JUNE 1895

Sat. June 1st. Bright and warm and no rain. William Neyland stayed here last night and left early in morn. Willie and I plowed cotton in Cane hollow till 10 in morn and finished that cut (1st plowing). Pa hoed in whip peas in poor E side of Gate cut till 10 in morn. Willie rode Joe to town in eve and got a grey suit on credit from Schaeffer. I drove Hattie to new buggy to Cohen's in eve.

Sun. 2nd. Bright and warm till 4 in eve and a thunder cloud came up from SE at 4 1/2 and we had a good little shower then and we had a soaking one from that way at 6 1/2 to 8 at night. Willie rode Joe and Beau C drove his horse to Dixie's buggy and carried her and W.D. carried Rena in Gussie's buggy to Bethel in morn and all returned at 8 1/4 (wet). Mrs. Baker here all day and at night. I rode Hattie to Clara's in eve at 1 1/2 to 4 1/2.

Mon. 3rd. Warm and bright all morn and showered from SE at 1 to 2 1/2 and some late in eve (too wet to work in field). Willie and I marked our pigs (14 in number). Two got out of pen unmarked early in morn and we put some brush on fence at water gap and worked little on big road opposite here by 10 in morn. Pa cut weeds in yard most of day and I cut some late in eve at 4 to 5 1/2.

Tue. 4th. Bright and very warm all day till late in eve and clouded up and rained a hard shower at 6 to 7. Willie and I hoed corn in 2nd Cane hollow in burnt places till 10 1/4 in morn and Pa cut weeds in yard. Mrs. Cook and Jim Fugler here at 10 1/2 to 11 1/2. Willie and I plowed most of eve in Persimmon cut (whip peas and potatoes) but ground was too wet. Dug Walker came late in eve to see Willie's yearlings and left here about sunset in rain.

Wed. 5th. Cloudy and wind cool from N all morn and bright and pleasant in eve and no rain today. Pa and Willie hoed little patch of corn (planted with hoes) in new SW corner in marsh in morn and Pa hoed in sugar cane in orchard in eve. I set out potatoe sets in gaps in our planted patch in Persimmon cut all day (taking all of sets from hills but 1). I used up all of sets and went over more than 1/2 of patch by late in eve (they are not 1/2 a stand).

Thu. 6th. Bright and pleasant and no rain. Willie and I plowed whip peas all morn and finished all in Persimmon cut in SE corner and plowed some in old pea ground on poor NE part of Cherry cut. Willie harrowed cotton middles all eve on H ridge with Joe and I plowed cotton there on hilltop with Hattie all eve. Pa hoed in sugar cane most of day and finished it in eve.

Fri. 7th. Bright and warm all morn but some clouds from S and we had a heavy shower from S at 12 1/2 to 3 and another little one at 6 1/2. Pa and I walked to Sims' early in morn and appraised the stray heifer for him. Willie finished harrowing cotton middles on H ridge in 1 hour early in morn and he and I plowed cotton there balance of morn. Pa hilled cotton in Cherry cut and we did nothing in eve on account of wet.

Sat. 8th. Warm, wet and cloudy and sprinkled rain at 9 to 10 and a cloud blew up from S at 12 3/4 and rained slowly most of eve and part of night. I drove Hattie to old buggy to Cohen's in morn and returned at 11 1/2. Wiley and Leroy D and Dan and Gordon and Tigner and John and Dickie C and Scott N came here at 1 1/2 from cutting bee trees and dined here and Bud here at night till after supper and all left but Scott -he stayed all night.

Sun. 9th. Cloudy and warm and began to rain from S at 11 1/2 and lasted till late in eve - a slow rain. Pa walked to Clara's in morn and there all day. Scott N here last night and today and Dan here all day and they left in eve. W.D. and Joe Miller here to supper. I rode Hattie to Lewis' in morn and carried a letter and some papers.

Mon. 10th. Cloudy all day but pleasant and sun shined very little and no rain but ground is too wet to work although Pa and Willie hoed corn in 2nd Cane hollow in morn and hoed cotton in Water hole cut in eve. I set out potatoesets and vines in gaps in our planted potatoe patch in Persimmon cut all day. Those set in eve I got from Lewis' patch by Gate cut. I killed a sow opossum in branch just above spring just after breakfast in morn.

Tue. 11th. Bright and pleasant and no rain. I finished setting out gaps in our potatoe patch in Persimmon cut by 9 1/4 in morn and scraped potatoes (both sides of rows) there balance of day. Pa and Willie hilled cotton on W side of Cherry cut all day. I had a pain in left side of my head all day and at night and slept but little.

