JANUARY 1918

Tue. Jan. 1st. Clear and a hard freeze in morn but warmer today and nearly all thawed by late in eve. Willie rode Daisy to see old man Clark in eve. I chipped pine in field in morn. Carmel and Marion drove Buck to school in morn.

Wed. 2nd. Clear and wind from NW and no freeze in morn but ice not all melted and cold again late in eve and at night. I chopped pine in field in morn after getting wood for Leah to wash.

Thu. 3rd. A hard freeze in morn but calm and a little warmer in eve. LaSassier and wife and baby came late yesterday eve and left here at 1 1/4 in eve. Dud hauled wood from field all day and one load of pine late in eve.

Fri. 4th. Bright, nearly clear, and a hard freeze in morn but wind from SE and warmer in eve. Willie and Dud killed and dressed a young sow and sawed some wood in morn and Willie hunted his hogs in eve. I chopped pine in field in morn.

Sat. 5th. Cloudy and a damp wind from SW all day and began to rain in thunder showers from SW at dark and lasted till 10 in night - a big rain in all. Willie and Minnie drove Buck to town in morn and returned at 3 in eve. I chopped pine in field in morn.

Sun. 6th. Bright and a cold wind from W of N all day. Charles and Carl and I walked to Wiley's and back in morn. Willie and Minnie and all of children walked to SS in eve.

Mon. 7th. Clear and a hard freeze in morn and didn't thaw in shade all day. I chopped pine in field in morn and shucked corn and got wood and fed in eve. Willie hunted his hogs in eve.

Tue. 8th. A hard freeze in morn but wind from S and cloudy in eve and warmer and rained a little in early part of night. Willie helped Wiley to kill hogs in morn and he and Bunges took wagon to Lanehart's in eve and brought Ollie Veal's pea huller here and set it in old gallery room. I chopped pine in morn.

Wed. 9th. Clear and very cool from N. Willie and Ollie Veal and Dud and Dago and Bunges and Babers threshed peas all day in gallery room. I put up cows and 3 cows out on creek early in morn and got wood for Leah to wash and cut up good deal of stove wood.

Thu. 10th. A light freeze in morn and a chilly wind from E and cloudy all day and began to rain late in eve and rained a good deal through the night with some thunder. Willie and hands threshed peas all day. I chopped pine in field in morn. A stove man Danault dined here and here all night.

Fri. 11th. It rained last night from NW and wind blew all today from W of N and began to snow at 11 in morn and lasted till late in eve and covered most of ground and very cold and clear all night. Danault left in morn. We did nothing but get wood and feed.

Sat. 12th. Clear and a cold wind from N and very little of snow melted off. We did nothing but get wood and feed today.

Sun. 13th. A hard freeze but wind from SE and cloudy some and good deal warmer in eve and nearly all of snow melted off. All home all day. Bernice came home on yesterday with German measles.

Mon. 14th. Dark cloudy and began to rain early in morn and lasted most of day from SW and a big fall of water in all and wind changed to NW late in eve and cold at night. Ollie Veal and hands threshed peas all day. I got wood and water and shucked corn and fed.

Tue. 15th. A slight freeze in morn and bright today and clouded up late in eve and rained a little late in night. Ollie Veal threshed peas in morn and finished and Willie and hands killed and cleaned hogs (9) in eve. I got wood and shucked corn in morn and kept fire around pots in eve.

Wed. 16th. Bright, nearly clear, and a cold wind from W of N. Willie cut up the 9 hogs in morn and salted the meat in eve. I packed the meat from gallery room to meat house in morn after getting wood for Leah to wash and I beat up salt in eve. They threshed peas at Wiley's today.

Thu. 17th. Clear and a hard freeze in morn. Willie and I cut up wood early in morn. Nellie cooked lard today. Willie hunted his hogs in eve.

Fri. 18th. Clear and a hard freeze and wind cold from N and didn't thaw in shade all day. Willie and I shucked and shelled some bread corn in morn. Bro Dawson, the new preacher, came at 11 in morn and left late in eve. Katie James came at dusk.

Sat. 19th. Bright and a freeze in morn but wind from SE and cloudy in eve and began to rain from SW at 4 1/2 in eve and lasted till 9 in night and wind changed to NW. Willie rode Katie's horse and Katie and Carmel drove Buck to town and Dud drove wagon and carried corn to mill and all returned in eve. I chopped pine in morn and finished.

Sun. 20th. Cloudy and a cold wind from W of N and began to rain and sleet at 3 in eve and lasted most of night. Willie and Katie James and Carmel and Marion went to SS in eve and Bro Dawson preached there - first time. We fed in rain and sleet late in eve.

Mon. 21st. Cold and rained and sleeted and snowed some and covered ground and trees and everything with ice by late in eve and very cold all night. We did nothing but get wood and feed.

Tue. 22nd. Cloudy but sun shined a little but only melted a little of snow and ice and very cold at night again. We did nothing but get wood and feed.

Wed. 23rd. Bright, nearly clear, and most of snow and ice melted off. Wind from SW and good deal warmer in eve. Carmel and Katie James rode on horseback to Middleton's in morn and got some eggs and sugar and milk and made some ice cream in eve. Katie James went to Borland's in eve late.

Thu. 24th. Clear and wind from SW and most of snow and ice melted off but froze again at night - and white frost. I got wood for Leah to wash early in morn and cut up some wood and shucked corn and fed in eve. Willie and Carmel broke out with German measles today.

Fri. 25th. Clear and warm from SW and about all of snow and ice melted off by eve. I cut up some stove wood early in morn and Dud cut up some house wood. Willie and Carmel and Marion have German measles.

Sat. 26th. Warm and cloudy from SW and dropped rain a little in eve. I cut up good deal of stove wood in morn. Willie lay down most of morn and rode Buck to hunt hogs and cattle in eve. I shucked corn and got wood and fed in eve.

Sun. 27th. Warm and cloudy from S and sprinkled rain a little in eve and rained good deal slowly through night. All of us home and all but Carl and me have measles.

Mon. 28th. Cloudy and no sun and very cool from N. We did nothing but get wood and feed. Dud drove Buck to buggy to town in eve. Dr. Magruder came out to see Rena and Buddy sick with measles in morn. All here but Carl and me have measles.

Tue. 29th. Cloudy and no sun and chilly from E of N and began to rain at 3 1/2 in eve and lasted most of night - a big fall of water. Dud and Bunges cut and sawed wood in field till rain in eve. I cut up good deal of stove wood in morn and fed in eve.

Wed. 30th. Cloudy and chilly from N all day. Dud and Bunges didn't work today. I cut up good deal of wood in morn and shucked corn and fed in eve. All seem to be better of measles today.

Thu. 31st. Cloudy and chilly from N in morn and bright and sun shined all eve. Dud cut wood in field today. Willie drove Buck to town in morn and returned at 3 1/2 in eve. I cut up good deal of wood in morn and got wood for Leah to wash and I drove up old Lady and young Rose with young calves from near Ash spring in eve.
