DECEMBER 1902

Fri. Dec. 5th. Clear and a white frost and killing freeze in morn (the first to kill vegetation) but pleasant in sunshine after 10 in morn. Willie and Henry and Ray and 3 women picked cotton in Luckett field most of day. I got wood and water and patched up stables in morn and I drove Joe to cart and carried dinner to Willie and Henry at 12 1/2 and picked cotton with them in eve. I arose at 11 1/2 but slept again at 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 but didn't sleep well all night.

Sat. 6th. Cloudy and foggy and wet and chilly and some frost and a damp chilly breeze from SE till 11 1/2 and clear and calm and pleasant all eve. I led Joe to cart to Luckett field and Henry went with me and brought 2 big baskets of cotton from Luckett field left there on yesterday. Willie drove Joe to town in morn and carried 10 gal of molasses to Mr.________ (at 45cts.) and returned at 3 in eve. Leroy D came to Wiley's in morn and here a little while in eve. Willie and I weighed some cotton in Luckett field late in eve which Rose and Net picked today. I slept till 2 in morn and some again at 3 1/2 to 5.

Sun. 7th. Cloudy some and quite cool in morn but bright and dark cloudy and calm and dropped rain some in eve. Nellie and Carmell and Rena and Bernice and little Wiley walked to Dixie's in morn and I packed Carmell to Ray's house and stopped at Lewis' a little while. Wiley went to his Pa's in morn. I drove Joe to buggy to Dixie's in eve and carried 1 peck of pecans and some peppers to her and 1 peck pecans to Seymour's too and Nellie and Rena and children came back in buggy and I walked in front all way. I began to take the bottle of Hall's Cattarrh cure which Willie got on yesterday in morn.

Mon. 8th. Cloudy and chill from N or E of N most of day but bright and sun shined part of eve. Willie and Henry and I and Ray and women picked cotton most of day in Luckett field on lower side. We picked in Sandy corner in branch and finished it late in eve. I brought cotton home at 12 and carried dinner to Willie and Henry and I walked home before sunset and got wood and water and I had a little fever all day and cold in my head and throat and had chilliness and hot fever and headache at night and slept very little.

Tue. 9th. Cloudy and chilly some all day but bright and sun shined some in morn and some in eve. Willie and Henry picked cotton in Luckett field most of day and I staid here in morn and got wood and water and I killed 2 young squirrels in NW of orchard and carried dinner on cart to Willie and Henry at 12 and picked cotton with them in eve. Minnie was complaining all day and Henry rode Joe to Dixie's at sunset and got Ellen Robinson and Minnie gave birth to a son at 7 3/4 at night.

Wed. 10th. Bright and pleasant from S. Willie fixed stove pipe in back room in morn and Henry and I picked cotton in Luckett field in morn and all 3 of us picked in new ground at back of our field in eve and finished last of our cotton and hauled it with Joe and cart. I have a severe cold in my head and throat and was feverish at night but slept well.

Thu. 11th. Cloudy and no sun and dropped rain some in morn and rained slowly at 12 to 3 1/4 in eve and quit then. Willie got up Ella and Goulden early in morn and Henry drove them to wagon and carried a load of cotton to Schaefer's gin and Willie rode Joe and sold bale to Schaefer and they got home after rain dry but the seed were wet some. I got wood and water in morn and staid in house in eve. I arose at 11 3/4 in night but slept again at 1 to 4.

Fri. 12th. Foggy or misty till 10 in morn and bright and warm and calm in eve. We loaded wagon early in morn and Henry drove Ella and Goulden and carried last of our cotton to Schaefer's gin and Willie rode Joe and they returned late in eve with seed. I got wood and water to wash in morn and Nellie and Aunt Margaret washed in eve and I fixed up clothesline and cut up wood and drew good deal of water in eve and got up cows late in eve. Clara and Effie here in eve awhile and Cousin Mary and Lila too and Miss Florida and Jimmie stopped here too.

Sat. 13th. Cloudy and calm and warm in morn and bright and cooler from N in eve. Willie and Wiley got up Goulden and Jack from field in morn and Wiley hauled in some of his cotton. Willie walked to Sims' at 9 1/2 to 11 and he drove Joe to buggy to town in eve. I cut up some wood and drew some water in morn and I went squirrel hunting out NW of orchard in eve but didn't see a single one. Jack D and wife and Rena and her 2 children and Viola and Tom Kaigler and wife here awhile in eve.