Wed. 12th. Bright and warmer but no rain. Pa and Willie hilled cotton in Cherry cut all day. I arose with pain in right side of my head and vomited twice at 10 to 11 but I scraped potatoes in Persimmon cut till 11 in morn and finished and I lay down from 11 to 1 and drank cup coffee then and I plowed cotton on SE circle of H ridge at 2 to 5 1/2 in eve but was too sick to be working. Nellie and Helen drove Gussie's mare to Dixie's buggy to Ed Ogden's in morn and returned at dusk.

Thu. 13th. Bright and warm and thundered far off all eve. Pa and Willie hilled cotton all day in Cherry cut. I plowed cotton in morn on SE circle of H ridge and finished there at 9 1/2 and rebedded 8 rows on NE corner of Persimmon cut (for slips) by 10 and quit and laid down till 12 and my headache left me in eve. I vomited once early in morn with it and slept but little last night with it. I plowed whip peas in old pea ground on NE part of Cherry cut in eve and finished that cut (Hattie all day).

Fri. 14th. Bright and warm all day till late in eve and clouded up then and threatened rain but didn't rain till 2 at night and we had a little shower then. Pa and Willie hilled cotton all day. They finished Cherry cut and hilled little in Cane hollow in eve. I plowed whip peas on poor E end of Gate cut and finished there at 9 in morn and plowed out our planted potatoes on NE corner of Persimmon cut by 4 in eve and plowed little cotton in orchard late in eve (Hattie all day).

Sat. 15th. Cloudy and began to rain slowly from SW at 7 1/2 in morn and lasted till 8 3/4 and quit till 12 and began then again and lasted most of eve - a slow rain. Willie rode Joe to town to a barbecue with Bud at 9 1/2 in morn and returned at dark. I plowed cotton in orchard till 8 in morn and got nearly wet and quit. I drove Hattie to Cohen's to new buggy in eve and it rained on me slowly all way there and quit at 5. I returned at 6 3/4.

Sun. 16th. Cloudy and damp till 9 and bright and warm from S balance of day and no rain but thundered far off most of day and lightninged in N at night. Beau C drove his horse to Dixie's buggy and carried her and W.D. carried Rena in Gussie's buggy to Chapel to preaching in morn and returned at 2 3/4. Pa at Clara's most of day. I rode Hattie around in field early in morn and on to Sims' and got some papers. Mrs. Baker here all day and at night. Willie and I repaired wire fence N of cow pen late in eve where a large green beech limb had fallen on it just at daylight this morn.

Mon. 17th. Warm and cloudy most of morn and thundered and showered around at 9 1/2 to 12 and we had a thundershower then from NW and another at 1 to 2 and rained slowly till 3 and quit. I plowed cotton all morn (and cane) in N part of orchard and Pa and Willie hilled cotton in old Cane hollow all morn. We did nothing but get some wood and I set out 2 rows of slips on NE corner of Persimmon cut late in eve. Dixie drove Jimmy Primm's mare to her buggy to Primm's at 10 to 11 in morn and brought Mrs. Morris here late in eve to stay awhile.

Tue. 18th. Bright and warm till 3 1/2 in eve and began to rain from W at 4 and lasted till 6 - a very heavy fall of water. Pa and Willie hilled cotton in Cane hollow all morn and till rain in eve but ground was very wet in morn. I set out 6 rows of slips on NE corner of Persimmon cut by 10 in morn and finished that patch and I cut some oats by 10 1/2 and I plowed cane and cotton in orchard on N side at 2 to 4 in eve. Clara and her little boy here in eve and Willie took them home on Hattie late in eve after rain.

Wed. 19th. Bright and warm all morn and began to rain in shower from NW (or W) at 1 and lasted till 6 in eve - a big fall of water in all. Pa and Willie hoed cotton in Cane hollow in morn and I hoed on H ridge but the ground was very wet. We did nothing but get wood in eve on account of rain. W.D. came late in eve and stayed till bedtime.

Thu. 20th. Bright and warm all day and thundershowers passed around some in eve and we had a little shower at sunset. Pa and Willie hoed cotton most of day in Cane hollow. I hoed little patch of cotton beyond old cow pen corner and chopped weeds and some grass out of some cotton on N side of orchard by 10 1/2 and I plowed out that corner of cotton in eve. Mr. Mabry Morris here at 7 1/2 to 9 1/4 at night.

