AUGUST 1903

Sat. Aug. 1st. Bright and warm from S till 3 1/2 in eve and a slow thundercloud came up at 4 from S but only dropped rain here a little. Howard drove Ella and Jack to wagon to town and Willie rode Joe in morn and returned at 1. I washed out our well in morn and Bernice and Carmell and I walked to my watermelon and tomatoe patches in Sims' corner and brought home 1/2 bu of tomatoes and ate a watermelon there and I walked back there and packed home 2 watermelons by 11 1/4 and sold them to Jack in eve for 30 cts. Gordon here in eve and Rena and children and Nellie and Carmell went home with them late in eve and stayed all night.

Sun. 2nd. Bright and warm from SE till 3 in eve and rained around some in little thundershowers from SE at 3 to 5 but only dropped a little here. Wiley went to his Pa's in morn and Nellie and Carmell and Rena and her 2 children came from Wiley's at 9 1/4 and here most of day. I gathered some butter and bush beans early in morn. Lewis and Ernest here awhile in morn and Leggett and West and Chunk too. Willie and I walked to Willie's watermelon patch at 9 1/2 to 10 1/2 in morn and ate 1 and brought 2 home. We got ready to go to Sunday School in eve but the threatening clouds prevented us.

Mon. 3rd. Bright and warm from SE till 1 and a thundercloud came up from there at 1 1/2 and we had a big rain at 1 3/4 to 2 1/2 and slowly till 4. Willie and Howard hoed cotton in Sims' corner in morn and didn't work in eve on account of rain. I hoed cotton on hilltop of H ridge most of morn. Willie took old spring body off baby buggy and put a box body on it at 11 in morn to 3 in eve. Sims here at 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 in eve and got some beans and tomatoes.

Tue. 4th. Cloudy and warm and wet in morn and rained a slow shower at 10 to 11 1/2 and again slowly at 1 1/4 to 3 1/2 and bright late in eve. Nellie and I drove Joe to town in morn and Sims went too and we had the 90 acres of land bought from him assessed to us. We got home at 1. Willie and Howard hoed cotton in Sims' corner in morn. Jim Johnson and Madison F came at 1 in eve and Willie and Wiley sold some cattle to them late in eve after rain and they took them away (up the creek). I walked to Wiley's at 3 3/4 to 5 in eve and carried a few tomatoes and apples and pears and I got some butter beans and okra late in eve. Bernice here at night.

Wed. 5th. Cloudy and wet till 9 in morn and warm till 1 1/2 and a thundercloud came up then but only dropped rain here at 1 3/4 to 4 1/2. Willie and Howard hoed cotton most of day - in Sims' corner in morn and in Gate cut in eve - and I hoed cotton in morn on hilltop of H ridge and I hoed there about 1 1/2 hours in eve at 3 to 4 1/2 and I got nearly wet. I worked 2 places in big road there and Bernice and I went to my tomatoe patch in Sims' corner late in eve and got 1/2 bu (or more) and I gave 1 peck to Rena.

Thu. 6th. Bright and warm from NW till late in eve and a thundercloud came up from NE at sunset and we had a hard shower till 7 1/2 and another one came up at 3 1/2 in night and we had another hard one. Willie and I drove Joe to Turnbull's in morn and Wiley went in buggy with Lewis and we voted for state and county officers. We got home at 1. Howard hoed cotton today and Willie hoed with him in eve and I hoed on H ridge.

Fri. 7th. It rained at 3 1/2 to 8 in morn from N - a big fall of water - and bright and warm till late in eve and a thundershower came up from N at 6 1/2 but only sprinkled here and bright all night. Willie cleaned out cotton house and put some cotton seed hulls in stables in morn and I sewed on a new pair of pants making them shorter and sewing on buttons strong and took up manure and packed some old rails from roadside to cow pen and put on manure pen in morn. Nellie and Minnie washed in eve and I got wood for them and packed and cut up some and nursed baby some. Gordon here in eve and he and Willie and I walked to my watermelon and tomato patches in Sims' corner and brought home 2 watermelons and 1 1/2 pecks of tomatoes.

Sat. 8th. Bright and warm most of day from N. It showered around NW and W of here early in morn but only sprinkled a little here then and a thundercloud passed around NW and W of here at 5 1/2 in eve but none here. Willie rode Dan and Wiley Goulden to Mrs. James' in morn and Wiley bought a brown cow and red bull calf from her and they returned at 11 at night with cow and calf. Nellie sent some sewing to Miss Supple by Howard in morn. Our hogs broke into our old garden early in morn and I patched up the old pickets some and I hoed the 3 red fig trees on W side of barn and brought in a sack of yellow boat corn in morn. I walked in cow pasture at 2 in eve with Howard and caught Joe and Howard rode him to Ogden's store. I got some butter beans and okra and cut up some wood and milked cows (3) in eve. Rena and her 2 children here all day and Nellie and Carmell went home with them late in eve and stayed all night.

