JULY 1914

Wed. Jul. 1st. Bright and dry and very warm and no rain but thundered around some in eve. Willie put up canvas in Nellie's room in morn and Minnie and Bernice put up paper there and finished it in eve. Dud hoed burrs in corn. I hoed and picked grass out of strawberries in garden in morn and shelled some bread corn in eve.

Thu. 2nd. Bright and very warm and dry and thundered around in eve some but no rain here. Dud hoed burrs in corn and Willie too part of day. I got wood and water for Leah to wash early in morn and hoed and picked grass out of strawberries till 10 in morn and shelled some bread corn in eve.

Fri. 3rd. Bright and very warm till 3 in eve and rained around in thunder showers balance of eve but only sprinkled here. Dud hoed burrs in corn today and Willie hoed in potatoes on H ridge. I hoed in garden in morn till 9 and finished there and shelled some bread corn till 11 1/2 and winnowed it in eve.

Sat. 4th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain here but rained around in thunder showers some in eve. Dud didn't work today. Willie drove Sandy to town in morn and returned at 10 in morn with 6 p'ks of meal and he rode Maud Est to Cooper Wilson's in eve and she took the horse. I brought in some tomatoes and seed cucumbers from field in morn.

Sun. 5th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain here but a thunder cloud passed around E from NE at 4 3/4 to 5 1/4 in eve and near too. I carried a bucket of water to Wiley's in morn and another in eve. Dr. Catchings came out to Wiley's just after dinner to see Bernice. She has had a fever for several days. Willie and Carmel and Marion walked to SS in eve.

Mon. 6th. Bright and warm and dry and rained around a little in eve and only sprinkled a little here. Willie picked grass out of potatoes on H ridge today and Dud cut burrs in corn. I picked some butter beans and okra and some dry pole beans in pumpkin hollow early in morn and brought nearly 2 p'ks of tomatoes from field by 9 1/2 and shucked and shelled some bread corn by 11 1/2 and went to creek with Marion and Buddy and Clarence C in eve.

Tue. 7th. Bright and warm till 2 1/2 in eve and rained around till 3 1/2 and we had a sprinkle. Willie hoed slips in ---- orchard and Dud hoed in corn. I gathered some tomatoes in morn and shucked and shelled some bread corn and I packed some stove wood in eve.

Wed. 8th. Cloudy and sprinkled rain a little early in morn and thundered around some in eve but no rain here. Dud hoed in corn today. Willie finished hoeing in slips in patch N of here in morn. I carried a bucket of water to Wiley's early in morn and Dr. Magruder stopped there to see Bernice and left some medicine for her. I picked and cut up some wood in eve.

Thu. 9th. Cloudy all day and sprinkled rain a little early in morn and bright after 10 in morn. Dud hoed in corn today. Willie not well and hunted cattle today. I picked some pole beans for dinner and got 1/2 bu tomatoes from field in morn and I carried a bucket of water to Wiley's in eve and Bernice was better and seemed to be clear of fever.

Fri. 10th. Bright and dry and no rain here but rained around some in eve. Willie hoed in corn in morn and Dud cut down bushes on big road S of here today. I hoed pepper and some late tomatoes in field in morn and went to creek with Marion and Buddy in eve.

Sat. 11th. Bright and warm and dry till 4 in eve and a thunder cloud came up from SE then and we had a good little shower here. Willie and Marion drove Sandy to town in morn and returned at 10 1/2. Dud cut bushes on roadside in morn and finished it. I hoed in watermelon patch in Sims' bottom in morn and Carmel and I brought home 1/2 bus of tomatoes.

Sun. 12th. Bright and warm till 4 in eve and rained around some till 5 but only sprinkled a little here. Nellie and Charles dined at Wiley's and I carried a few tomatoes and figs there in morn and returned at 11 1/4. Carmel dined at Lanehart's. Willie and Carmel and Marion went to SS in eve.

Mon. 13th. Cloudy and a damp SE breeze all day and we had a good little shower from SE at 3 in eve (enough to make mud). Dud cut bushes and briars in calf pasture today and Willie too in eve. Willie and Marion hunted our cattle on creek in morn. I hoed in watermelon patch in morn and shelled some bread corn in eve.

Tue. 14th. Cloudy till 9 1/2 in morn and bright and very warm till late in eve and rained around some then but none here. Nearly all of men in our neighborhood met on creek in morn on the Charbon question. Dud cut bushes and briars in calf pasture today. Willie and Marion put our dry cattle off creek and in our pasture in eve. I hoed in watermelon patch till 10 in morn and finished and I shelled some bread corn in eve.

Wed. 15th. Cloudy some all day and a thunder cloud NE of here till 10 in morn but only sprinkled here at 7 1/2 to 9 and bright balance of day. Willie cut briars and bushes in calf pasture in morn and Dud cut there all day. Willie and Minnie drove Sandy to town in eve and had a tooth pulled for Minnie. I got some beans and okra in pumpkin hollow in morn and winnowed some bread corn in eve.

