DECEMBER 1903

Tue. Dec. 1st. It rained slowly most of morn but only laid dust and bright but smoky all eve. Willie got some wood in morn and he and Howard picked cotton in 3rd Cane hollow most of eve and hauled all picked on yesterday and this eve with Joe and cart late in eve. I slept some in rocking chair through the day but had wheezing and very short breath and nervous tremors through the day and night too and slept but little and sat up in chair most of night.

Wed. 2nd. Bright but smoky and a white frost in morn and a cold breeze from N most of day but pleasant in sunshine. Willie and Hannah and 3 of Addie Lee's children picked cotton most of day. Howard sick and didn't work today. I got some wood and drew some water today. I slept a little through the day in chair and some too at night but couldn't lie down at night to sleep. I had wheezing and difficult breathing and nervous tremors through the day and night too and coughed up some phlegm on yesterday and last night.

Thu. 3rd. Clear but smoky some all day and a slight freeze and white frost in morn but calm and pleasant in sunshine after 10 in morn. Howard rode Joe to Ogden's store early in morn and he picked cotton in eve. Willie and Hannah and 3 of Addie Lee's children picked cotton most of day in Cherry cut and in new ground in back of our field and hauled all late in eve with Joe and cart. I suffered in day and most of night with wheezing and choking and nervous tremors and sat up in rocking chair all night and slept very little. I coughed up some phlegm through the day and night too.

Fri. 4th. Cloudy and quite cool early in morn and began to rain slowly at 10 in morn and lasted till late in eve. Willie and Howard and Hannah and Addie's 3 children picked cotton in new ground at back if our field all morn and came home nearly wet at 12 and didn't work in eve. Nellie and Minnie washed in morn. Gussie dined here and went back to Wiley's in eve. I suffered all day and night too with wheezing and difficult breathing and nervous tremors and slept but little at night in rocking chair. I coughed up good deal of phlegm through day and night too.

Sat. 5th. Cloudy and chilly from N all day and rained slowly early in morn awhile but quit at 10. Willie got wood early in morn and got nearly wet and he drove Joe to buggy to town in eve and returned at sunset. I took 2 doses of Hall's Catarrah cure today which seemed to stop up my throat and I suffered all eve and till midnight with hard breathing and wheezing but drank some coffee at midnight which relieved me good deal and I coughed up good deal of phlegm after midnight and slept some.

Sun. 6th. Bright and a freeze and white frost in morn and a cold breeze from N all day. Willie and Minnie walked to Sunday School in eve. Rena and her children here in eve awhile. I suffered today and at night too with wheezing and choking and nervous tremors and slept very little at night.

Mon. 7th. Clear and a very hard freeze and frost in morn but a calm day and pleasant in sunshine after 10 in morn. Howard and Hannah and Addie's 3 children picked cotton on hilltop of Luckett field and in new ground there part of today and finished last of our cotton in eve and Willie hauled it on wagon late in eve, Willie hauled 2 loads of wood here in morn and 2 to Lewis' in eve. Willie bought 2 Sorrel colts from Sims for $65 in morn. I coughed up good deal of phlegm today and at night too and slept very little at night and sat up in chair all night.

Tue. 8th. Cloudy and chilly and no sun today and began to rain in little showers from SW at 12 1/2 and lasted all eve and till in night. Willie and Howard began early in morn and hauled all of our Allen cotton to Ogden's gin in 3 loads with Ella and Jack to wagon and they got home at 4 in eve nearly wet. Wiley and Nellie drove Joe to town in morn and returned at 1. I walked about some in morn and my breathing seems better but I had wheezing and coughing most of day and night too and sat up in chair most of night and slept but little.

Wed. 9th. Clear and a frost in morn and pleasant in sunshine after 10 in morn. Willie and Howard hauled our 3 bales of short -S - cotton to Ogden's gin and brought home 2 loads of seed today and got home with last load at dark. I picked up some pecans today and cut up some wood and shucked good deal of corn and milked 2 cows late in eve and fed. I coughed up good deal of phlegm today and at night and had nervous tremors some and I lay down and slept some at night.

Thu. 10th. Clear and a freeze in morn and a cold breeze from W of N most of day. Willie and Howard hauled 3 loads of seed (and all) from Ogden's gin by 2 in eve and they hauled all of our cotton bales - 2 Allen and 3 short staple - home in 2 loads by sunset. I gathered over a peck of pecans today and got wood and water and milked and fed. I coughed up good deal of phlegm today and at night. I sat up in chair and slept a little but couldn't lie down for coughing all night.