Sun. 9th. Bright and warm and no rain here but thundered in clouds in sight late in eve and in night. I walked to Wiley's early in morn and Nellie and Bernice and Carmell came back with me and they went to Lewis'. They started to Dixie's in buggy with Willie but Dixie and children and Miss Cook went to Clara's. I walked back to Wiley's at 9 to 10 and carried some salts to him. He took Calomel last night and I packed and cut up some wood for him. Willie and Minnie and I went to Sunday School in eve.

Mon. 10th. Bright and warm most of day and no rain here but thundershowers passed around from SW - one at 9 in morn and one at 2 and one at sunset. Howard hoed cotton in Sims' corner today and Willie plowed cotton with mule in Pine corner and in new ground at back of our field. I drove Joe to buggy to town in morn and carried about 3 pecks of pears to Dr. Hunnicutt and I got 1 1/2 bu of meal for Wiley and 1 for us and some other things at M and C's and returned at 12 3/4 and I got wood and gathered some cucumbers in garden and rode Joe in Sims' corner and brought in 2 watermelons and about 1 1/2 pecks of tomatoes and brought in a sack of boat corn and milked cows (3) in eve. Bernice here last night and today and had fever today and Wiley and Rena here in eve and carried her home late in eve on Goulden. Willie went to Wiley's late in eve and helped him to sew up 1 teat of his new cow which was split open by wire and they put a piece of sticking plaster (which I got in morn) on teat.

Tue. 11th. Cloudy and warm and rained in little showers around some in morn and we had a good one at 11 1/2 to 12 and bright in eve. Howard hoed cotton in Sims' corner today and Willie too in eve. Willie plowed cotton in morn on hilltop of Luckett field with mule and finished last of our cotton. I walked to Wiley's early in morn and drove Joe to town at 9 to 12 and got a bottle of Quinnine syrup for Bernice and 15 lbs of ice and 8 of lard for Wiley and Willie carried them to Wiley's at 1 to 2. I got wood and water and corn and a sack of pine straw and made some hens' nests in eve.

Wed. 12th. Bright and warm from W till 1 1/2 and a thundercloud came up at 2 from NW and we had a good hard shower at 2 1/2 to 4 and another little one at 5 1/2 to 6. Willie and Howard hoed cotton in morn and I hauled 3 cartloads of wood from NW of Wileys' with Joe by 11. We didn't work in eve. Wiley rode Goulden to town in morn and Jack D and wife came to Wiley's at 12. Nellie at Wiley's all morn. I carried a little bucket of figs and one of pears to Wiley's at 4 to 5 1/2 in eve.

Thu. 13th. Bright and warm all day from NW and we had a little shower from NW just after dark. Willie and Howard and I marked 2 red heifers early in morn and put muzzles on them to wean them and Willie and Howard hoed cotton all morn and finished all and I hoed around some peach trees in hollow in orchard and got some okra and beans and tomatoes. Willie drove Joe to town in eve and took Minnie and baby and returned at dark. Howard didn't work in eve. I carried some tomatoes and a few figs to Wiley's at 3 to 4 in eve and Carmell went with me and Bernice came back with us and I gathered some pears and put in pit to ripen. Dan and Gordon here awhile in eve. I milked cows (3) late in eve.

Fri. 14th. Bright and quite warm and no rain here today but showered around some in eve. Willie rode around our fields and to Clara's and back in morn and Howard cut down briars out E of fig orchard in morn and he plowed cotton for Wiley with Jack on branch in Luckett field in eve and Wiley and Tigner D plowed there too. I hoed around some peach trees in hollow in orchard till 10 in morn and got some wood and water and corn in eve. Dan here in eve awhile.

Sat. 15th. Bright and quite warm from NW and no rain but thundered far off most of day. Howard helped Wiley and Tigner D to plow cotton for Wiley on branch in Luckett field in morn and they finished last of it. Willie put some props around manure pen in cow pen and rode Joe in cow pasture and drove Sims' bull out in morn. I hoed around some peach trees in hollow in orchard till 10 1/2 in morn and got wood and water and corn in eve. Willie and Gordon and I cut and packed 2 gum poles from old road for chicken roost.

Sun. 16th. Bright and quite warm and no rain but thundered and rained around in sight from N late in eve. I walked to Wiley's early in morn and Bernice came back with me and Wiley and Rena and baby came on afterwards and here till late in eve. Willie and Minnie and Carmell drove Joe to chapel in morn and carried dinner but they didn't have dinner there and returned at 2 1/2 and all of us went to Sunday School in eve. Cousin Nannie at Lewis' and has been there for several days and her little girl "Mamie" with her.

