FEBRUARY 1917

Thu. Feb. 1st. Bright and a very cold wind from W of N all day and clear at night and very cold. Dud hauled wood all day and hauled 2 load of pine and some pine wood too and finished. Willie cut some wood. I hoed up ground in NW corner of old garden in morn.

Fri. 2nd. Clear and very cold and a very hard freeze and didn't thaw any in shade all day and a cold wind from W of N all day. Willie and Dud chopped some in field today. I didn't work on account of cold.

Sat. 3rd. Clear and a very hard freeze in morn and didn't thaw in shade all day but wind from SE and warmer in eve and cloudy some late in eve and at night. Willie and Marion tried to get some pigs out of Lanehart's pasture in morn - but didn't - but they got them out late in eve. Willie rode Daisie to town in eve. Dud chopped in field in morn. I didn't work on account of cold.

Sun. 4th. Clear and a freeze in morn and a very cool wind from NW all day but pleasant in sunshine and wind cold from NW all night. Rena and Buddy went to Seward's yesterday and Wiley and Nellie and Jack and Gordon dined here. Willie and Minnie and Marion walked to SS in eve. Carmel went home with Joe and Marie Miller last Friday eve.

Mon. 5th. Clear and a very hard freeze and didn't thaw in shade all day and wind cold from W of N. Willie and Dud chopped in field today. I rehoed ground in NW corner of old garden in morn and it was frozen hard.

Tue. 6th. A hard freeze in morn but wind from SE and ground thawed today and cloudy in eve and rained late in night. Dud drove wagon and Willie rode Daisie to town in morn and carried 12 hogs averaging 144 lbs each and they returned late in eve. Willie sold the hogs to Tom Johns.

Wed. 7th. It rained slowly from before day till 8 1/2 in morn and quit but cloudy some all day and rained again in night. Willie and Dud put together plows in morn and chopped in field in eve. Carmel and Marion didn't go to school on account of rain. I got wood for Leah to wash in morn and shucked corn and fed all of stock in eve.

Thu. 8th. It rained some last night and very cloudy all morn and rained in showers from W of N at 12 to 4 in eve and quit and quite cool. Willie and Dud chopped in field in morn and shucked and shelled a bbl of bread corn in eve. I packed some stable manure in old garden and put between rows of strawberries in NE corner of garden in morn.

Fri. 9th. Clear and cool from NE. Willie rode Daisie in morn to Preston Veal's and he and Dud chopped in field in eve. I packed stable manure and put on ground in NW corner of garden in morn and fed stock in eve. Gus Dawson and Cap Donnelly ate supper here.

Sat. 10th. Bright and a slight freeze in morn but wind from S and good deal warmer in eve and cloudy some. Dud chopped in field in morn. Willie rode Daisie to hunt cattle in morn and he and Minnie drove her to Mrs. James' in eve. I packed chicken manure in old garden and put in NW corner and planted 8 rows of Irish potatoes there in morn and Marion and I fed all of stock in eve.

Sun. 11th. Cloudy and began to rain slowly at 1 1/2 in eve from NE and got harder with a cold E of N wind and lasted till dark and quit. Marion and I got wood and fed stock in rain. Willie and Minnie returned from Mrs. James' late in eve in rain.

Mon. 12th. Clear and a hard freeze in morn and a chilly wind from NE all morn but calm and warmer in eve. Dud rode Daisie to town to a dentist in morn and he and Willie chopped in field in eve. I took down wire around old dead pear tree near yard in morn and shucked corn and fed and got wood in eve.

Tue. 13th. Bright and a slight freeze in morn but wind from S and warmer in eve. Willie and Dud chopped in field today. I hoed strawberries in old garden in morn and shucked corn and fed and got wood in eve.

Wed. 14th. Cloudy and no sun and rained in little showers most of day from SW and we had a very big rain just after dark from NW with some thunder and wind. Dud and Sidney cleaned up ground part of day and Willie too. I didn't work on account of rain.

