JANUARY 1914

Thu. Jan. 1st. Bright and cool and a damp breeze from SE all day and night too and rained some late in night. Willie cut vines and trees in calf pasture today. I got wood and water for Leah to wash in morn and shucked corn too and shelled some dry beans in eve and fed.

Fri. 2nd. It rained some just before day in morn and changed to NW and a cold wind from there all day. Willie cut vines and trees in calf pasture today. I cut up good deal of wood early in morn and shucked corn and shelled some dry beans and got wood and water and fed.

Sat. 3rd. Bright, nearly clear, and ice and a slight freeze in morn but a calm and pleasant day in sun. Willie and Marion drove Sandy to town in morn and had some of Marion's teeth worked on by C S Fugler and returned at dusk. I cut up good deal of wood and drew water and shelled some beans and fed today.

Sun. 4th. Cloudy some all day and a freeze and frost in morn and chilly from NE all day and rained and sleeted a little early in night. Nellie and Charles rode and Carl and Carmel and Marion walked to Dixie's in morn and returned late in eve. Willie went to SS in eve.

Mon. 5th. Bright but cloudy some all day and a freeze in morn and a chilly wind from NE all day. Willie and Marion drove Sandy to town in morn and had Marion's teeth worked on and returned late in eve. I cut up good deal of wood and shucked corn and shelled some dry beans and fed today.

Tue. 6th. A freeze in morn and bright and a cold wind from N but pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. Willie put a handle in his ax and cut up wood in morn and made a contract with Dud McWhorter to work here. I cut up wood and shucked corn in morn and helped Willie to drive some of Wiley's cattle out of our field in eve and fed.

Wed. 7th. Bright, nearly clear, and a very white frost and a killing freeze in morn but pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. Dud McWhorter moved his plunder here with our mules and wagon today. Willie and Marion drove Sandy to town at 12 1/2 in eve to have Marion's teeth filled and returned at sunset. I cut up good deal of wood and shucked some bread corn and fed today.

Thu. 8th. Bright and a frost and freeze in morn but pleasant from SW after 10 in morn. Willie cut up good deal of wood early in morn and hunted our cattle in eve. I shelled and winnowed some bread corn in morn and drew water through the day for tomorrow's washing.

Fri. 9th. Cloudy early in morn but bright and pleasant from SW after 10 in morn. Willie rode Sandy to Barber's mill early in morn and returned at 11 1/2 with 6 p'ks of meal. Willie and Marion drove Sandy to town in eve to have Marion's teeth filled. I got wood and water for Sophia to wash in morn and shucked corn and fed in eve.

Sat. 10th. Bright and a very cool wind from N all day. Willie and Marion drove Sandy to town in morn and had some of Marion's teeth filled and returned at sunset. I cut up wood in morn and got wood and water and fed in eve.

Sun. 11th. A freeze in morn and a chilly wind from N all day. Wiley and all of his family but Bernice (she went to Jack D's in morn) and Chunk and Nora and Clarence and Carrie and Edith all dined here and we had a gander for dinner.

Mon. 12th. A freeze in morn and cloudy and chilly all day from NE. Willie and Dud began work early in morn and cleaned up ground in new hollow in field all day. I cut up wood and drew water and shucked corn in morn and got wood and water and fed in eve.

Tue. 13th. Bright and chilly in morn early but not cold enough to freeze and pleasant after 10 in morn. Willie and Dud cleaned up in new hollow all day. I packed and cut up stove wood early in morn and cut and piled some pine in field till 11 in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water and fed in eve. Nellie and Bernice drove Nancy to see Mrs. Ogden in eve - she is sick. Bro J D Ellis here in eve.

Wed. 14th. Bright and dry and a white frost and freeze in morn but pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. Willie and Dud cleaned up ground in new Cane hollow today. I cut up wood and drew water for tomorrow's washing through the day.

Thu. 15th. Bright and frost in morn but pleasant from SW after 10 in morn. Willie and Dud sawed and piled logs in NE hollow today. I got wood and water for Sophia to wash all morn and shelled some beans and shucked corn and fed in eve.

Fri. 16th. Bright and pleasant from SW and dry. Willie and Dud cleaned up ground in new hollow today. I piled pine in field in morn and shucked corn and shelled some beans in eve.

