JULY 1901

Mon. July 1st. Bright and warm all day and thundered far off most of eve but no rain near here. Willie and Jim hilled cotton in new ground at back of our field today and I hoed all of garden and planted some pepper and cucumbers and muskmelon in morn and I hilled cotton in orchard in eve and finished all there but 7 ends of rows.

Tue. 2nd. Bright and calm and very warm all morn and cloudy and sultry all eve and rained around in thundershowers, near, most of eve from E but only dropped a little here after sunset. Jim hilled cotton in Luckett field today and Willie and I plowed most of day. Willie plowed the mule and I plowed Joe. We plowed some whip peas on poor S side of Gate cut early in morn and we plowed cotton (2nd time) on H ridge most of day. Willie molded and I plowed out middles.

Wed. 3rd. Bright and warm from NE till 1 1/2 in eve and clouded up then and rained around in thundershowers most of eve and we had a little slow one at 3 to 5. Jim hilled cotton in Luckett field in morn and till 3 in eve and Willie and I plowed cotton, with Joe and mule, in old Cane hollow and some on H ridge (we finished H ridge at 7 3/4 in morn). We plowed till 11 in morn and rain ran us home at 3 in eve. I gathered some cucumbers to pickle, in garden, late in eve, and Willie rode Joe around in field.

Thu. 4th. Bright and warm most of day from E. It clouded up and rained around some at 2 to 3 in eve, but only dropped here. Jim didn't work today. He rode Dan to Cohen's early in morn . Willie and I plowed cotton most of day. We finished old Cane hollow and plowed a little in 2nd Cane hollow late in eve. I walked to Wiley's at 1 to 2 and carried a few plums and peaches to Bernice.

Fri. 5th. Bright and warm most of day but it thundered and rained around near most of eve, but only sprinkled a little here at 3 1/2 in eve. Jim hilled cotton in Luckett field today and Willie and I plowed cotton with Joe and mule, most of day. We finished 2nd Cane hollow late in eve and plowed a little in water hole part.

Sat. 6th. Bright and warm till 3 in eve and clouded up then and a thunder cloud passed around NW and W from NE at 4 to 5 and a dark one blew up here at 5 from E of N and we had a good heavy rain, and needed very much, with some little wind and very little thunder and rained slowly till 8 at night. Jim hilled cotton in Luckett field in morn and finished there and Willie and I plowed cotton in water hole cut and in SW corner till 11 in morn with 4 furrows. I hauled a cart load of oak wood from NW of Wiley's at 2 to 3 1/4 in eve and cut up some and I milked in a slow rain with overcoat on late in eve.

Sun. 7th. Bright and warm most of day but a pleasant breeze from E of N till 4 in eve and we had a little hard shower at 5 in eve from E. Wiley went to his Pa's early in morn and returned late in eve and Rena and Bernice here most of day and Gordon and Tigner D and Dickie C here most of day and Dixie and B C and their 2 little children here in eve (from Lewis').

Mon. 8th. Bright and warm most of day, but thundershowers passed around some in eve, near here, but only dropped here at 2. Willie and Jim layed vines on rows, in gaps, in our potatoe patch in Gate cut in morn. I plowed them out with 4 furrows with Joe at 7 1/2 to 11 in morn and at 2 to 5 in eve. Willie plowed cotton in lower part of Pine corner, with mule, in eve and Jim layed vines for me in potatoe patch till 4 1/2 in eve and hoed cotton in old Cane hollow late in eve.

Tue. 9th. Bright and warm till 1 1/2 in eve and rained around in little thundershowers most of eve from E but only sprinkled here at 3 1/2 in eve and cloudy and very sultry most of eve. Jim hoed cotton in old Cane hollow today and Willie and I plowed cotton in SW corner most of day, with Joe and mule, with 4 furrows, laying it by. Wiley is on jury and went to town on yesterday and today.

Wed. 10th. Bright and very warm most of day. It rained around in little thundershowers some in eve, but none here. Jim hoed cotton in old Cane hollow today and finished there. Willie and I plowed cotton in SW corner and in 3rd Cane hollow most of day, with Joe and mule. Joe hooked his left hind heel on singletree and split the skin of it in morn. Rena and Bernice here most of day and Seymour dined here too. Wiley attended court again today.

Thu. 11th. Bright and warm and a dry breeze from N and no rain in sight today. Willie and I plowed cotton in 3rd Cane hollow and finished there at 9 in morn and we plowed cotton on hilltop of Luckett field till 10 1/2 and part of eve and we rode around to see corn there late in eve. Jim hoed cotton on H ridge in morn and rode Dan to Cohen's in eve and got 1/2 bu meal. Nellie went to Wiley's late in eve and stayed there all night.