Thu. 15th. Cloudy and a chilly wind from NW till 4 in eve and cleared off then and clear and calm and cold all night. Dud and Sidney cut briars in morn and stalks in eve. I got wood for Leah to wash in morn and cut up some stove wood. Willie and Minnie strung and hung up our meat to smoke in eve.

Fri. 16th. Bright, nearly clear, and a white frost and freeze in morn but wind from SW and warmer in eve and cloudy. Dud and Sidney cleaned off ground in field today. Willie and I caught and put 2 doz hens in 2 coops to sell in morn and Willie drove up Kittie's spotted heifer with a heifer calf by dinner and Willie hunted other cattle in eve. I sewed s'ks in 2 baskets in morn.

Sat. 17th. Cloudy and began to rain slowly at 11 1/2 in morn and got harder and with thunder and lasted till 4 in eve - a very big fall of water from SW. Willie rode Daisie and Dud drove new mule and Julia to wagon to town and carried one bbl of corn and 2 doz hens to town in morn and returned late in eve.

Sun. 18th. Warm and cloudy and sprinkled rain several times in morn and rained a little shower in night from SW. Willie and Nellie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion went to SS in eve and Bro Ellis preached there.

Mon. 19th. Cloudy all day and dropped rain some in eve and we had a big shower at 7 1/2 to 8 at night from W with some thunder. Willie and Dud and Sidney cleaned up ground in field today. I cut up some wood in morn and hunted hens' nests and shucked corn and fed and got wood in eve.

Tue. 20th. Bright, nearly clear, and a calm and pleasant day - sun shined all day. Willie and Dud and Sidney worked on calf pasture fence putting up wire beyond Dud house all day. I cut up stove wood in morn and patched up horse box in stable in morn and shucked corn and got wood and fed in eve.

Wed. 21st. Bright, nearly clear, and sun shined all day and pleasant. Willie and Dud and Sidney worked on fence today. I got wood for Leah to wash early in morn and packed 10 turns of manure into new garden and put it where I had butter beans last year in morn.

Thu. 22nd. Foggy and wet till 11 in morn and bright and warm from SW in eve. Willie and Dud and Sidney worked on ditch in field in morn and Dud plowed and harrowed new garden in eve. I planted some mustard and radishes and lettuce and beets in old garden in morn.

Fri. 23rd. Warm and cloudy and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 11 in morn and we had a big rain with some thunder and wind till 12 and slowly till 4 in eve and quit. Dud and Sidney broke ground on H ridge till 11 in morn and did nothing balance of day on account of rain. I set out 4 rows of onion sets in new garden in morn. Lois Ellis came home with Carmel and Marion late in eve and they and Nellie and Charles walked to Wiley's at night.

Sat. 24th. Foggy and wet till 10 in morn and bright and warm balance of day. Dud and Sidney cleaned up field in morn. Willie and Minnie drove Daisie to town in eve. Carmel and Lois Ellis drove Julia (mule) to Dixie's in eve. I hunted hens' nests most of morn.

Sun. 25th. Bright and warm from S. Willie and I and Charles and Carl walked to Wiley's and back in morn. Carmel and Marion and Lois Ellis drove Daisie to town in morn and Carmel and Marion returned at dusk. Willie and Minnie and Charles and Carl walked to SS in eve.

Mon. 26th. Bright and warm from SW. Willie and Dud and Sidney planted sugar cane in patch N of here today and finished it. I set out 2 rows of onion sets in new garden and planted 2 double rows of peas there in morn and shucked corn and got wood and fed in eve.

Tue. 27th. Bright and warm from SW. Willie and Dud and Sidney planted Irish potatoes in patch N of here after manuring ground with cow manure and ashes in morn and they finished by 3 in eve and broke ground on H ridge late in eve. I planted 2 double rows of peas in new garden and hoed some strawberries in old garden by 11 1/2.

Wed. 28th. Warm and cloudy and rained some late in eve. Dud and Sidney broke ground all day and Willie cleaned up ground. I hoed strawberries in old garden till 11 in morn and planted one row of government peas in new garden by 11 3/4.