Fri. 21st. Bright, warm and wet in morn and clouded up from W at 3 in eve and we had a heavy rain at 3 to 4 1/2 with little wind and thunder. Pa and Willie hoed cotton in Cane hollow in morn. I chopped weeds and grass out of cotton on W side of orchard and plowed som cotton there in morn. We did nothing on account of rain in eve. I fixed water gap and hoed around some apple trees on W side of orchard and got wood and cut some oats late in eve (Willie helped me).

Sat. 22nd. Bright and warm all day and didn't rain here but thundered and showered NW of here not very far off late in eve. I drove Hattie to old buggy in morn to Cohen's and got 50 lbs. sugar and 2 bu. meal and 1 pr. shoes and 2 of socks for myself on credit and 1 bottle of cordial for Pa - he is sick today. I returned at 11. Dan and Gussie and wife here in eve. I packed and cut up wood in eve and cut some oats. Willie rode Joe to baseball at Mr. D Chambers in morn and returned after dark.

Sun. 23rd. Bright and warm and no rain but thundered far off most of eve. Nellie and Gussie drove his mare to new buggy and Willie rode Joe (and Bud went) to Donegal Church in morn and there till

just before sunset. Helen and baby here all day and Cousin Mary and Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Mag McGraw and Lucy and William and wife here in eve and W.D. here to supper. Edmund Collins here most of day. Pa rode Hattie to Clara's in eve.

Mon. 24th. Bright and very warm and no rain but thundered far off in eve. Pa and Willie hoed cotton in Cane hollow most of day. I finished plowing cotton and cane on W side of orchard by 11 in morn and I began and plowed cotton all eve (2nd plowing with 4 furrows) on hilltop of Cherry cut (Pa's and Willie's cotton). Mrs. Morris still here since last Monday and Mr. Morris here at 6 1/2 till 9 in eve.

Tue. 25th. Bright and very warm and sprinkled rain at 4 1/4 in eve. Pa and Willie hoed cotton in morn in Cane hollow and Pa hoed on H ridge in eve and Willie cut oats in Gate cut with Lewis' scythe all eve. I replowed our potatoepatch in Persimmon cut with 4 furrows in morn and I plowed cotton all eve in Cherry cut with 4 furrows (2nd time). Mrs. Kate Price and Mrs. Kate Ogden here all day and Mr. Morris here at 6 1/2 to 8 3/4 in eve.

Wed. 26th. Cloudy most of day and a thundershower came up from NW at 11 1/2 to 12 and rained little here but most of it passed around E from N. Pa hoed in cotton all day - in Cane hollow in morn and on H ridge in eve. Willie finished cutting oats in Gate cut by 8 in morn and Willie and I hauled in all of oats in eve. Mr. Morris and William McGraw carried Mrs. Morris to Hill Place in eve with Johnny to Dixie's buggy.

Thu. 27th. Bright and warm from NE and no rain. Pa hoed in cotton till 8 1/2 in morn and all eve. He walked to Alice's at 9 to 12 in morn. Willie and I hauled out cow manure most of day (17 loads) and put on oat ground in Gate cut in little piles.

Fri. 28th. Bright and very warm till 4 and thundershowers passed around at 3 to 5 1/2 and rained enough to run off house here at 4 1/2 to 5 1/2. Pa and Willie hoed in cotton till 4 3/4 in eve - in Cane hollow in morn and on H ridge in eve. I plowed up oat ground in Gate cut most of day in rows and planted all that I plowed in yellow boat corn (in water furrows in hills and covered with hoe). Ed Ogden here at 4 3/4 to 6 3/4 in eve.

Sat. 29th. Bright and warm most of day and rained around in thundershowers late in eve but none here. I finished plowing up oat ground in Gate cut and planted last of it in yellow boat corn by 10 in morn (in water furrow ). Pa and Willie hoed cotton on H ridge till 10 in morn. I drove Hattie to cart to Cohen's in eve and got a bbl. of flour and some other things on credit and got 50 lbs. more sugar and paid for it and also for the 50 I got on last Saturday ($4.50 for the 100).

Sun. 30th. Bright till 11 1/2 in morn and a thunder cloud came up from SW at 12 but only sprinkled here then and several times in eve. Mrs. Baker and Bud and W.D. here most of day and Dan and Lewis and Beau C came in eve and W.D. and B.C. stayed till 9 1/2 at night and Mrs. Baker stayed all night.
