FEBRUARY 1914

Sun. Feb. 1st. Clear and a freeze and frost in morn but a pretty and pleasant day in sun. Nellie at Wiley's today and I walked there and back in eve. Minnie and children walked to SS in eve. Willie unwell and did not go.

Mon. 2nd. Bright but some clouds all day and wind from SW. Willie cleaned off ground and Dud broke ground with the mules today. I made a hoe handle and smoked meat and shucked corn today.

Tue. 3rd. Bright and pleasant form SW. Willie and Dud broke ground today with both double teams. I smoked meat and drew water and cut up wood and sharpened some pickets for flower yard in morn and Minnie and I put our meat away in bbl in eve. All but me, went to Wiley's at night to Jack's birthday supper and returned at 10 at night.

Wed. 4th. Bright and pleasant but thundered in NW most of day but no rain in sight. Willie and Dud broke ground today with both double teams. I sharpened pickets in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water and fed in eve.

Thu. 5th. Foggy and wet till 9 1/2 in morn and bright and pleasant balance of day from SW but thundered in NW some in morn and in eve too. Willie and Dud planted sugar cane in patch E of here in morn and finished and they planted Irish potatoes in Coon hollow E of here in eve. I sharpened pickets in morn and shucked corn in eve and got wood and water and fed in eve. I had a headache and blindness in morn and took one Bond's pill.

Fri. 6th. Warm and cloudy and a damp breeze from SW all morn and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 1 1/2 in eve and we had a good soaking rain till 2 1/2 and bright balance of eve and cold all night from NW. Willie and Dud broke ground all morn and put up some of flower yard pickets (new ones) in NW corner late in eve. I set out 2 peach trees and 4 pear trees in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water and fed in eve.

Sat. 7th. Bright, nearly clear, and a freeze in morn and a cold wind from W of N all day and ice in shade all day. Willie and Dud put up new pickets on W side of flower yard in morn and Willie drove Sandy to town in eve. I sharpened last of pickets in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water and fed in eve.

Sun. 8th. Bright but hazy cloudy all day and a hard freeze in morn and ice in shade all day and wind from NE and chilly all day. Willie and Minnie and children walked to SS in eve.

Mon. 9th. Cloudy all day but bright and chilly from E. Willie and Dud cleaned up ground in morn and Willie broke ground in eve and Dud didn't work in eve on account of his baby being sick. I made a gate and set it up at W end of new room today.

Tue. 10th. Bright and cool from W of N. Willie and Dud broke ground all day. I stopped holes at bottom of pickets on W side of flower yard in morn and drew water through the day for horses.

Wed. 11th. Bright and a freeze and frost in morn and wind from SE and pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. Willie and Dud broke ground in morn and cleaned up ground in eve. I put up new pickets on E side of flower yard in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water and fed in eve. Nellie and Minnie went with the school children to see the saw mill run in eve.

Thu. 12th. Cloudy and a damp breeze from S all morn and began to rain slowly at 12 and lasted till 2 and sprinkled several times in eve and we had a big fall of rain in night. Willie and Dud broke ground in morn and didn't work in eve. I put up pickets at NE corner of flower yard in morn and finished last of them. Willie and I put a young sow and 10 pigs under pig shed in eve.

Fri. 13th. Bright and a cold wind from W of N all day. Willie and Dud cleaned up ground in morn and fixed water gaps on creek in eve. I got wood for Leah to wash and nailed up bbl staves around part of back room in morn.

Sat. 14th. A hard freeze and white frost in morn and cloudy and a chilly wind from N all day. Dud threshed peas in morn and hauled some wood for himself in eve. Willie hunted his sows with young pigs most of day and found them in eve. I didn't work today on account of cold. I got some pine straw in eve.

Sun. 15th. Bright and a hard freeze and frost in morn and windy and cold from N today but pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. All but Nellie and me and Charles and Carl went to SS in eve and Bro Adams preached there and Bro Ellis was there too. Rena here in eve.

Mon. 16th. Bright and a frost and freeze in morn but pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. Willie and Dud cleaned up ground in morn and broke ground in eve. I nailed boards and pickets on N side of back rooms to keep out chickens in morn and shucked corn and drew water and got wood in eve.

Tue. 17th. Willie and Dud broke ground today. I nailed up pickets on N side of new back room in morn and shucked corn and drew water and fed and got wood in eve.

Wed. 18th. Cloudy and a damp S wind all morn and rained some in eve and some in night too. Willie and Dud broke ground today. Dud plowed Frilby with Ella today and rode her first time too. I nailed up pickets on N side of new back room in morn and finished last of it.

Thu. 19th. We had some rain last night and cloudy and cool from N --- today. Willie and Dud broke ground today. I planted some radishes and lettuce and potatoes in garden in morn and drew water all day for tomorrow.

Fri. 20th. Cloudy and chilly from N all morn and sprinkled rain at 12 1/2 and bright and pleasant in sun in eve. Willie and Dud broke ground all day. Wiley drove Ella and Ned to wagon and carried 5 hogs to town in morn and sold to Mount. I hoed up ground in garden in morn to plant in peas and drew water through the day for Sophia to wash.

Sat. 21st. Bright, nearly clear, and a frost and slight freeze in morn but a breeze from S and pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. Dud broke ground with the mules in morn and Willie cleaned up ground and Willie drove Sandy to town in eve. I planted some peas in garden in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water and fed in eve.

Sun. 22nd. Bright and cool in morn and a damp S wind all day and cloudy some in eve and sprinkled rain a little at night. Willie and Charles and Marion walked to SS in eve and Bernice and Buddy and Carmel drove Nancy to town in eve to EP League meeting.

Mon. 23rd. It sprinkled rain a little last night and bright today from NW and cold at night from NW. Willie and Dud broke ground today. I put a new hoe on a new handle early in morn and hoed winter onions in NW corner of pasture by 11 in morn.

Tue. 24th. Bright and a freeze in morn and a cold wind from N and clouded up at 10 in morn and began to sleet at 2 in eve and lasted all eve and snowed through the night. Dud drove the mules to wagon and carried 12 young hogs which weighed 1425 lbs. and Willie rode Sandy to town and sold the hogs to Mount at 5 cts. per pd. and they returned at 2 3/4. I shucked corn and drew water and fed today. Willie and Dud brought the big sow with 12 pigs from pasture and put them in the old back stable late in eve.

Wed. 25th. It snowed last night and till 9 1/2 in morn and nearly covered everything (a big fall of snow) and sun shined balance of day after 10 but cold from W of N. We did nothing but get wood and feed.

Thu. 26th. Bright, nearly clear, and a hard freeze on top of the snow but calm and most of snow melted by night and cloudy all night. Willie and Dud cleaned up ground today. Willie and I walked in Elmwood pasture at 10 to 11 1/2 in morn and saw and salted all of our cattle. I shucked corn and got wood and water and fed in eve.

Fri. 27th. Cloudy and chilly some all day and began to rain slowly late in eve and lasted all night. Willie and Dud cleaned up ground in morn and broke ground in eve. I found a spotted sow with 9 live and 2 dead pigs in NW corner of calf pasture early in morn and hoed up some ground on N side of garden by 11 1/2. Leah washed here in eve.

Sat. 28th. It rained all last night and all today slowly most of time from W of N and chilly too and quit at 3 in eve and sun shined late in eve and clear all night. Willie and Dud threshed a few whip peas in morn and we did nothing else but get wood and feed.
