JULY 1891

Wed. July 1st. Bright, warm and getting very dry. I barred off patch of young yellow corn on hilltop of Cherry cut (where I cut down Adam's early corn) with Salome by 8 1/2 in morn and Pa and Willie hoed it (about 1 acre) and they hoed Pa's watermelon and tomatoe patch by little spring in eve. I hoed in Cane hollow on SE side of H ridge most of day.

Thu. 2nd. Bright and warm till late in eve - showered around some and sprinkled here after sunset at dusk. I plowed Salome in morn and 2 hours in eve and finished our sugar cane running 6 furrows. Pa and Willie hoed in their cotton in cane holllow in morn and they hoed over all of cut of my cotton by front gate on W side. Nellie and Rena drove Larry to our buggy to Mr. Jim Fugler's in morn and came back at dusk and brought Julia Fugler with them.

Fri. 3rd. Bright and quite warm and dry and thunderclouds passed around N from the E at 3 1/2 to 6 in eve, but none here. I plowed in Pa's and Willie's fence row cotton with Hattie all morn with 4 furrows. Pa and Willie hoed awhile in Cane hollow and some on H ridge in morn. Pa, Willie and I fixed our little gate N of new ground on cowpasture wire fence where we put out our cows, putting in a new post in eve.

Sat. 4th. Bright but cloudy some all day and thundershowers passed around in eve and sprinkled enough to lay dust here. I plowed Hattie till 9 in morn and finished Pa and Willie's fence row cotton with 4 furrows. Pa and I drove Hattie to buggy to Turnbull's in eve at 12 1/2 to 6 to primary meeting and stopped by Cohen's on way home and got some things.

Sun. 5th. Cloudy and began to rain slowly from SE at 8 in morn and lasted till late in eve and began again at dark and lasted all night...a soaking rain and much needed but wind blew down corn badly. All of us home all day. Bud and Gussie and Gordon here most of day and we had watermelons, lemonade, and cake. Julia Fugler here also. Dan and Nat here late in eve.

Mon. 6th. Cloudy and showered all day from SE and very wet. We did nothing in morn. Dan and Bud got some yam vines here at 2 in eve and I set out some in gaps in our old potatoes and in slip patch in new ground in eve and got wet in rain.

Tues. 7th. It rained all last night and rained heavily here at 7 1/2 to 11 in morn and bright in eve. We did nothing in morn. Pa, Willie and I got some lathing and rafters and plate and 2 posts for a little shed over milk safe on E side of our house in eve.

Wed. 8th. Cloudy and showers passed around from NW and sprinkled several times here but bright and shiny most of day. Pa, Willie and I put up covered shed on E side of house over safe and finished it late in eve. George Fugler came in a buggy at 11 and carried Julia home in eve.

Thu. 9th. Bright and pleasant from NE. I scraped slips and hoed around fruit trees in orchard most of day. Pa and Willie helped me in morn and they hoed in cotton on H ridge all eve.

Fri. 10th. Bright and pleasant from the E. I arose with headache, but hoed in slips in new ground till 8 1/2 and began to vomit then and lay down balance of day and vomited.

Sat. 11th. Bright and warm from the E. I went in buggy with Sims to town in morn and there most of day settling difficulty between him and Moffit Johnson. Mr. Jim Fugler and wife here most of day and they and Pa and Nellie went to Clara's in eve. Willie there most of day. Dan and Bud both sick with chills and fevers.

Sun. 12th. Bright and warm from E. Willie stayed at Clara's last night and came home in morn and Nellie and I went there at 9 in morn and there till late in eve. Lewis and family came there in eve. Bud was better and up and Dan still in bed.

Mon. 13th. Bright and warm most of day and thundershowers passed around some in eve but none here. Pa and Willie hoed cotton in Gate cut all day and I cut vines off old pototoes and scraped them and finished late in eve. Nellie and Rena drove Hattie to buggy to town in morn and back by 11 3/4.

Tue. 14th. Bright and warm from W. and thundered far off in eve good deal. I plowed out all of our potatoes, old ones and slips by 10 in morn with Hattie in new ground and Pa, Willie, and I finished hilling them with hoes by 11 and we planted some Irish potatoes in SE corner of orchard for a late patch at 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 in eve. Pa and Willie hoed cotton in Gate cut in eve and I plowed Salome most of eve and plowed cut of cotton by front gate on W side and some on H ridge, running 2 furrows in middles and laying by.

Wed. 15th. Bright and warm in morn and thundershowers passed around near at 2 and sprinkled here and cloudy most of eve. I plowed out cotton middles with 2 furrows all day. I finished H ridge by 11 1/2 in morn with Hattie and plowed Salome most of eve in Gate cut. Pa and Willie hoed all day in Gate cut of cotton.

Thu. 16th. Bright and warm and no rain, but thundered around all eve. I plowed Hattie all morn and finished Gate cut of cotton running 2 furrows in middles. Pa and Willie finished hoeing that cut by 8 1/2 in morn and hoed in Cherry cut till 11 1/4. Pa, Willie, and I walked over to Graves' pasture in eve and brought back 2 of our cows, Kate and Gipsy, and their 2 heifers and 3 of our colts which Bev Sims drove over there nearly 2 weeks ago.