Fri. 12th. Bright, nearly clear, and very warm and dry from N all day, but thundered far off late in eve. Jim hoed cotton on H ridge today. Willie and I plowed cotton on hilltop of Luckett field till 11 in morn and finished there and we plowed sugar cane in old cow pen corner and a few rows of cotton on W side of orchard in eve.

Sat. 13th. Bright, nearly clear, and warm and dry from N all day, but thundered and lightened in W and NW at dark in a cloud in sight. Jim hoed cotton on H ridge in morn and didn't work in eve. Willie hoed his watermelons in morn and rode the mule to Clara's in eve. I drove Joe to cart to Cohen's in morn and got a bbl flour for us and a 1/2 bbl flour and 1/2 bu meal and 50 cts. meat for Wiley and I carried them on to Wiley's and got back home by 11 and I hauled a cart load of oak wood from NW of Wiley's by 3 1/2 in eve and hoed most of garden by 5 3/4.

Sun. 14th. Bright and warm and dry from N and no rain in sight. Lewis and 3 of his little boys here awhile in morn and Buddy and Billy Lindsey came at 11 and here till late in eve. Wiley and Rena and Bernice here late in eve.

Mon. 15th. Bright and warm and dry all day but thundered in a cloud, in sight, in E most of eve. Jim hoed cotton on H ridge in morn and hoed in a little patch in new ground cotton and watermelons at back of field in eve. Willie and I plowed cotton and cane in orchard, with Joe and mule, till 10 3/4 in morn and finished there and we plowed cotton in locust ground (new ground) at back of field most of eve running 4 furrows.

Tue. 16th. Bright and warm and dry all morn and till 4 in eve and clouded up then from E and rained around near in thundershowers at 4 to 6 but only sprinkled here at 4 1/2 to 5 1/4. Jim hoed cotton in locust ground at back of field in morn and part of eve. Willie and I plowed cotton there in locust ground and new ground just beyond it till 11 in morn. An agent brought an enlarged picture of Bernice to Nellie and she paid him $4 for it, instead of $2, in morn and Willie rode Joe on after him at 11 1/2 and came up with him in Woodville late in eve and made him return $2 and an apology and Willie got home at dark. Miss Carry Chambers and Miss Florence Smith here most of day.

Wed. 17th. Bright and warm and dry till 2 in eve, and cloudy all eve and rained around in thundershowers most of eve and near here at 2 1/2, but none here. Jim hoed cotton in locust ground and in new ground just beyond today and Willie and I plowed cotton most of day in the new ground and where Cap's house stood and we finished there and last of our cotton by late in eve.

Thu. 18th. Bright, and warm and dry till 2 in eve, and clouded up from NE and rained around in thundershowers most of eve and we had a good hard one at 4 to 5 and slowly till 7 and much needed too. Jim hoed cotton in new ground in back of field in morn and I hauled out 7 cart loads of cow manure with Joe and put on E end of Gate cut in morn and Willie cut down boat corn stalks there and spread the manure and broke up ground on it with the mule for slips by 10 1/2 in morn. We didn't work in eve on account of rain.

Fri. 19th. Bright and warm and no rain here, but rained around some in thundershowers in eve. Willie and Jim and I set out yam vines on E end of Gate cut in morn and finished them by 9 1/2 and Willie and Jim walked around in field. Willie rode Joe and Jim rode the mule to Cohen's in eve to get the new buggy which Cohen ordered for Nellie but it hadn't come in. I walked to Wiley's at 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 and carried a few peaches and apples and figs and I hoed some tomatoes, in garden, and put bushes and weeds around them.

Sat. 20th. Bright and warm most of day and no rain here but thundered and rained NE of here late in eve and at night not far off. Willie and Jim hoed some cotton in hollow in orchard early in morn and I hoed some okra there and all of beans - both pole and butter beans - by 10 1/2. Nellie and Rena and Bernice drove mule to Dixie's buggy and Wiley rode Goulden and all went to town early in morn and returned at 3 in eve. Aunt Margaret cooked dinner for Minnie.

Sun. 21st. Bright and warm till 12 and we had a little hard sprinkle at 1 and cloudy and thundered in E and NE at 2 to 4 and we had a good hard shower at 4 1/4 to 5 and slowly till 7 from E and was much needed too. Willie and Minnie and baby drove Joe to Dixie's buggy to Mrs. James' in morn early to stay until tomorrow. I walked to Wiley's early in morn and Rena and Bernice came back with me and we brought 1 large watermelon and a muskmelon from Wiley's. Robert James and Mary and Luster and Lucile came in their hack at 10 in morn and left at 4 in eve. Wiley rode Dan to his Pa's early in morn and didn't return by 8 1/2 at night. I milked our 4 cows in the slow rain, with overcoat on, late in eve and went to Wiley's and milked 2 of his cows and put out his calves and fed his hogs and cats and got home by 8 1/2. Rena and Bernice stayed here at night.

