AUGUST 1913

Fri. Aug. 1st. Bright and warm and no rain here but rained around E and NE of here late in eve with good deal of thunder. Lewis and Willie worked on the 2 new rooms all day and Wiley and Ben too in eve - they put up plank seats at SS in morn. I hoed in garden in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water and helped to milk in eve.

Sat. 2nd. Bright and warm and no rain here but thunder showers passed around some in eve. Willie and Lewis and Wiley covered the gallery of new rooms in morn by 11 and Willie drove Sandy to town in eve and brought Bro. Hopper back with him late in eve. I hoed pepper and late tomatoes in field and brought home a big turn of tomatoes and saved some seed by 11.

Sun. 3rd. Some clouds early in morn and rain here at 9 1/2 in morn enough to make a little mud and a thundercloud came up from NE at 2 in eve and we had a good hard soaking rain till 3 and bright balance of eve. Wiley's surrey carried all of his family and Bro Hopper and all of our folks from here (except me I rode Sandy) to SS in morn and Bro Hopper preached 2 sermons there and had dinner on ground. I rode Sandy home at 1 and shucked corn and got wood and water and helped to milk in eve. Bro Hopper here all night.

Mon. 4th. Bright, nearly clear, and no rain in sight today. All of us except Nellie and Charles and Carl went to SS in morn and Bro Hopper preached there in morn and again in eve. Willie and Bro Hopper went in our buggy (drove Sandy) and Ben brought Sandy and buggy back and Minnie and Marion and I went back in buggy and we came back home for dinner and Bro Hopper stopped and dined at Lewis'. All went back in eve but Minnie and Charles and Carl and me. Bro Hopper here all night again.

Tue. 5th. Bright and warm and no rain but lightning in SE at night. Bro Hopper and I went in our buggy and all the rest went in Wiley's surrey to schoolhouse in morn and had 2 sermons and dinner there. I came back in buggy at 1 in eve and the rest late in eve. Bro Hopper here again at night.

Wed. 6th. Bright and ____ till 2 in eve and a thundercloud passed around NW of here ____ NE and near but no rain _____ cloudy some all eve. Bro Hopper and Marion and I went in our buggy to schoolhouse in morn and rest went in Wiley's surrey and had 2 sermons and dinner there. I came home at 1 and balance late in eve.

Thu. 7th. Bright and warm till 2 in eve and cloudy balance of eve and rained around S and SE and SW of here most of eve but none here. Bro Hopper and Marion and I drove Sandy to schoolhouse in morn and the rest went in Wiley's surrey and had 2 sermons and dinner there and the meeting closed late in eve. I came home at 1 in eve and the rest late in eve and Bro Hopper here all night.

Fri. 8th. Cloudy all day and sprinkled rain a little (late in eve) from S and rained slowly most of eve and enough to make ground very muddy. Willie drove Sandy to buggy to town in morn and took Bro Hopper home. Ben barred off late Irish potatoes just E of hen shed and hauled our plank from schoolhouse in morn and scraped some of the potatoes in eve. I got a bucket of peaches at Ben's house early in morn and got some butter beans and okra for dinner and sowed some tomatoe seed.

Sat. 9th. Cloudy and warm and rained in slow showers at 9 to 12 in morn. Willie and Wiley worked on the 2 new rooms all morn. I walked in pasture early in morn and got Sandy and rode him to patch and brought home 4 watermelons and 2 buckets of tomatoes in 2 trips and Ben walked and brought 2 more melons by 9 and I rode back and got 1 bu of tomatoes and carried on Sandy to Mrs. Lanehart and returned at 12 1/4. I shucked corn in eve and thinned out some late tomatoes in garden too.

Sun. 10th. Bright and warm and no rain near. Nellie at Lewis' most of day - Lila is sick. I walked to Wiley's and back at 1 to 2 3/4 in eve. Willie and Minnie and children went to SS in eve.