Fri. 17th. Cloudy all day and showered around some but only sprinkled here 2 or 3 times. I plowed Hattie all morn in Pine corner cotton running 4 furrows and plowed Salome in eve and finished Pine corner and plowed some in fence row cut. Pa and Willie hoed most of day in Cherry cut of cotton.

Sat. 18th. Bright but thundershowers passed around W from NW at 1 to 3 but no rain here. Pa and Willie hoed in Cherry cut of cotton most of morn. I plowed Salome most of morn and finished fence row cut of cotton with 2 furrows in middles and plowed some of late yellow corn with 4 furrows on hilltop of Cherry cut. I drove Hattie to cart to Cohen's in eve and got a bbl flour and some other things on credit.

Sun. 19th. Bright, warm and no rain. Dixie and Seymour went to Ft. Adams early in morn and returned at midnight. Dan and Florida Floyd here most of day. Lewis and Cousin Tom here awhile in eve. Willie rode Hattie and Rena went in jumper with Gussie to chapel to preaching at noon and got home at midnight.

Mon. 20th. Bright and thundershowers passed around some late in eve but none here. Pa and Willie hoed in Cherry cut of cotton in morn. I plowed Salome and finished late yellow corn and whip peas on poor NE part of Cherry cut with 4 furrows by 10 1/4 in morn and picked some dry whip peas and some Wellborn peas by 11 3/4 and Pa, Willie, Dixie, Rena and I shelled them at 1 to 2 3/4 and I planted them in late corn where I plowed in morn (in eve) but did not finish. Nellie went home with Clara in morn and came home at 4 in eve and sent Willie to Clara's to go for Dr. for Bud. He was quite sick in eve with chills and fever.

Tue. 21st. Bright and warm till 2 1/2 and we had a good hard shower at 3 to 4 from SE and much needed. I rode Salome to Clara's early in morn and Dr. McGehee came at 10 to see Bud and I went on to town and got some medicine for him at 10 1/4 to 1 1/4. Pa and Willie hoed most of day in Cherry cut of cotton and finished there late in eve. I finished planting whip peas on poor NE part of Cherry cut late in eve.

Wed. 22nd. Bright and quite warm till 2 1/2 and clouded up from E then and thundershowers passed around most of eve but none here. I plowed out cotton middles with 2 furrows in Cherry cut with Hattie in morn and hoed in my garden on SE side of H ridge most of eve. Pa and Willie hoed in Cherry cut of cotton and SW of there most of day. Mrs. Wigner and Adah stopped here at 1 (on way home from town) and stayed all eve.

Thu. 23rd. Bright and warm from E all morn and clouded up at 2 (and all eve) and we had a good hard shower at 5 3/4 to 6 1/4 and another at 7 and much needed. I finished plowing cotton in Cherry cut (and last of our cotton for this year) by 9 in morn with Hattie and hoed in my garden in Cane hollow on SE side of H ridge till 5 3/4 in eve. Pa and Willie hoed in their new ground cotton W and SW of Cherry cut till rain at 5 3/4 in eve.

Fri. 24th. Cloudy but sun shined some in morn and some in eve. We had a hard shower at 11 1/2 and another at 12 and another at 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 from S of E. Pa, Willie and I hoed in new ground cotton SW of Cherry cut and finished there by 9 1/2 and ate some watermelons there and quit. Willie carried 2 watermelons and few peaches to Clara's on Hattie at 10 1/4 to 11 3/4.

Sat. 25th. It rained slowly here from before day till 7 1/2 and quit and rained again at 3 untill after dark slowly from SW. Pa and Willie did nothing. I drove Hattie to buggy to Cohen's at 8 to 12. Willie and I picked some dry whip peas to feed on in eve.

Sun. 26th. Bright and warm from NW and no rain. I drove Hattie to buggy to Clara's in morn and brought Mary and Clara's 2 little children back in buggy and Clara and Nat and Bud came through and here till late in eve. We had some fine watermelons at 11 and have had them every day for nearly a month.

Mon. 27th. Bright and quite warm till 1 and a thunder cloud came up then from SW but only dropped rain here and cloudy all eve some.

Pa, Willie, and I hoed cotton most of day in Cane hollow. Nellie at Clara's most of day.

Tue. 28th. Bright and warm till 11 1/2 in morn and a dark cloud came up from S of W then but only sprinkled rain here. Pa, Willie and I hoed cotton in Cane hollow most of day. I had a dull pain in left side of my head most of yesterday and last night and had it all today and all night.

Wed. 29th. Bright and warm from SW and no rain. Pa and Willie hoed in Cane hollow most of day. I hoed there till 10 in morn and came home with headache and lay down all eve and began to vomit at 5 in eve and lasted till midnight.

Thu. 30th. Bright and warm most of day from west and a cloud came up at 3 in eve and we had a good little shower then from W. Pa, Willie and I hoed cotton all morn in Cane hollow. Mr. Bank Fugler and Mary F. came here at 11 1/2 and left late in eve.

Fri. 31st. Bright and warm till 2 and we had a little shower then and cloudy and quite warm after then. Pa, Willie and I hoed cotton in Cane hollow till 10 in morn and finished there. Willie rode Hattie to Cohen's in eve and Pa hoed some in Pine corner and I picked 3 sacks of dry peas, 1 of Wellborn peas, in eve.
