JANUARY 1917

Mon. Jan. 1st. Cloudy and rained some early in morn but bright and warm from SW in eve. I picked up some pecans in morn. Henly brought Elma in morn and she taught school. The high school doesn't start till Wed. next. Carmel and Marion walked to Dixie's in morn and Carmel stayed there all night.

Tue. 2nd. Foggy and wet in morn and bright and warm from SW in eve. Willie cut wood in field today. I piled pine in field in morn.

Wed. 3rd. Cloudy and warm and sprinkled rain some in morn and in eve too from SW. Willie cut wood in field in morn and rode Daisie to hunt cattle in eve. I piled pine in field in morn.

Thu. 4th. Cloudy and warm and a damp wind from SW all day and sprinkled rain some in eve and we had a big rain at midnight from NW with some wind. Willie and Dud hauled wood from field with Ned and Ella till 2 in eve. I got wood and water for Leah to wash early in morn and piled pine in field balance of morn.

Fri. 5th. Bright, nearly clear, and a very cold wind from NW and clear and calm at night and cold. Willie cut up good deal of wood in morn and rode Daisie to see Preston Veal about renting land in eve. I piled pine in field in morn.

Sat. 6th. Bright, nearly clear, and a frost and freeze in morn but pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. I piled pine in field in morn. Willie and Minnie drove Daisie to town in eve and returned at dusk. Marion and I fed in eve.

Sun. 7th. Bright and cool. Katie James and one of Morris Ogden's girls and Gordon dined here and all went to SS in eve.

Mon. 8th. Bright and cool. Willie and Dud and Sam and "Ros" threshed peas today. I piled pine in field in morn.

Tue. 9th. Bright and pleasant from W. Willie and Dud and Sam and "Ros" threshed peas all day. I piled pine in field in morn and finished it and Willie and I shelled some bread corn just after dinner. Cap Donnelly here most of eve.

Wed. 10th. Bright and a cool wind from NW. Willie and Dud and Sam and "Ros" threshed peas till 2 in eve and finished and sawed down the big white oak out NE of here in eve. I hoed strawberries in old garden in morn.

Thu. 11th. Clear and a cold wind from W of N all day. Wiley and Dago helped Willie and Dud to kill and clean and cut up 6 large meat hogs today. I helped some in morn.

Fri. 12th. Clear and a freeze in morn and a cold wind from SE all day and cloudy some all eve and at night. Nellie and Minnie cooked lard today and made sausage and Willie helped them. I cut up wood most of morn.

Sat. 13th. It began to rain slowly at daylight from SW and lasted till 10 in morn and changed to W of N and rain lasted all eve till dark and chilly in eve. We did nothing but get wood and feed.

Sun. 14th. Bright but cloudy some and a hard freeze in morn and wind cold from NE all day and ice in shade all day. Wiley got Daisie in morn to carry Bernice to Mr. Seward's in eve and brought Elma here at dark.

Mon. 15th. Cloudy and no sun and a freeze in morn but all thawed today and rained some in morn and in eve too with a cold wind from NE. Willie and Dud cut wood awhile in eve and rain stopped them. I did nothing but shuck corn and feed and get wood.

Tue. 16th. Cloudy and no sun and drizzled and dropped most of morn and rained good deal late in eve and wind cold from NE and drizzled most of night. Willie and Dud cut wood part of eve and got nearly wet. I did nothing but feed and get wood.

Wed. 17th. Cloudy and no sun and drizzled and sprinkled rain most of day and a cold breeze from NE. Willie and Dud cut wood part of day below our field. I got wood and shucked corn and fed.

Thu. 18th. Cloudy and no sun and chilly from NE and rained some in morn. Willie and Dud cut wood below our field part of day. I shucked corn and fed and got wood.

Fri. 19th. Cloudy and warmer today from SE. Willie and Dud cut wood below our field today and Willie rode Daisie and drove up a cow and yearling calf from our creek in eve. I got wood and shucked corn and fed in eve.

Sat. 20th. Cloudy and sprinkled rain some in morn and some late in eve too and wind from SE and warmer today. Dud drove our wagon and Dago Wiley's to town in morn and carried Willie's peas and Willie rode Daisie and Dud and Dago returned at 3 in eve and Willie at dark. I trimmed 2 rose bushes and sawed down -------trees in morn.

Sun. 21st. Cloudy and warm and windy from SW all day and sprinkled rain some in eve and we had a big rain just after dark from NW with some thunder. Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion went to SS in eve and Bro Ellis preached there.

Mon. 22nd. Cloudy and no sun and rained some in morn and in eve too and cool from NE. Willie and Dud split one cut of big white oak out NE of here today between showers. I patched yard pickets on S side of flower yard in morn.

Tue. 23rd. Cloudy and no sun and cool from NE and rained some in early part of night. Willie and Dud split up the big white oak out NE of here in eve. Dud rode Daisie to C.G McGehee's in morn and brought back a mare mule (for Frilby).

Wed. 24th. Cloudy and foggy early in morn but bright after 10 in morn and cool. Willie and Dud finished splitting the white oak into posts in morn and hauled them in eve out toward the big road SE of here with Ella and the new mule. I got wood for Leah to wash in morn and got a s'k of pine straw from field in eve.

Thu. 25th. Bright and a cold wind from W of N all day but pleasant in sun. Willie and Dud at Wiley's till late in eve helping him to kill hogs. I packed 10 turns of stable manure in old garden and put on strawberries in morn and shucked corn and fed and got wood in eve. Mrs. James and Luster and little Celina came in eve.

Fri. 26th. Bright, nearly clear, and a frost and freeze in morn but wind from S and good deal warmer in eve. Dud hauled wood today and Willie drove Daisie to Seward's for Bernice and returned at dark. I packed 10 turns of hen manure and put on strawberries in old garden in morn.

Sat. 27th. Cloudy and began to rain in little showers at 10 1/2 in morn and began to rain steadily at 1 1/2 in eve and rained all eve and some through the night - a big fall of water. Dud hauled wood all morn with Julia and the new mule. Mrs. James and Luster left at 9 1/2 in morn. We fed and got wood in rain in eve. I hoed strawberries in old garden till 10 1/2 in morn.

Sun. 28th. It rained some last night and rained most of today in little sprinkles from SW. All of us home all day. Bernice and Buddy here in eve. ----- brought Elma in eve.

Mon. 29th. It rained just before day from W and bright and warm most of day from W. Dud dug posts on E side of big bottom in morn and he and Willie put up new posts and moved wire in and changed going out road in eve. Willie rode Sandy and rented pasture from Preston Veal. I patched up pickets of old garden in morn.

Tue. 30th. Bright and warm from SW and no rain. Dud hauled wood all day with Ella and the new mule. Willie set some new posts at front gate and at back of field today and drove up a heifer with a young calf late in eve. I stopped around stables to keep chickens out in morn and around hay house in eve.

Wed. 31st. Cloudy and windy from SW all day and sprinkled and dropped rain some and we had good deal of rain from NW with some wind and thunder at midnight. Dud hauled wood all day from beyond our field and Willie cut some there. I hoed strawberries in old garden in morn.