Mon. 11th. Cloudy most of day and rained around in little showers some early in morn and a thundercloud came up from SE at 4 in eve but went around E of here and NE but only rained a slow shower here at 5 to 5 1/2. Willie and Lewis and Wiley worked on the new rooms most of day. Ben drove our mules and wagon and Dago drove Wiley's team to Lewis' wagon and brought some plank and brick from town by 4 in eve. Ben and I brought 8 watermelons and 2 buckets of tomatoes from patch early in morn.

Tue. 12th. Bright and warm till 3 1/2 in eve and a thundercloud passed around E of here from SE then ___ dropped a little here. Willie and Lewis ____ on the new rooms most of _____ 2 in eve. Wiley carried _____ load of watermelons to town early in morn and Ben drove our mules to our wagon too and they brought home 2 loads of brick by 1 in eve and Ben hauled 2 loads of sand from creek in eve. Gussie here in eve. I hoed pole beans and eggplant in garden in morn and picked some pole beans to cook and some dry ones too in eve.

Wed. 13th. Bright and warm in morn and a thundercloud came up from S at 1 in eve and we had a good little shower and bright most of eve and rained a hard sprinkle at dusk. Willie and Lewis and Wiley and Ben worked on the new rooms most of day. I hoed late tomatoes and bush beans in garden most of morn and got some butter beans and okra in eve. All except Nellie and I and Charles and Carl went to schoolhouse at dusk and had a prayer meeting (the first one there). Thu. 14th. Bright and warm most of day but rained around in thundershowers most of eve and sprinkled some here twice. Willie and Ben and Lewis worked on the new chimney most of day. Wiley carried a load of melons to town in morn. I got wood for Hannah to wash early in morn and picked grass out of strawberries and brought 1/2 bu of tomatoes out of patch and carried 1 peck to Rena by 11 in morn and I picked some pole beans and got some okra in eve.

Fri. 15th. Bright and warm all day and no rain in sight. Willie and Ben and Lewis worked on chimney and finished it late in eve. Wiley helped in eve - he carried a load of melons to town in morn. I picked grass out of strawberries in morn and picked some dry and green butter beans in eve.

Sat. 16th. Bright and warm all morn and a thunder cloud came up from NE at 1 1/2 in eve and we had a good soaking rain till 2 1/2 and slowly till 4 and quit. Willie and Lewis and Wiley and Ben worked on the new rooms all morn. Willie fixed to go to town in eve but the rain prevented. I picked grass out of strawberries in morn.

Sun. 17th. Bright and warm all day and no rain in sight. I brought 2 watermelons and 2 p'ks of tomatoes from field early in morn and carried one p'k to Wiley's by 11 1/2. Wiley and family came just after dinner and Willie and Minnie and Marion and Carl drove Sandy to SS in eve and Wiley and all of his family (except Rena) went in his Surry and Mattie J too.

Mon. 18th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Willie and Wiley worked ----- the new rooms today. Ben ----- whipped peas today. I brought ----of tomatoes from patch --- early in morn and Clarence ---- 3 p'ks to his Mama on ---- and Son and Buddy carried 2 p'ks to Rena and I went back to patch and got one more p'k and 2 more watermelons and brought them home on Sandy and I got some okra and snap beans in eve.

Tue. 19th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Willie drove Sandy to town in morn and Wiley carried a load of watermelons to town and they worked on the rooms in eve. I brought 13 p'ks of tomatoes from patch early in morn on Josie and went back and brought 2 watermelons and I gathered a big bucket of apple-haws by 10 1/2 and another in eve for jelly. Mattie J and Carmel and Marion walked to Dixie's in morn and Rubie came back with them late in eve.

Wed. 20th. Cloudy some all day but bright and warm and no rain near but thundered around some in eve. Willie and Wiley worked on the rooms today. Ben and Hannah picked whip peas on yesterday and today. Willie and Ben hauled in a load of watermelons late in eve to take to town on tomorrow. I brought in some tomatoes and watermelons from patch on Josie early in morn and got some okra and butter beans by 10 in morn. All went to prayer meeting at the schoolhouse at night but Nellie and Charles and Carl and me. Willie James came at dark.