Sat. 17th. Foggy and damp till 10 in morn and bright and pleasant balance of day. Willie and Dud cleaned up ground in new hollow in morn and Willie and Marion drove Sandy to town in eve and had last of Marion's teeth filled and returned at dark. I piled pine in field in morn and got wood and water and fed in eve. Katie and Annabelle James came at 2 in eve and here all night.

Sun. 18th. Cloudy and damp all morn and bright and pleasant from SW all eve. Wiley and Bernice and Carmel and Marion went in Surry to Meth church in town in morn and returned at 1 1/2. Katie and Annabelle James left at 11 1/2 in morn. Willie and Minnie and children walked to SS in eve and Nellie and Carl to Wiley's.

Mon. 19th. Foggy and wet till 10 in morn and bright and pleasant from S of W balance of day. Willie cut and split some poplar rails for hoe handles and cut some wood too in field and Dud hauled wood from field with mules all day. I cut up some wood and shucked some bread corn in morn and patched baby buggy in eve and fed and got wood and water.

Tue. 20th. Bright but cloudy some all day and a pretty high wind from W in morn but calmer in eve and pleasant. Willie and Dud hauled wood all morn from field and from cow pasture all eve. I hoed all of onions in garden in morn and shucked and shelled some bread corn in eve. Rena and Jack and Minnie and Charles and Carl walked to Lanehart's in morn and returned after sunset.

Wed. 21st. Bright and very cool and dry from N. Willie and Dud hauled one load of stable manure in garden and 3 loads in field in morn and Willie cleaned up ground in eve and Dud broke ground in patch E of here in eve with the mules (our first plowing). I shucked and shelled bread corn and drew water for washing today.

Thu. 22nd. Cloudy some but bright and cool from SE. Willie cleaned up ground and Dud broke ground in patch E of here with the mules today. I got wood and water for Sophia to wash in morn and shucked and shelled some bread corn in eve.

Fri. 23rd. Cloudy and no sun and a damp wind from SE all day and drizzled rain early in morn and in eve too and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 11 in night and we had a big rain with a little hail, some wind and thunder till 1 1/2 and needed too. Willie and Dud broke ground in patch E of here most of day. I shucked and shelled bread corn in morn and made a coop ----- one doz chickens in morn ---- in a slow rain.

Sat. 24th. We had a big rain last night and bright and cool from NW today. Willie rode Sandy and Dud drove the mules to wagon and carried a full bbl of bread corn to town and one doz young chickens and 7 old hens and Willie sold the hens for 60 cts each and the young chickens for 40 cts each and they returned at 3 1/2 in eve. I got wood and water and shucked corn and fed today.

Sun. 25th. Cloudy and very cool till 10 1/2 in morn and bright and pleasant balance of day. Gordon dined here. All but Nellie and Carl and me went to SS in eve and Bro Ellis preached there (first time) in eve.

Mon. 26th. Bright and pleasant from S. Willie and Dud broke ground in patch E of here till 10 in morn and in Gate cut balance of day. I drew good deal of water today and cut some wood and Minnie and I hung up our meat in eve to smoke it.

Tue. 27th. Bright and pleasant from S after 9 1/2 in morn - foggy till then. Willie and Dud broke ground all day in Gate cut. I cut up wood and drew good deal of water and made a hoe handle in morn and I walked in fields hunting Daisy's heifer in eve but didn't find her.

Wed. 28th. Bright but some clouds all day and windy from S all day. Willie and Dud broke ground all day. I got wood for Sophia to wash early in morn and cut up some wood and drew water and made a hoe handle and smoked our meat in morn and I rode Josie in Elmwood pasture and Lanehart property in eve hunting Daisy (cow) but didn't find her.

Thu. 29th. Bright and pleasant from S all day and rained some in the night and turned cool from NW. Willie and Dud broke ground in field today. I cut up wood and drew good deal of water and smoked our meat today.

Fri. 30th. Cloudy and no sun and quite chilly from NW all day. Willie and Dud broke ground today. I drew water and got wood and smoked meat and made a hoe handle today. I slept but little at night on account of cold weather all night.

Sat. 31st. Clear and a freeze and white frost in morn but pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. Willie and Dud threshed peas in old kitchen room all morn and Willie drove Sandy to town in eve. I smoked our meat and made a hoe handle and cut up wood today.