Sun. 14th. Cloudy and no sunshine and misted rain some in morn and sprinkled some again in early part of night from SE. Wiley here awhile in morn. Willie and I got wood in morn and Willie rode Joe to Clara's in eve and returned at dusk. I walked to Wiley's just after dinner and Jack D and wife and Viola left there just as I was going up the hill to the house and Sims' came there too hunting paregoric. Rena and baby and Bernice here awhile late in eve. Willie walked to Sims' after supper to see about him. He is sick from drinking. My cold and hoarseness is better today.

Mon. 15th. It began to rain in hard showers from S at daylight in morn and changed to NW at 8 1/2 and rained in very hard showers from there with some wind and thunder till 12 - a big fall of water in all and cloudy some all eve and cleared off in night. Willie and I got wood and Willie drove up 7 of our barrows and we put them in calf pasture and fixed up fence around it in eve. Rena and Bernice and baby here awhile in eve.

Tue. 16th. Clear and a slight freeze in morn and a cold N breeze all day but pleasant in sunshine after 10 in morn. I got 6 barrows in hog pen at daylight and we put 5 of them in wagon. Wiley helped us and Jack helped too and Henry drove Ella and Jack to town and Willie rode Joe and sold the hogs to John Fosselmann at 5 cts gross. They weighed 670. I got wood in morn and fixed up partition in hay house where mules broke it last night in eve. Rena and Bernice and baby here all day and Wiley dined here. Wiley sold 3 steers to Fosselmann for $20 in morn.

Wed. 17th. A freeze and white frost in morn but nearly clear and sun shined all day and pleasant after 10 in morn and calm. Henry hauled wood in morn with Ella and Jack from near Luckett field and Willie helped him in eve to haul. Willie and I walked to Sims' at 8 to 11 in morn and bargained to buy some land joining ours. I got wood and water in eve and walked in Sims' field SE of here and piled up some knotts. I had a dull headache most of day and night too. Ida and Thelma here most of day and Rena and her children too in eve.

Thu. 18th. Bright and cold and a very white frost and freeze in morn but pleasant in sunshine after 10 in morn. Willie rode Joe to Cohen's in morn but didn't see Charlie - he was in town - and Willie walked hunting in eve. Henry picked cotton for Sims today. I got wood and water for Aunt Margaret to wash and cut up some wood too in morn and I hauled a big cart load of pine knotts from Sims' field SE of here with Joe in eve. I arose at 11 in night with cough but slept again at 12 to 4 1/2. My cold and cough seems to be getting better.

Fri. 19th. Bright and a frost and freeze in morn but calm and pleasant in sunshine after 10 in morn. Willie helped Wiley to pick cotton today and Henry drove Ella and Jack to wagon to Clara's early in morn and helped to haul their cotton to Cohen's gin. He hauled 2 loads but left last one in wagon at gin. I cut up good deal of wood and fixed big gate at road. They had speeches and cake at schoolhouse in eve and Nellie and Rena and little Wiley went.

Sat. 20th. Cloudy and began to rain slowly at 9 in morn and lasted till 2 1/2 in eve and quit then and clear at night. Nellie and I and Bernice got ready to go to town early in morn but rain prevented. Rena and children and Wiley here most of day. Henry took mule to gin (Cohen's) early in morn and brought wagon home at 3 in eve. Bernice staid here all night. Carmell was sick with vomiting on yesterday eve and she had fever last night and vomited some today. I arose at 12 1/2 in night but slept again at 2 to 4.

Sun. 21st. Clear and cool from NW and a beautiful and pleasant day. Wiley went to his Pa's in morn and Rena and baby and Bernice here all day. Willie rode Joe to Clara's in morn and returned at

11 3/4 with our mail.

Mon. 22nd. Bright, nearly clear, and a little frost in morn and a cold breeze from W of N all day but pleasant in sunshine. Willie rode Dan to Cohen's in morn to see about buying land from Sims. Nellie and Bernice and Carmell and I drove Joe to town at 9 1/2 in morn to 3 1/2 in eve to get Christmas. Rena and little Wiley here all day and I helped her to carry baby home late in eve.