Thu. 21st. Bright and very warm all day and no rain here but thundered around some in eve. Ben drove our mules to wagon and carried a load of our watermelons and 4 bu of Irish potatoes to town and Wiley rode on horseback to town and sold the melons and Ben returned at 1 and picked peas in eve. I picked grass out of strawberries in morn and shucked and shelled some bread corn in eve and got a basket of snap beans in garden.

Fri. 22nd. Bright and warm in morn and rained around in eve in thunder showers and we had a good hard shower at 4 1/2 - enough to make some mud. Willie and Wiley worked on new rooms today. Ben cultivated and plowed the late Irish potatoes in new ground E of hen shed today. I brought in some tomatoes and watermelons from patch on Josie early in morn and gathered a big bucket of apple haws and Marion and I carried the haws and some tomatoes to Wiley's at 11 in morn.

Sat. 23rd. Bright and warm all day and no rain near. Willie and Wiley worked on the new rooms in morn and Ben white washed and Wiley and Bernice and Willie and Carmel went to town in Surry in eve. ------- and 12 watermelons in 2 trips on Josie ---- in morn and made 2 boxes by 11 1/2 and set ---- them in stables in eve.

Sun. 24th. Bright, nearly clear, and ------ and cool wind from NE and no rain in sight. I brought in 4 watermelons and some tomatoes on Josie early in morn. All walked to SS in eve but Nellie and Charles and Carl and me.

Mon. 25th. Bright, nearly clear, and a little cool and dry from NE. Willie white washed on the new rooms today and Ben picked peas. I hoed most of garden in morn and got a sack of pine straw in eve and shucked corn and helped to milk.

Tue. 26th. Bright and dry from NE and no rain in sight. Willie painted doors and windows to the new rooms today and Ben picked peas. I brought in some watermelons and tomatoes on Josie early in morn and gathered 5 p'ks of late pears which Marion took on Josie to Mrs. Lanehart and I gathered 5 more p'ks and sent to Cousin Mary and I picked a big bucket of green butter beans and got some okra by 11 3/4 and I set 2 hens in a coop in eve. Minnie and baby and Rena drove Nancy to D Chambers in morn and returned late in eve.

Wed. 27th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain here but showered around some in eve. Willie painted doors and window in morn and put a brick flue over stove in kitchen in eve. Ben picked peas. I hoed up cucumber patch in Sims' bottoms and sowed mustard and turnip there in morn and hoed the late tomatoes there too and I shelled some bread corn in eve. All went to prayer meeting at night but Nellie and me and Charles and Carl and returned at 9.

Thu. 28th. Bright and warm and dry and showered around some in eve but only sprinkled a little here at 1 1/2 in eve. Willie finished flue to kitchen stove in morn and rode Josie to Ogden's at 12 to 2 to phone Dr. Magruder to come to Wiley's to see Buddy (he is right sick) and Dr. M stayed there last night and at night again. I brought in some tomatoes and watermelons on Josie early in morn and got wood and water for Hannah to wash and carried some milk and butter to Wiley's at 4 to 5 1/2 in eve.

Fri. 29th. Bright and warm most of day and rained around in thunder showers in eve but only sprinkled a little here at 2. -------Willie put some blocks under front room in morn and------- Wiley's in eve and again at dark and sat up all night with Buddy and Dr. Magruder there all day and night again. Buddy seemed to get a little better late in night. I got some okra and butter beans in morn and carried some eggs and pears and butter and milk to Wiley's in eve.

Sat. 30th. Bright and very warm all morn and rained around in thunder showers some in eve but only sprinkled a little here. Willie drove Josie to buggy to town in morn. Ben rode Sandy and Dago rode Ned (mule) to Ogden's mill early in morn and each carried 6 p'ks of corn from here and they returned with the meal just before 12. I walked to tomatoe patch and brought home 1/2 bu of tomatoes by 9 in morn and walked back and sold 4 watermelons there to Negroes and brought home one by 11 3/4. Willie slept all eve
