and cool from N. Dud and Bunges broke ground today and Willie cleaned off ground. I got short sticks and canes and stuck peas in morn and some in eve.

Wed. 20th. Foggy and wet till 9 1/2 in morn and bright and pleasant balance of day from W. Dud and Bunges broke ground and Willie cleaned off ground today. I cut short canes and sticks and stuck peas in new garden in morn and finished them and shucked corn and got wood and water in eve.

Thu. 21st. Bright and warmer today. Dud and Bunges broke ground today and Willie cleaned off ground in morn and walked and drove up a red cow with a young calf from on creek in eve. I thinned peas in garden in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water in eve.

Fri. 22nd. Warm and cloudy from SW and a thunder cloud came up from W just after dark and we had a good rain and much needed too. Dud and Bunges broke ground today and Willie cleaned off ground. I thinned and replanted beans in new garden and planted some blackberry seed and 2 squash seed in new garden in morn.

Sat. 23rd. Bright, nearly clear, and warm from SW and a thunder cloud came up from W at 10 in night and we had a good shower of rain. Willie drove Buck to town in morn and returned at 11 3/4 with meal. Dud and Bunges broke ground in morn. I set out some Volunteer tomatoe plants (about 25) and planted one more row of cucumbers early in morn and carried a Volunteer watermelon and set it in Willie's patch by 10 in morn.

Sun. 24th. Bright and cool from N and no rain at night. All went to SS in eve but Nellie - she walked to Wiley's.

Mon. 25th. Clear and cool from N. Willie cleaned up ground and Dud and Bunges broke ground today. I hoed onions and mustard and lettuce and strawberries and part of Irish potatoes in old garden in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water and fed in eve and found a swarm of bees near cow pen and tried to hive them in eve.

Tue. 26th. Bright, nearly clear, and very cool early in morn but warmer in eve. Willie cleaned off ground all day and Dud and Bunges too in morn and they broke gorund in eve. I hoed and finished Irish potatoes in old garden in morn.

Wed. 27th. Bright and cool and dry. Willie cleaned off ground and Dud and Bunges broke ground today. I cut dead limbs out of pecan trees near old cotton house in morn.

Thu. 28th. Bright and cool in morn and warm in eve from S. Willie cleaned off ground and Dud and Bunges broke ground today. I hoed around 3 fig trees out E of here in morn (September figs) and put hen manure around them.

Fri. 29th. Cloudy and a damp wind from SE all morn and a thunder cloud came up from SW at 2 in eve and we had a good soaking rain till 5 1/2 and much needed too. Willie and Dud and Bunges rode to Surgett's early in morn and drove our cattle around by Veal's and up creek and put them in our pasture and returned at 12 3/4. I hoed and put manure around 2 fig trees toward cow pen in morn.

Sat. 30th. Cloudy and cool from E but no rain. Willie and Dud and Marion and Bunges dipped cattle early in morn and Willie and Minnie drove Buck to town in eve. I set out the Everbearing strawberry plants received on yesterday in new garden early in morn and brought Maud Est and colt out of field and put them in pasture.

Sun. 31st. Cloudy and cool in morn and warmer in eve from S. All home today and all but Nellie and me went to SS in eve. Joe Miller came late in eve and went back to Lewis' after supper.
