MARCH 1902

Sat. Mar. 1st. Bright but cloudy some all day and pleasant from W. Willie and Henry broke ground in home field all morn and didn't work in eve. Willie rode Dan to Cohen's in eve. I worked all morn in garden and Nellie helped me and we planted onions and peas and radishes and beets and lettuce and some Irish potatoes (1 pk of early Rose) and finished all by 11 3/4. I put up 2 steps for a horse block at front gate in eve, and measured up 10 gallons of molasses for Kate Dean and put in a keg.

Sun. 2nd. Bright, nearly clear, and cool and dry from W of N. Lewis and West and Chunk here awhile in morn and Buddy and B C and Dixie and her 2 little children here most of day and Rena and Bernice too. Wiley went to his Pa's in morn. Willie and Minnie drove Joe to Union Church in eve and heard Dr. Hunnicutt preach and returned just after sunset.

Mon. 3rd. Clear and quite cool early in morn but wind from SW and warmer in eve. Willie cleaned up ground in morn and broke ground with Joe in eve. Henry broke ground all day with Dan and mule. Nellie and I drove Joe to town in morn and I got some flower plants at Depot and I paid Metzger $4.75 for 50 lbs of lard but I brought only 10 home and we got some other things at M and C's and returned at 12 3/4. I walked to Wiley's at 1 1/2 and dug up some Crepe Myrtle bushes in yard (9 in all) in eve. Gussie came at dark and here all night.

Tue. 4th. Dark cloudy and a damp breeze from SW and began to rain slowly at 11 1/2 in morn and wind changed to NW at 12 1/2 and dropped and sprinkled rain till 4 in eve and quit and a cool W of N wind all night. Willie and Henry broke ground till 12 and didn't work in eve. I began to work on wire fence on water gap early in morn, putting some new bay rails at bottom, and Buddy and John came at 9 and got 500 stalks of cane and I raked dirt off balance of rick by 11 3/4 for them to get 500 more in eve, but rain prevented. I shelled some seed corn at 11 1/4 to 12. I was feverish last night and today with cold.

Wed. 5th. Bright, and sun shined all day after 9 in morn, but a cold wind from W of N all day till late in eve. Willie and Henry broke ground most of day in SW corner. I shelled 1 pk of corn early in morn and ground into meal. Buddy hauled in loads of cane (about 900 stalks) today, one in morn and the other just after dinner and paid Willie 5 dollars for the 1400 stalks. George Washington came in morn and got 15 gallons of molasses. I worked on fence by cow pen in eve. I was feverish with cold late in eve and at night.

Thu. 6th. Bright, and a white frost and freeze in morn but wind from SE and warmer in eve. Henry broke ground all day in home field with Dan and mule. Willie and I helped Wiley to get his blue sow and 4 pigs from here to his lot early in morn. We put ours in calf pasture and B C got sow pig at 9 1/2 in morn. Willie and I planted cane most of day in N part of orchard with Joe. I had a dull headache all day but it left me late in eve.

Fri. 7th. Cloudy and very little sun all day, and a damp wind from S and sprinkled rain some in eve. Henry broke ground all day in home field. Willie and I finished planting cane in orchard by 10 1/2 in morn and I threshed some cotton stalks in hollow and on hillside in orchard by 11 1/2 and Willie broke it up at 1 to 2 in eve and Willie plowed in field balance of eve and I cut 1/2 bu Irish potatoes at 1 to 2 in eve and planted part of them in hollow and on hillside in orchard at 2 to 4 1/2.

Sat. 8th. Bright, and calm, and warm and sun shined all day. Willie and Henry broke ground in home field in morn and Willie drove mule to town in eve. I planted Irish potatoes in hollow in orchard early in morn and finished them at 10 and I repaired wire fence on W side of cow pen till 11 3/4 and part of eve too.

Sun. 9th. Warm and cloudy all day, and no sun in morn but bright in eve and wind from S. Nellie and I walked to Wiley's early in morn and carried Carmell and Wiley and Rena and Bernice came back with us at 10 and here till late in eve and Buddy and little Bud and Dickie C here too most of day.

Mon. 10th. Bright, but some dark clouds all day, and warm, and a damp S breeze. Willie and Henry broke ground most of day in home field and finished all of corn ground in it by late in eve. I worked on cow pen fence - on W and N sides of it most of day, putting in new posts and tightening wire, and putting new short stakes and rails at bottom.