Mon. 22nd. Bright and warm till late in eve and rained S of here then from E - but none here. I set out vines on the 6 rows of Spanish potatoes on SE corner of H ridge (in the gaps) and fed hogs and calves on corn stalks by 10 in morn. Willie and Minnie and baby returned from Mrs. James' at 10 1/2 in morn and Willie and Jim hoed cotton in SW corner in eve. Jim hoed there in morn and I hauled 2 cart loads of oak wood from NW of Wiley's in eve. Wiley and Rena and Bernice dined here. Wiley returned from his Pa's in morn.

Tue. 23rd. Cloudy and damp and a dark cloud came up from E, or S of E, at 10 in morn and rained slowly till 12 and quit and cloudy some all eve. Willie and Jim hoed cotton in SW corner most of day. I had a dull pain in my head last night and had vertigo and vomiting with it early in morn but got better at 7 in morn and I pulled grass out of our potatoe patch in Gate cut most of day. I carried a few peaches to Wiley's at 1 1/2 to 2 1/4.

Wed. 24th. Cloudy and calm and very little sunshine all morn and rained most of eve and all night from S or E of S with some distant thunder - a big fall of water in all. Willie and Jim hoed cotton in SW corner in morn and I pulled grass out of yams in Gate cut most of morn. Pa had a spell of numbness at 10 3/4 in morn. West and Chunk here most of eve. I milked with overcoat on and got nearly wet late in eve.

Thu. 25th. Cloudy and rained in showers from SW most of day and very wet weather. Lewis came early in morn to get Willie to go with him to C. W. Henderson's to get a Jersey cow and calf but didn't go on account of rain. Nellie and I walked to Wiley's in a slow rain in eve.

Fri. 26th. Bright and warm most of day but we had a hard shower from SW at 1 1/2 in eve. I rode Goulden to Cohen's in morn and got some meal and coffee and lard and sugar for us and 5 lbs coffee for Wiley and I returned at 11. Willie rode Joe and went with Lewis to C.W. Henderson's and they drove a Jersey cow and calf home for Lewis in morn and Willie rode Joe and went with Buddy and Sims and caught 2 hogs in Sims' field in eve. I packed in some corn stalks for cows and cut up good deal of wood in eve. Rena and Bernice here in eve.

Sat. 27th. Bright and warm from E in morn and till 2 in eve and cloudy and rained around in thundershowers at 2 to 4 1/4 but only sprinkled here at 4. Willie rode Joe to Cohen's in morn and again in eve and got the new buggy in eve, which Charlie ordered for Nellie. I pulled grass out of yam patch in Gate cut most of morn and I shaved and blacked my shoes and got ready to go to camp meeting on tomorrow in eve. Nellie and Minnie cooked in eve.

Sun. 28th. Cloudy and warm and dropped rain some till 9 1/2 in morn and bright and warm balance of day. Nellie and Rena and Bernice drove Bonnie to new buggy and Wiley and I drove Joe to our old high buggy and all went to camp meeting in morn and returned just after sunset. Willie and Minnie home today and Pa in bed all day.

Mon. 29th. Bright and warm and no rain today, but thundered and rained in sight in SE in eve. Pa in bed all day. Willie and Jim hoed cotton in 3rd Cane hollow all day and I hoed and pulled grass out of our planted potatoes in Gate cut till 10 1/2 in morn and I walked to Wiley's at 1 1/2 to 3 and carried a few figs and I hoed some in garden late in eve.

Tue. 30th. Bright and warm and no rain but thundered far off most of eve. Willie and Jim hoed cotton in 3rd Cane hollow in morn and Jim in eve. Cousin Gus and wife and little William here today and Rena and Bernice here most of eve. I pulled grass out of yam patch in Gate cut till 11 in morn. Pa in bed today. I packed and cut up some wood and brought a sk of green corn from field late in eve.

Wed. 31st. Bright and very warm till 3 in eve and cloudy and sultry and rained around near in thundershowers at 3 to 6 1/2 but only dropped here at 6. Willie and Minnie drove mule to new buggy to camp meeting early in morn and returned late in eve and Nellie kept Carmell here all day. Rena and Bernice here all day and Wiley and Doug dined here too. I pulled grass out of yam patch in Gate cut till 10 1/2 in morn and I hoed some in garden in eve. Pa still in bed.