Fri. 11th. Bright and a frost in morn but wind from S and pleasant in eve. Hannah washed today and Willie and Howard got wood early in morn. Sims had a birthday dinner today and Willie and Wiley dined with him. I gathered nearly a peck of pecans today and got some wood and water and milked and fed late in eve. I began in morn to take Hall's Catarrah cure. I coughed up good deal of phlegm today and at night too and slept some in chair most of night but couldn' lie down much.

Sat. 12th. Cloudy and damp early in morn and began to rain in little showers from SW early in morn and we had a big rain from NW at 11 1/2 to 12 1/2 with some wind and thunder and rain quit at 2 1/2 in eve. Willie and I got wood and water early in morn and we put all of our dry cattle into our field late in eve and put our milk cows and calves in pen at hayhouse. Nellie walked to Wiley's and back in eve. I rested pretty well at night and slept some.

Sun. 13th. Bright with a cold breeze from N all day but pleasant in sunshine. Wiley went to his Pa's in morn. I walked to Wiley's early in morn and Rena and her 2 children came back with me at 10 in morn and here till late in eve. None of us went to Sunday School but Willie in eve. I rested and slept pretty well at night.

Mon. 14th. Bright but cloudy some all day and a slight freeze in morn and chilly from N all day. Howard cut some trees out beyond road SE of here today and Willie rode Trilby to town in morn and returned in eve. I packed and cut up some wood and gathered about 1 peck of pecans today. Wiley and Ray hauled some cotton to Ogden's gin today. I didn't rest well at night.

Tue. 15th. Bright and cold from N. Willie and Howard cut some poles and some wood out beyond road SE of here in morn and they hauled a wagonload of poles to hog pen and some wood here in eve with Ella and Jack to wagon. Wiley finished hauling his 4 cotton bales from Ogden's gin in morn. Clara here awhile in morn and Carmel went home with her and Willie walked to Clara's in eve and brought Carmel home. Willie and I patched up hog pen in eve and tried to get our 2 big white barrows in pen but they wouldn't go in and Willie fed them in pen late in eve. I packed and cut up some wood and drew some water and picked up some pecans today. I rested pretty well at night. My bowells are running off - I think from Hall's Catarrah cure.

Wed. 16th. Bright and a frost and slight freeze in morn but calm and pleasant in sunshine after 10 in morn. Tigner D came with their wagon early in morn and he carried our 2 Allen bales and Howard carried our 3 bales of short staples with Ella and Jack to our wagon to town and Willie rode on Tigner's wagon and went and sold the cotton to Rothschild's at 13 1/2 cts. for long and 11 3/4 cts. for short and they returned late in eve. Nellie and Rena and her 2 children drove old Jim and went to Jack D's in morn and Wiley rode Goulden there in eve and they went to Whitehead and Carrie Morris' wedding at night. Tigner D and West slept at Wiley's at night. I rested pretty well at night.

Thu. 17th. Bright and cold early in morn but pleasant after 10 in morn. Howard drove wagon and Willie rode Trilby to town in morn and carried our 2 big white barrows (which weighed 520) and sold to Fosselman at 5 cts. gross and Willie got some provisions from Rothschild and they returned late in eve. Nellie and Rena and children and Wiley returned from wedding at 1 1/2 in eve. I got wood and water today and rested pretty well at night.

Fri. 18th. Cloudy and chilly early in morn and sprinkled rain some in morn and some in eve from S. Howard drove Ella and Jack to wagon and carried 4 bales of Wiley's cotton to town in morn and Wiley and Nellie drove Joe to buggy to town in morn to get Christmas and Wiley sold his cotton (long staple) to Rothschild for 13 cts. and they returned late in eve. Willie set up a new grindstone NW of kitchen today. I got wood and drew good deal of water today. I rested well most of night.

Sat. 19th. Cloudy and no sun and a damp breeze from S all day and sprinkled rain some in morn and some in eve and rained a good hard shower at 8 to 9 in night and wind changed to NW and cleared off. I got wood and water today and Willie and I ground our axes in morn. I started to Lewis' with 1/2 bu of pecans at 2 in eve but met up with Lewis out in road returning from town and gave the pecans to him. I rested pretty well at night.

Sun. 20th. Bright, nearly clear, and a cold wind from W of N most of day but pleasant in sunshine. Nellie and Bernice and Carmel walked to Dixie's in morn and returned late in eve. I walked to Wiley's at 9 to 10 in morn and packed Marion there and back. Willie and Minnie and Marion went to Sunday School in eve and I stayed home. I was cold some in night and didn't sleep well.