Tue. 23rd. Cloudy and chilly from N till 12 and bright and pleasant all eve. Wiley drove Ella and Jack to wagon and carried his cotton (about 900) and went by Clara's and got 400 more from Buddy and carried it to town but couldn't get it ginned and left it there in wagon and returned late in eve. Willie and I killed and dressed a sow shoat - Willie shot it in Sims' calf pasture and we finished it at 1 1/2 and ate dinner at 2 1/2. Rena and children here most of day. Aunt Margaret washed in eve. I packed and cut up some wood for Wiley late in eve. I slept till 2 in night last night without waking and I slept again at night till 2 3/4 without waking.

Wed. 24th. Bright, nearly clear, and a very white frost and freeze in morn but calm and pleasant in sunshine after 10 in morn. Wiley rode Jack and led Ella to town early in morn and got his cotton ginned and sold and returned late in eve with wagon. Willie rode Dan to town in morn and returned at dark. Aunt Margaret and Rena and Nellie cooked cakes here all day. I cut up good deal of wood and drew good deal of water today and I measured 10 gal of molasses and put in a keg for Anthony Banford at 11 to 11 3/4 in morn - he brought 1000 of cotton seed for molasses. I cut up some wood for Wiley late in eve and milked our cows. Bernice staid here all night.

Thu. 25th. Bright and a frost and very slight freeze in morn and a breeze from E of N but dry and pleasant in sunshine after 10 in morn. Wiley and Rena and baby came at sunrise and ate breakfast here and here all day and we had an eggnog early after breakfast. Buddy and Gordon dined here and Lewis and Cousin Mary and children here in eve. I carried baby home for Rena late in eve. I slept well at night till 3 and got up at 3 1/2.

Fri. 26th. Bright and a little freeze in morn and a cold breeze from N all day but dry and pleasant in sunshine after 10 in morn. Wiley and Rena and Bernice and little Wiley drove Joe to Jack D's in morn to stay till Sunday. Willie rode Dan to Cohen's in morn and dined at Clara's and returned late in eve and slept at Wiley's at night. I cut up good deal of wood and drew water in morn at 12 1/2 and I found some pine knotts in Sims' field SE of here and packed them out in eve and walked to Wiley's late in eve and fed his stock. I slept well at night and got up at 4 in morn.

Sat. 27th. Bright and a hard freeze and frost in morn and didn't all thaw in shade all day but a breeze from SE and warmer in eve. Willie rode Dan to Cohen's in morn and on to town and returned late in eve. I hauled a big cart load of pine knotts from Sims' field with Ella by 10 in morn and cut up wood and drew water till 12 and I rebuilt a partition in calf stable and old Guernseys at hay house in eve by putting 5 wires and nailing poles between and I fed Wiley's stock late in eve. Willie didn't sleep at Wiley's at night. He is sick with cold and Minnie and Carmell have it bad too. I have some cold with my old complaint and my head is stopped up today and at night and I did not sleep well at night.

Sun. 28th. Cloudy and no sun and a damp breeze from SE and dropped rain some in morn and rained most of night - a big fall of water. Wiley and Rena and children and Gussie and Viola came from Jack D's at 12 and all dined here and Clara and Effie and little Henderson here too most of day. Minnie and Willie and Carmell and the baby all sick with colds and I have it too but I slept well at night.

Mon. 29th. It rained most of last night and till 8 1/2 in morn -a big one - and bright and cold from N most of day. Willie and I cut up some wood in morn and I carried some pig meat to Wiley's at 10 1/2 to 11 1/2. Willie and I walked to Wiley's in eve and Rena and Bernice and Viola came back with me at 2 1/2 and I packed little Wiley and I carried him back late in eve. All of us are better of our colds. I slept well at night.

Tue. 30th. Bright but cloudy and a freeze in morn and a breeze from N all day and chilly too. Wiley drove Joe to buggy to town in morn and got some coal oil and a bottle of Hall's Catarrh cure for me and some things for himself. I cut up good deal of wood in morn and cut down the blighted pasture toward big road. Willie hired Howard early in morn and walked to Wiley's and got Goulden and he and I put Goulden and Ella to wagon just after dinner and went beyond our field to haul wood and they got frightened at a falling sapling and ran with wagon and turned it over and broke nothing but one hamestring and we only hauled 1 load of wood.

Wed. 31st. Bright and a slight freeze in morn and chilly from NE all day and dark cloudy late in eve and rained some most of night. Willie a
