MARCH 1913

Sat. Mar. 1st. Bright and a cold wind from N all day but pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. Willie and Ben broke ground in Sims' corner in morn and Willie and Marion drove Sandy to town in eve. I worked most of day putting 5 wires around old Apple-Pear-tree and finished it by 4 1/4 in eve.

Sun. 2nd. Clear and a pretty hard freeze in morn but pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. Willie and Nellie and Carmel and Marion walked to SS in eve and Bro Hopper preached there and went back to town. Rena here in eve.

Mon. 3rd. Bright but cloudy some all day and a slight freeze in morn but wind from SE and pleasant in eve. Willie and Ben broke ground all day with both double teams. I cut up good deal of wood early in morn and hoed onions and lettuce and radishes and peas in garden in morn and shucked corn and shelled some seed corn in eve.

Tue. 4th. Bright but cloudy some all day and pleasant. Willie and Ben broke ground all day with both double teams. I hoed middles in strawberries and winter onions in garden in morn and shucked corn and shelled some seed corn in eve.

Wed. 5th. Bright and pleasant. Willie and Ben broke ground all day. I hoed middles in strawberries and onions in garden in morn after getting wood for Leah to wash and I shucked corn and shelled some seed corn and made a box out of part of old cart body in eve.

Thu. 6th. Bright and a very cool wind from E of N all day but pleasant in sun. Willie and Ben broke ground all day. I hoed middles in strawberries and onions in morn and shucked corn and shelled some seed corn in eve.

Fri. 7th. Cloudy all day and nearly cold enough to freeze early in morn and a chilly wind from NE all day but warmer late in eve. Willie and Ben broke ground all day. I hilled strawberries in morn and shucked corn and shelled some seed corn in eve.

Sat. 8th. Cloudy and chilly from E early in morn but bright and pleasant till 3 in eve and dark cloudy late in eve from SE and rained a little early in night. Ben broke ground with the mules in morn. Willie found some of his hogs up the creek and shut them in pasture in morn and he and Carmel drove Sandy to town in eve. I hilled strawberries in garden in morn and till 3 3/4 in eve and finished them.

Sun. 9th. Cloudy and a damp breeze from SW all morn and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 2 in eve and rained most of eve and some in night in thunder showers and we had a big rain in all - all of us home today.

Mon. 10th. Bright but cloudy some all day and a little cool from N. Willie and Ben and Dick Stewart cleaned up ground all day in back of field. I put up stakes and braces and one wire around the 4 pear trees in hollow of old orchard in morn and shucked corn and shelled some seed corn in eve and got wood and water and fed too.

Tue. 11th. Bright and pleasant all day. Willie and Ben and Dickie S cleaned up ground in morn and Willie in eve and Ben and Dickie broke ground in eve with both double teams. I put up 2 more strands of wire around the 4 pear trees in hollow in orchard by 3 in eve.

Wed. 12th. It began to rain in thunder showers from W or SW at 7 1/2 in morn and lasted all day and we had a big fall of water in all. We did nothing in morn but Willie and Ben cleaned up ground part of eve and rain stopped them at 3 in eve. I made 2 boxes for hens' nests in eve.

Thu. 13th. Cloudy and a damp wind from S and sprinkled rain some early in morn and rained in hard showers at 10 to 12 with some thunder and a pretty high S wind and bright after 2 1/2 in eve. Willie and Ben cleaned up ground in field part of morn and all eve. I put up some wires around pear trees in hollow in orchard part of morn and some in eve.

Fri. 14th. Bright and pleasant and no rain today. Willie and Ben cleaned up ground in field today. I put up wire around the 4 pear trees in hollow in orchard and finished there by 10 in morn and patched up old rail fence from big back gate to garden by 3 1/2 in eve.

Sat. 15th. Bright and a cold wind from W of N all day and night too. Willie and Ben cleaned up ground in morn and Willie rode Sandy and saw cattle in eve. Nellie and Bernice drove Nancy to our buggy to town in morn and returned at 2 1/2 in eve. I patched up old rail fence from garden to big back gate and drove down some locust stakes around a pear tree near cow pen to put a pen around it in morn and replanted some peas in garden in eve.

Sun. 16th. Clear and a slight freeze in morn and a cold wind from N all day. Willie and children went to SS in eve.

Mon. 17th. Clear and a frost and pretty hard freeze in morn but didn't seem to kill vegetation much. Willie and Ben broke ground today with both double teams. I put up a pen around a pear tree near old cow pen with old rails and one wire at top of it by 4 in eve.

