JANUARY 1920
Thu. Jan. 1st. Bright and a cold wind from N all day and a hard freeze at night. Willie worked on wagon tongue most of day making a new hound. I didn't work any today - my left hand is sore. Minnie and Carl and Annabel James came at dusk.
Fri. 2nd. Bright, nearly clear, and a frost and hard freeze in morn but pleasant in sun in eve. Willie rode Buck to Bro Tom's in morn and came back late in eve. I chopped pine in field in morn.
Sat. 3rd. Bright, nearly clear, and a frost and freeze in morn. Willie drove Sandy and Buck to town in morn and returned late in eve. I made a wire gate to cow pen today. Katie and Lucile James came just after dark.
Sun. 4th. Bright and a frost and freeze in morn and a chilly wind from NE all day and night too. Willie drove Sandy and Buck to Ford's and carried Carmel in morn and returned after dark. Nellie and Charles and Carl walked to Dixie's in morn.
Mon. 5th. Bright in morn and a chilly wind from NE and a freeze in morn and cloudy in eve and began to rain just after dark and wind from SE and rain lasted all night. Willie and Dud and Wiley killed and cleaned and cut up 5 hogs today and finished in eve. I kept fire for them in morn.
Tue. 6th. Cloudy and a damp SE wind all day and rained some in night. Willie put his meat in pickle in morn and hunted cattle in eve. I dug up briars just N of sugar cane patch in morn.
Wed. 7th. Cloudy and a damp S wind all day and rained some in eve. Nellie cooked the lard in morn and I got wood for her and dug up briars N of sugar cane patch. Wiley and Dud brought Olla Veal's pea thresher here after dark from Lanehart's.
Thu. 8th. Cloudy and no sun and sprinkled rain from S in morn and in eve and windy and changed to NW late in eve and we had a big washing rain till in night. They threshed peas here in morn and finished Willie's peas in eve and moved the thresher to Wiley's and threshed some there late in eve. I dug out briars out N of here in morn. Charles and I got cows in rain late in eve.
Fri. 9th. Cloudy and cold from N all day. They threshed peas all day at Wiley's. I dug up briars out N of here in morn and helped Willie to feed and attend to stock in eve.
Sat. 10th. Bright but cloudy some and cold but not quite cold enough to freeze all day. Minnie and Lucile drove Sandy and Buck to town in morn and returned in eve. They threshed peas at Wiley's in morn and finished. I dug up briars out N of here in morn after getting wood for Mary to wash.
Sun. 11th. Cloudy and cold but not quite cold enough to freeze all day and rained a litle late in eve and through the night. All of us home all day.
Mon. 12th. Cloudy and no sun and chilly from NE and sprinkled and dropped rain most of day and night too. Willie and Dud and Wiley hauled all of peas and hulls here from Wiley's in morn and carried a load of peas to town in eve and returned before dark. I chopped some pine out N of here in morn and packed it to sugar cane patch.
Tue. 13th. Cloudy and sprinkled rain some in morn and no sun today and cold. Willie and Wiley carried a load of peas to town in morn and returned in eve. I chopped pine N of here and packed it to fence early in morn and got wood and water and helped Willie with stock in eve.
Wed. 14th. Cloudy and no sun and cold but no rain. Dud and Wiley cut wood today. I chopped pine out N of here and packed it to fence in morn and got wood and shucked corn and helped Willie with stock in eve.
Thu. 15th. Cloudy and no sun and a little warmer today and rained some in night. Willie drove Buck and Sandy to town in morn and had 2 teeth pulled and returned in eve. Dud and Wiley cut wood near Wiley's today. I chopped pine out N of here in morn and finished it.
Fri. 16th. Cloudy and no sun and began to rain at 9 in morn and lasted till 3 1/2 in eve from NW. I began to cut briars just N of old garden in morn and rain stopped me at 9 1/2 and got wood and helped Willie with stock in eve.
Sat. 17th. Clear and a beautiful and pleasant day from N. Willie and Lucile drove Buck and Sandy to town in morn and returned late in eve. Wiley and Dud drove wagon to town in morn and returned at dark. I patched wire fence at NW corner of old garden and cut briars there in morn.
Sun. 18th. Clear and a pleasant day and wind from SW. All went to SS in eve but Nellie and me and Bro Dawson preached there.
Mon. 19th. Foggy till 9 in morn and bright and warm from SW balance of day. Willie piled up manure at hog pen and cow pen in morn. Dud and Wiley went to a burying today. I cut briars on West side of old garden in morn.
Tue. 20th. Bright but cloudy some and windy from SW. Willie and Dud and Wiley sawed and split wood near Wiley's today. I cut briars just S of old garden in morn.
Wed. 21st. Foggy early in morn and bright from SW after 10 in morn. Willie and Dud and Wiley sawed and split wood as on yesterday. I cut briars S of old garden in morn.
Thu. 22nd. Foggy and wet in morn and bright and warm from SW in eve. Willie and Dud cut wood in morn and Wiley hauled wood all day with the mules and Buck and Sandy from near Wiley's. I cut briars out S of old garden in morn.
Fri. 23rd. Cloudy and a damp S wind till late in eve and began to rain at 5 and lasted all night with some little thunder and a very big fall of water in all. Wiley hauled wood all day as on yesterday and finished and got nearly wet. I cut briars in calf pasture in morn.
Sat. 24th. It rained all last night and all today from N slowly and quite cold and rained on most of night too. We did nothing but get wood and feed stock.
Sun. 25th. Cloudy and no sun and cold from N but not quite cold enough to freeze all day. All of us home all day and in house most of day. Gordon here awhile in eve.
Mon. 26th. Cloudy and no sun and cold from N all day but not quite cold enough to freeze. Willie drove Sandy and Buck to town in morn and returned in eve. I cut briars in calf pasture in morn and got wood and water and helped Willie with stock in eve.
Tue. 27th. Cloudy and no sun and about as cold as yesterday from N. Minnie and Lucile drove Buck and Sandy to town in morn to burying of Hugh McCraine and returned in eve. Willie piled up manure today. I cut briars in calf pasture in morn.
Wed. 28th. Cloudy and no sun and wind cold from N. Willie hunted his hogs today. Wiley and Dud cleaned off ground today. I cut briars in calf pasture in morn after getting wood for Mary to wash.
Thu. 29th. Cloudy and no sun and cold from N and rained a little in eve and night too. Willie found the 2 red sows in morn and put the biggest one in pen to have pigs. Dud and Wiley cleaned off ground in field today. I cut briars in calf pasture in morn.
Fri. 30th. Cloudy and no sun and wind cold from N and dropped rain some today. Wiley and Dud cleaned off ground today. Willie drove Sandy and Buck to Ford's for Carmel today. I cut briars in calf pasture in morn and got wood and water and fed in eve.
Sat. 31st. Bright and warmer today. Dud drove wagon to Rowan's for hogs today. Willie drove Sandy and Buck to town in morn and returned late in eve. I cut briars in calf pasture in morn. Our biggest red sow had 8 pigs in pen today.
