MARCH 1917

Thu. Mar. 1st. Cloudy in morn and bright in eve but rained a little shower in night. Dud and Sidney broke ground today. Willie cleaned up ground. I hoed strawberries and mustard and radishes and lettuce in old garden in morn.

Fri. 2nd. Cloudy and began to rain in showers at 2 in eve and lasted till 4 1/2 from SW with some thunder. Dud and Sidney broke ground in morn and went back after dinner and got nearly wet and quit. Willie cleaned up ground in morn. Bro Tom here at 2 to 4 in eve. I hoed Irish potatoes in NW corner of old garden and repaired fence just SW of big gate on roadside by 11 1/2.

Sat. 3rd. Cloudy and began to rain from NW with thunder at 9 1/2 in morn and lasted all day and most of night - a big fall of water in all and very chilly too from N. Dud and Sidney broke ground till the rain in morn.

Sun. 4th. Cloudy and rained and snowed some with a very cold wind from N all day till late in eve and cleared off then and calm and cold and clear all night. All home all day. Lanehart dined here.

Mon. 5th. Clear and a very white frost and hard freeze in morn but calm and all thawed by late in eve but some ice. Willie rode Sandy to see cattle in morn and Dud and Sidney cleaned up ground all day and Willie too in eve. I made 3 boxes for hens' nests in morn.

Tue. 6th. Clear and a slight freeze in morn but wind from S and some clouds in eve and warmer. Dud and Sidney cleaned up ground today. Willie helped Lanehart to catch 3 of his shoats in Luckett field early in morn and went to help Wiley to catch 2 of his but they didn't find them and Willie and Minnie put our meat in bbls in eve. I made 3 boxes for hens' nests in morn.

Wed. 7th. Cloudy and sprinkled rain some at 11 to 12 and wind changed to N and cool in eve. Dud and Sidney broke ground today. Willie helped Wiley to catch 2 of his hogs in morn and cleaned up ground in eve. I made 3 boxes for hens' nests in morn.

Thu. 8th. Bright and cool from NE. Dud and Sidney broke ground today and Willie cleaned up ground. I picked grass out of old strawberries in morn.

Fri. 9th. Bright and pleasant from S but rained a little in night. Willie cleaned up ground and Dud and Sidney broke ground. I picked grass out of old strawberries in morn.

Sat. 10th. Cloudy and a damp wind from SW and dropped rain a little in eve and bright all night. Dud and Sidney broke ground in morn and Willie cleaned up ground and Willie drove Daisie to town in eve. I picked grass out of strawberries (old ones) in morn.

Sun. 11th. Warm and cloudy some but bright from SW. Willie and Nellie drove Sandy to B C's just at daybreak and Mrs. Chambers died at 11 in morn and Willie and Nellie returned at dark. No SS in eve.

Mon. 12th. Bright but cloudy some and warm and windy from SW. Dud and Sidney broke ground today. Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Elma walked to Mrs. Chambers burying in morn and returned at 2 in eve. I hoed strawberries (new ones) in morn.

Tue. 13th. Cloudy and windy from S all day and sprinkled rain at 2 in eve and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 11 to 12 at night and we had a good rain. Dud and Sidney broke ground today and Willie cleaned up ground. I hoed mustard and lettuce and radishes and Irish potatoes in old garden in morn.

Wed. 14th. Bright and cool from NE and no rain. Dud and Sidney broke ground today and Willie cleaned up ground. I cut pea sticks on roadside and packed them to new garden in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water and fed in eve.

Thu. 15th. Warm and cloudy and dropped rain a little in eve. Dud and Sidney broke ground today and Willie cleaned up ground in morn and Willie and I shucked and shelled more thab 1/2 bbl of seed corn in eve. I packed sticks and stuck peas in new garden in morn.

Fri. 16th. Warm and cloudy and windy from SW and sprinkled rain some in eve and at night. Dud and Sidney broke ground today. Willie and I cut sticks and finished sticking peas in new garden in morn and we shelled some seed corn in eve.

Sat. 17th. Bright and cool from N. Dud and Sidney broke ground in morn. Willie rode Daisie to hunt cattle in morn and drove her to town in eve and carried Elma - she taught school in morn. I hoed and thinned peas in new garden in morn.

Sun. 18th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from N. Katie James and Hazel Baldwin dined here and went to SS in eve with Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion and Bro Ellis preached there.

Mon. 19th. Cloudy and dropped rain some in morn and eve too and cool. Willie and Dud and Sidney planted corn (our first) all day. I stuck peas in new garden with canes in morn.

Tue. 20th. Cloudy some but bright and warmer today. Willie and Dud and Sidney planted corn today. I stuck peas in new garden with canes.

Wed. 21st. Bright but cloudy some and warm from SW. Willie and Dud and Sidney planted corn today. I hoed the onions in new garden in morn and shucked and shelled some seed corn in eve.

Thu. 22nd. Cloudy but bright and warm from SW and dropped rain a little in eve. Willie and Dud and Sidney planted corn in morn and finished first planting and they planted some yams in patch E of here in eve. I hoed Irish potatoes and beets and lettuce and radishes and mustard and some of strawberries in old garden in morn.

Fri. 23rd. Cloudy and warm and high SW wind till late in eve and a thunder cloud came up from N at midnight and we had a hard rain and some wind but didn't last long. Dud and Sidney broke ground today. Willie hunted and saw all of cattle in morn and he and I shucked and shelled some bread corn in eve. I hoed and finished new strawberries in old garden in morn.

Sat. 24th. Bright and cool from N. Dud and Sidney broke ground in morn and Dud drove wagon to town in eve and carried one bbl of corn to mill and Willie and Minnie drove Daisie to town too. I set out gaps in new strawberries in old garden in morn.

Sun. 25th. Bright and cool in morn but warm and cloudy from SW in eve. Charles and Carl and I walked to Wiley's and back in morn. All but Nellie and Carl and me went to SS in eve.

Mon. 26th. Warm and cloudy from SW and windy and rained in little showers most of morn and bright in eve and windy from SW and a thunder cloud came up from N at midnight and we had a hard quick shower. Dud and Sidney broke ground today and Willie cleaned up ground. I picked grass out of old strawberries in old garden in morn.

Tue. 27th. Bright, nearly clear, and very cool from N. Dud and Sidney broke ground today and Willie cleaned up ground. I planted some cucumbers and squashes in new garden in morn and brought a s'k of pinestraw from field in morn.

Wed. 28th. Clear and a little frost in morn but calm and pleasant. Dud and Sidney broke ground and Willie cleaned up ground. I planted tomatoes and okra and bush beans in new garden in morn.

Thu. 29th. Clear and a little frost in morn but a pleasant day. Dud and Sidney broke ground and Willie cleaned off ground. I planted butter and pole beans in new garden and hoed part of peas there in morn.

Fri. 30th. Bright and pleasant from SW. Dud and Sidney broke ground and Willie walked and hunted cattle in morn and planted some watermelons in eve. I hoed last of peas and onions in new garden in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water and fed in eve.

Sat. 31st. Cloudy some and windy from SW all day. Dud and Sidney broke ground in morn and Willie rode Daisie to see cattle and Willie drove Daisie to town in eve and carried Elma. She taught school in morn and finished session. Wiley and family and Jack D and Katie James all dined here - my birthday dinner.