Tue. 11th. Bright, but cloudy some all day, and warm, with a damp wind from S and high part of day, and some at night. Willie cleaned up ground in Luckett field in morn and Henry broke ground there on hilltop all day with Dan and mule. Willie rode Joe to Cohen's in eve. I worked on cow pen wire fence on E and N sides till 10 in morn and finished it and I walked to Wiley's and back at 10 1/4 to 11. John Ogden came to Wiley's in morn and got some sugarcane and we looked for him to stop here and get some molasses but he didn't. I packed and cut up some wood and I packed some ashes in garden in eve. Bernice here after 11 in morn.

Wed. 12th. A thunder cloud came up from W at 3 in morn and we had a hard rain at 3 1/4 to 4 and needed too and bright and pleasant all day from S of W. I fixed wire gap early in morn and Willie and Wiley and Henry and I moved wire fence of cow pasture from on bank to sand bar near creek, most of day, but didn't quite finish it. I hauled the old posts in eve with Joe and cart. Nellie at Wiley's all day.

Thu. 13th. Bright and cool from NE till 4 in eve and cloudy late in eve and at night, and began to rain at 1 in night, with some thunder and wind from E and lasted balance of night. Henry broke ground in Luckett field all day with Dan and mule - he plowed beyond branch after 9 in morn. Willie and I cleaned up ground there ahead of plowing and we cut 60 locusts there on branch for a wire fence to divide orchard. Willie sold the black Ray sow to Madison Turner early in morn for 2 1/2 dollars. Minnie and Carmell at Wiley's all day. I packed some bay rails from near water gap up the gulley to fix calf pasture fence at 3 to 5 in eve.

Fri. 14th. Dark cloudy and no sun, and rained in slow showers all morn and misted most of eve, and wind from SE, and cool. Willie didn't work today on account of wet. Willie and Minnie walked to Wiley's early in morn and Minnie and Carmell there all day. Willie rode Joe in fields to hunt cows in eve and Wiley went too and we put Wiley's Guernsey cow and Strawberry and Rosa and Cherry into cow pasture to calve, late in eve. I put up 2 boxes and set 2 hens, under wagon shed and got some wood in eve.

Sat. 15th. Cloudy and foggy early in morn and bright and warm after 11, and thundered and rained around some in early part of night but only sprinkled here. Willie and Wiley and Henry repaired wire fence (cowpasture) on creek in morn. Nellie and Bernice and I drove Joe to Tigner Newman's today. We started at 9 1/2 in morn and got to Tigner's at 2 in eve. Mary is sick in bed and has been since in Fall.

Sun. 16th. Bright and cool from N and a pleasant day. Nellie, Bernice and I left Tigner Newman's at 9 1/4 in morn and got home at 2. Wiley and Rena and Tigner D here most of day and Buddy and Lewis and Seymour too in eve.

Mon. 17th. Clear and cool with a dry wind from N. Willie cleaned up ground in Luckett field and Henry broke ground there all day with Dan and mule. I repaired calf pasture fence, from gulley on NW side to H ridge, in morn and I put up 2 pannels of old pickets around the yellow rose bush on N side of flower yard in eve.

Tue. 18th. Bright, very cool all day and I think cold enough for a frost in morn, but too dry and a breeze from NE all day and cloudy some late in eve and at night. Willie and Henry and I planted corn (our first) all day. We planted 1/2 bu yellow boatcorn in Gate cut and part of that cut in our native corn and we planted H ridge and part of old Cane hollow. Henry opened ground once to row with Ella and I drilled corn and Willie covered with Dan to harrow.

Wed. 19th. Cloudy and chilly early in morn from E but bright and warmer some from SE after 10 in morn. Willie and Henry and I planted most of day, as on yesterday, in old Cane hollow and Cherry cut and water hole cut.

Thu. 20th. Cloudy some all day but bright and a damp and cool wind from SE all day and began to rain slowly at 9 at night and we had a hard rain with thunder at 12 1/2 to 1 1/2 in night. Willie and Henry and I planted corn all day, as on yesterday, in 2nd and 3rd Cane hollow and in Pine corner. Nellie at Wiley's all day and Bernice came back with her and staid all night.

Fri. 21st. Cloudy and misted rain till 9 in morn but bright, and nearly clear, after 10 in morn from S of W and pleasant. We had just enough rain last night. Willie cleaned up ground and Henry listed ground in Luckett field most of day. Wiley drove Goulden and Jack to wagon to town at 9 in morn to 2 in eve and dined here and Rena and Bernice here most of day. I rode Joe to Cohen's at 9 to 11 3/4 in morn and I hauled 2 cart loads of locust posts from branch in Luckett field with Joe in eve. Willie James came late in eve and staid at Lewis' at night.