Tue. 18th. Clear and not quite cold enough for a frost in morn and pleasant from E after 10 in morn. Willie and Ben and Leah planted corn (our first) today. They finished Gate cut and planted little on hilltop of H ridge. Minnie and I hung up our meat by 9 1/2 in morn and I cut up good deal of wood and drew good deal of water by 12 and I shucked some bread corn and shelled some seed corn in eve.

Wed. 19th. Bright, but cloudy some all day, and pleasant from SE. Willie and Ben and Leah planted corn all day. I hoed onions and lettuce and radishes and mustard in garden and planted some tomatoes there too in morn and shucked some bread corn and shelled some seed corn in eve.

Thu. 20th. Warm and cloudy all morn from SW, and sprinkled rain several times early in eve and we had a hard little shower with some thunder at 4 and quit. Willie and Ben and Leah planted corn all day and didn't quit for the rain, but got wet some. I hoed peas and Irish potatoes in garden in morn and shucked and shelled some bread corn in eve and found a small Dom hen setting on 14 eggs and set them under a reddish brown.

Fri. 21st. We had a good rain at 4 in morn with some thunder from NW and bright and cool from N all day. Willie and Ben broke ground with both double teams today. I got wood for Leah to wash early in morn and shelled and winnowed some bread corn by 11 1/2. I got a sack of pinestraw and set a hen in eve.

Sat. 22nd. Bright and very cool from E early in morn and pleasant from SE after 10 in morn. Willie and Ben broke ground in morn and Willie rode Sandy to see cattle in eve. Wiley and Rena and Nellie and John drove Nancy to our buggy to town in morn. Dago drove Wiley's team to wagon and carried a load of earcorn to town in morn and carried 7 pks of bread corn for us and got it ground. I hoed winter onions in NW corner of garden in morn and found 3 hens' nests in eve.

Sun. 23rd. Bright, but cloudy some all day, and windy from S and pleasant. I walked to Wiley's and back in morn. Willie and Nellie and Carmel and Marion walked to SS in eve and Griffin preached there.

Mon. 24th. Warm and cloudy some all day, and windy from S and sprinkled rain some in morn, and some in eve too but not enough to bother work. Willie and Ben broke ground in field in morn and Ben broke up some ground in patch E of here in eve and he and Willie planted yams there and Willie ran cultivator on planted cane there too and they broke up bean patch there in hollow late in eve. I hoed strawberries in garden in morn and shucked corn and shelled some seed corn and picked yam seed out of rotten ones in eve.

Tue. 25th. Warm and cloudy and windy from S all day. Willie and Ben and Leah planted corn all day. I finished hoeing strawberries and planted some bush beans in garden in morn and shucked some corn and shelled some seed corn in eve. Minnie and I put away our meat in 3 bbls too.

Wed. 26th. Warm and cloudy and windy from S all morn and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 1 1/2 in eve and rained a good rain here, but not a washing one, at 1 1/2 to 4, with some thunder and bright and very cool from NW, late in eve. Willie and Ben and Leah planted corn all day and didn't quite finish all of ground broken. I cut sticks and stuck peas in garden in morn. We did nothing but get wood and feed in eve.

Thu. 27th. Bright, and a cold wind from W of N all day, but pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. Willie and Ben broke ground all day. I cut and packed and stuck peas in garden most of day.

Fri. 28th. A slight freeze and some frost in morn - but didn't seem to kill vegetation - and cloudy all day from S and warmer in eve. Willie and Ben broke ground today. I finished sticking peas and hoed them and part of onions by 11 1/2 in morn.

Sat. 29th. Cloudy and very cool early in morn, but calm and warmer in eve. Willie and Ben broke ground in morn and Willie and Marion drove Sandy to town in eve. I hoed around the fig trees in garden and hoed the winter onions in NW corner of garden by 10 in morn and made 2 boxes for hens nests by 12.

Sun. 30th. Bright, but some clouds all day, and pleasant. Wiley went to his Pa's in morn and Rena and her children here to dinner and she brought a birthday cake to me. Nellie and Marion and Buddy walked to D Chambers in morn and returned late in eve. Willie and children went to SS in eve.

Mon. 31st. Cloudy and misted rain a little early in morn but bright and calm and pleasant after 10 in morn. Willie rode Sandy to see cattle early in morn and fixed up watergap and slipgap near old cow pen and shut hogs out of calf pasture by 12 and he and Ben broke ground in eve. Ben broke ground in morn. I scraped Irish potatoes in new ground E of henshed in morn and I planted 2 arbors of white pole beans in hollow E of here in eve.