Thu. 16th. Bright and warm from W and no rain in sight. Dud cut bushes and briars in calf pasture. Willie ran cultivator and plow in slips in oat patch today. I got wood for Leah to wash early in morn and hoed some in garden and packed and cut up some wood in eve.

Fri. 17th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Dud cut bushes and briars in calf pasture today. Willie ran cultivator and plow on some ground in old orchard for slips today. I put up some hens' nests early in morn and brought some tomatoes from field and I patched some coops and caught 17 young chickens to sell in eve.

Sat. 18th. Bright and warm but some clouds till 9 in morn and a rain cloud came up from E of N and we had a sprinkle at 10 and bright till late in eve and a thunder cloud came up from E of N at 6 in eve and rained till 9 in night - a good rain which wet ground well and very much needed. Willie and B C drove Sandy to our buggy and Dud drove the mules to Lewis' wagon and carried 17 young chickens and 15 p'ks of corn (to mill) and all returned at 12 1/4. I cut up stove wood and hoed up cucumber patch in field (to plant in mustard) by 10 in morn.

Sun. 19th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Bernice here awhile in morn. I helped Wiley to gather some figs in morn. All but Minnie and Carl and me went to SS in eve and Bro Ellis didn't come to preach.

Mon. 20th. Bright, nearly clear, and warm but no rain in sight. Willie and Marion and Dud and I set out and watered slips most of day in oat patch N of here.

Tue. 21st. Bright and dry and warm and no rain in sight but thundered in E and SE in eve. Willie and Dud and Marion planted Irish potatoes in N and NE part of oat patch N of here today and finished late in eve. I gathered some figs for Minnie to preserve early in morn and brought 3 p'ks of tomatoes from field by 10 in morn and they canned them in eve.

Wed. 22nd. Bright and very warm till 12 and a thunder cloud came up from E at 1 in eve and we had a good soaking rain till 2 1/4 and needed too. Willie and I gathered some figs for Minnie to preserve just after breakfast. I planted some mustard in Sims' bottom and brought home some tomatoes by 10. Willie and Marion and Dud set out slips in oat patch in eve.

Thu. 23rd. Cloudy most of day and we and a good shower from E at 1 in eve and another late in eve. Willie and Dud and I marked our calves (4 bulls and 5 heifers) early in morn and Willie and Dud finished putting out slips in oat ground N of here by 9 1/2 and Dud cut briars and bushes in calf pasture till 12. Willie and Marion put our dry cattle out of pasture on creek in eve.

Fri. 24th. Bright and warm in morn and thunder clouds passed around from W most of eve but only sprinkled here most of eve. Dud cut briars and bushes in calf pasture today and finished there. I helped Wiley and Ernest Lee to gather figs early in morn and Willie and I brought some tomatoes from field by 10 1/2.

Sat. 25th. Bright and warm most of day and thunder showers passed around from W at 11 in morn till 4 in eve but only dropped rain here several times. Willie and Carmel drove Sandy to town in morn and returned late in eve. I helped Lewis' boys to gather 4 big buckets of figs early in morn to preserve. Dud cut briars and weeds in hollow W of our house in morn.

Sun. 26th. Bright, nearly clear, and no rain in sight. All home today. Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion went to SS in eve and Bro Ellis preached there.

Mon. 27th. Bright and warm and no rain here but thundered far off in eve. Willie mowed weeds in cow pasture in morn and cut down with hoe in eve. Dud cut there all day too. I and children gathered about 6 p'ks of figs for Miss Cook C and Rubie by 10 in morn and I brought some tomatoes from field by 11 and shelled some pole beans in eve.

Tue. 28th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight today. Willie and Dud cut down briars in cow pasture today. I burned up lice early in morn and rode Sandy in field and brought home 2 watermelons and 1/2 bu of tomatoes which Marion carried on Sandy to Mrs. Lanehart by 11.

Wed. 29th. Cloudy all day and dropped rain several times. Dud cut briars in cow pasture today. Willie was sick and didn't work. Marion and I brought 3 p'ks of tomatoes from Sims' bottom early in morn and Clarence L and Alton S and Babers and Sam came with a Wheelbarrow and carried the tomatoes and 2 buckets of figs to Mrs. L. I saved some tomatoe seeds and shucked corn by 11 1/2.

Thu. 30th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain in sight. Dud cut briars in cow pasture today. Willie and Wiley and Lewis hauled 2 loads of lumber from Elmwood pasture to schoolhouse in morn and Willie repaired big gate on road side in eve and I helped him. I hoed in pindars near the far persimmon tree in morn.

Fri. 31st. Bright and warm and dry and no rain in sight. Willie and Dud hoed and plowed slips in oat patch N of here today. I hoed pindars in morn where I hoed on yesterday.