Mon. 21st. Bright, nearly clear, and a white frost and slight freeze in morn but a breeze from S and warmer in eve. Willie and Minnie and Carmel drove Joe to town in morn to get Christmas and returned at 2 1/2 in eve. Rena and little Wiley here most of day. Bernice went to school in morn and here late in eve. I got wood and water and gathered a few pecans today. I rested pretty well at night.

Tue. 22nd. Bright and some frost in morn but a pleasant day. Wiley and Rena and their 2 children drove Joe to town in morn to get Christmas and returned late in eve. Willie and Howard hauled 3 loads of wood here in morn and Howard took wagon to Surgett's and hauled some wood to Isabella in eve. I got wood and water and gathered 1 1/2 pecks of pecans today. I rested well at night.

Wed. 23rd. Bright and pleasant. Willie cleared land E of here today. Wiley drove Joe to buggy to his Pa's early in morn to get a pig for Christmas and returned late in eve. Nellie and Minnie cooked cakes and pies today. Rena and little Wiley and I walked to schoolhouse at 10 1/2 in morn to hear recitations of scholars and we had cakes and fruit and I got home at 1 and I got wood and water in eve and walked to Wiley's and back. I rested pretty well at night.

Thu. 24th. Bright and pleasant from SW with some dark clouds most of day and warm in eve and at night and rained a big one at 3 to 4 in night from NW with some wind and thunder. Willie cleared land E of fig orchard in morn and he and I got some cedar limbs for vases just after dinner and Willie rode to hunt cattle and Carmel and I walked to Wiley's at 2 and Bernice went with us and we got a little cedar beyond Wiley's and Rena and little Wiley came back with us and Nellie and Minnie and Rena dressed the tree in old back room late in eve for children and Bernice staid here all night. I got a big cartload of pine knots in Sims' corner and piled them up there in morn. None of us slept well at night on account of rain.

Fri. 25th. We had a hard rain at 3 to 4 in morn from NW and rained on some in little sprinkles from W of N most of morn and wind cold and cleared off in eve at 3. Wiley and Rena and baby came at daybreak to see Christmas tree and here all day and Buddy and Clara and Effie and Gordon here to dinner. We had an egg nog at 8 to 9 in morn. I rested well at night.

Sat. 26th. Clear and a little frost in morn and a cold W of N wind all day and not warm enough in sunshine all day. Willie put some more dirt on our 2 ricks of seed cane in old cow pen corner in morn and cut up some wood and hunted cattle in eve. I packed 2 turns of stove wood and cut it up by 10 in morn and Sims came then and Willie and I helped him to hunt (and find) one of his calves which had got in a hole but it had got out when we found it. Wiley and Tigner D went to Jack D's in morn early and returned late in eve. Nellie walked to Wiley's early in morn and helped Rena to clean up house. I rested well at night but got up cold at 3 in night.

Sun. 27th. Clear and a hard freeze in morn but calm and warmer in eve. Nellie and I and Carmell walked to Wiley's and back in morn. Sims came at 11 in morn and here till late in eve. None of us except Wiley and Bernice went to Sunday School in eve. I had a little dull pain in my head most of day but I slept and rested well all night.

Mon. 28th. Clear and a freeze and a white frost in morn but a little breeze from S and a pleasant day and warmer in eve. Willie and Minnie and their 2 children drove Joe to Mrs. James' in morn. I packed and cut up some wood and drew some water in morn and I sawed in two an old molasses bbl and made 2 tubs in eve and gave 1 to Wiley and I milked cows (3) and fed everything late in eve. Rena and her 2 children staid here at night. I rested and slept well at night.

Tue. 29th. Clear and frost in morn and a dry breeze from E of N but pleasant in sunshine after 10 in morn. Nellie and Rena and her 2 children walked to Clara's in morn and returned late in eve and Wiley went to town in morn and dined at Clara's too. Mr. A.E. Fugler came at 12 and dined here. Willie and Minnie and their 2 children returned at 12 1/4 from Mrs. James'. Willie went with Mr. Fugler to Clara's to see Sims and on back to Sims' and Fugler bought 1 horse and 2 mules from Sims late in eve. I got wood and water and gathered a few pecans in morn and I drew water and shucked corn and fed and milked some of cows late in eve.

Wed. 30th. Bright, nearly clear, and a freeze and white frost in morn but a calm and dry and pleasant day after 10 in morn. Willie a