Sat. 22nd. Cloudy some all day, but bright and sun shined most of day and cool early in morn and pleasant after 10 in morn and cloudy at night and thundered far off in S late in night. Willie cleaned up ground in Luckett field all morn and Henry listed ground there. Willie and Minnie and Carmell drove Joe to Mrs. James' in eve. I hauled 3 cart loads of locust posts from branch in Luckett field by 10 1/2 in morn and put in orchard for a wire fence. I hauled 2 loads on yesterday eve making 60 posts in all and I packed some wood from NW of orchard by 12 and I hoed onions and peas in garden in eve. Rena and Bernice staid here at night.

Sun. 23rd. Cloudy and cool a little and wind from E and rained in little sprinkles all through the day and some at night. I drove up Reddy or Strawberry from cow pasture near creek with a 3/8 Guernsey heifer calf early in morn. Rena and Bernice here till late in eve. Wiley went to his Pa's in morn. Willie and Minnie and Carmell returned from Mrs. James' at dusk.

Mon. 24th. Foggy and wet early in morn and bright and warm in eve but cloudy. Henry broke ground in Luckett field most of day with Dan and mule. Willie and I drove up young Cherry with a red 3/4 Guernsey calf from Wiley's field early in morn and we cut and rolled logs in new ground at back of our field most of day. Buddy here late in eve and told us about engaging his and our peas to Cropper (Ernest) at $1.35 per bushel (by measure).

Tue. 25th. Warm and cloudy from SE all day and a damp wind and very little sunshine. Henry broke ground all day in Luckett field. Willie and I marked our 8 pigs early in morn and we rolled and burned logs most of day in new ground at back of our field.

Wed. 26th. Warm and cloudy from S and no sunshine all day and began to rain in little sprinkles at 11 in morn and lasted most of eve and some in night. Henry broke ground in Luckett field all morn and till 3 in eve and Willie burned logs there in new ground at back of our field. I helped Wiley to plant corn in morn and till 3 1/4 in eve and rain stopped us then. Wiley opened ground with Goulden and I drilled corn and covered some with Jack mule to harrow and Wiley part of time.

Thu. 27th. Cloudy all day and no sun and warm and a damp S breeze and misted rain in morn till 9 and again late in eve and all night. I put the same handle in our shovel which I broke out a day or two ago early in morn and Henry and I winnowed peas at woodpile at 9 to 11 3/4 and Buddy came at 8 3/4 and Willie walked back with him at 9 1/2 to 12 1/4 and got 17 sks and we sacked 30 bushels of peas - 2 bu to sack at 1 to 3 and Willie and Henry hauled 3 loads of wood from back of our field with Dan and mule to wagon late in eve. I carried a gray hen and 14 chicks to Bernice late in eve.

Fri. 28th. Cloudy and warm and wet most of day and rained in little showers from SW at 9 1/2 till 2 and quit and a shower came up from NW at 5 and it turned cooler at night. Willie and Henry and I hauled 3 wagon loads of pine wood from back of our field by 9 1/4 in morn with Dan and mule and Willie rode Dan to Clara's at 9 1/2 to 12 1/4 and got hole digger and Henry and I laid off wire fence from near barn to NE corner of orchard by 11 1/2. We didn't work in eve on account of rain. Willie and I got our Guernsey cow and heifer yearling out of field and Wiley's little Guernsey bull too and put them in cow pasture late in eve.

Sat. 29th. Clear and pleasant from W and sun shined good deal today. Henry drove Dan and mule to wagon and carried 30 bu of peas (in 2 bu sks) to town in morn and Willie rode Joe and Wiley Goulden and went there and Willie sold the peas to Ernest Cropper at $1.35 per bu. and got some things in town. Henry returned at ___ in eve and Willie late in eve. I put up bars and set some wire posts on line of wire fence in NE part of orchard, after getting wood and water for Aunt Margaret to wash in morn, till 12 and some in eve too. Nellie and Minnie cooked some cakes in eve for tomorrow.

Sun. 30th. Clear and cool from W of N all day and dried good deal today. Wiley and Rena and Bernice and Gordon and Effie here most of day and we had a little birthday dinner (mine). Nellie and Minnie and Carmell and Rena and Bernice and Effie walked to Lewis' in eve.

Mon. 31st. Bright and sun shined most of day and a very cool wind from W of N all day. _____ _______ mule and Goulden to town in morn and carried _____ and he and Rena and Bernice dined here. Willie drove ______ a red 3/4 Guernsey bull calf early in morn. ______logs and brush in new ground at back of our field. _______and we drove some of our cattle out of field ____ late in eve. Henry broke ground with _____ in Luckett field _____.