Mon. 17th. Bright and warm and till late in eve and cloudy and sultry then but no rain today. Willie and Howard worked on wire fence on NE side of cowpasture - moving it out on gully all day and Wiley helped them some. I hoed around some peach trees in hollow in orchard in morn and finished them by 9 1/2 and I picked some dry butter and pole bean seed by 10 1/4. Nellie and Bernice and Carmell at Lewis' all day. I got wood and boat corn in eve and got about 3 pecks of tomatoes in Sims' corner and sold 6 watermelons to Jim Davis at 10 cts apiece at 4 to 5 in eve.

Tue. 18th. Foggy early in morn and rained in slow sprinkles at 8 to 10 from NW and warm and bright some but cloudy all eve and thundered far off all eve. Willie and Howard worked on cowpasture fence on NE side moving it out on gully and taking down old fence and Wiley helped them and he dined here. Rena and her 2 children and Minnie and baby spent day at Lewis'. I hoed over most of garden today preparing for turnips and finished it at 3 1/4 in eve and I set 2 stakes in cowpen to hitch calves to and got wood and water and packed little Wiley home for Rena late in eve.

Wed. 19th. Cloudy some all day but bright and warm and rained around in little showers at 12 to 3 from N but none here. Willie and Howard and Wiley took down wire fence and posts on NE side of cowpasture part of morn and finished it and Willie and I laid off some post holes E of hayhouse on roadside and Howard dug some of holes in eve. Willie and I walked down on branch in cowpasture to find a place to cross branch with cart to haul posts (on tomorrow) late in eve and Bernice went with us and came home with us and staid all night. I set 1 calf post in cowpen and cut some weeds and briars and put in washes in road between yard and cowpen and packed 2 turns of old rails from roadside and put on manure pen in cowpen in morn.

Thu. 20th. Bright and a cool and dry breeze from N and no rain in sight today and lightened in E and S at night. Howard dug post holes E of hayhouse on roadside all day and Willie and I dug down back there to make a road early in morn and we hauled old posts and wire in NE corner of cowpasture to branch with Joe to cart by 10 1/2 in morn and finished it. Cousins Nannie and little daughter Mamie and Mary and Ernest here most of day. I got wood and boat corn and a sack of tomatoes (about 3 pecks) from Sims' corner in eve. I had a rattling and wheezing and choking at 9 1/4 to 10 1/4 at night but slept well at 10 1/2 to 3 1/2.

Fri. 21st. Bright and warm in morn and cloudy and rained around in thundershowers in eve and we had a hard sprinkle here at 4 from E. I planted 8 rows of turnips in garden early in morn and sold 1/2 bu of tomatoes to Dago for 40 cts and took pay in sugar. Willie and Howard hauled the old wire posts and wire from NE part of cowpasture (with Ella and Jack to wagon) and put them on roadside E of hayhouse in morn and they set some of posts in eve. Wiley and Nellie and Bernice drove Joe to town in eve and Ray drove wagon to town for Wiley in eve. Minnie and Rose washed in eve and I nursed baby some and got corn and wood and water.

Sat. 22nd. Bright and warm all day from E and dry and no rain here but rained around some far off in eve. Willie and Howard put up some wire fence E of hayhouse on roadside in morn and Wiley hauled some timber from back of our field to his house in morn to build a cotton house. I moved woodpile and all of old chips in morn by 9 1/2 and got some vegetables and boat corn by 11. Joe Miller and family came to Lewis' on yesterday morn and Joe dined here today and Joe and Sally and their 4 children and West and Chunk and Wiley and family all came late in eve and we had ice cream and got through at 10 at night and Sally and 3 of her children stayed here all night and Bernice staid too. I had wheezing and choking at 10 to 12 at night but slept well at 12 1/4 to 4 1/2. Willie drove Joe to town in eve and got ice.

Sun. 23rd. Bright and warm and dry from S of E but rained around some in eve and sprinkled a little here. Joe came early in morn and got Sally and children and they went home. I walked to Wiley's early in morn and Bernice went with me and she and Nellie walked to Dixie's. Wiley and Tigner D went to Jack D's in morn and Rena and little Wiley came back with me at 9 in morn. Willie and I walked to Sunday School in eve and Minnie and Rena and their 2 babies and Carmell drove Joe to buggy and went too and Willie and Carmell went on after Sunday School and brought Nellie and Bernice home from Dixie's. I had wheezing and rattling most of night and didn't sleep well.

Mon. 24th. Bright and warm all morn and a thundercloud came up from S at 12 1/2 and we had a good soaking rain at 12 3/4 to 3 in eve and much needed. Willie and Howard worked on wire fence E of hayhouse all morn and didn't work in eve on account of rain. I walked to my tomatoe patch in Sims' corner and Wiley went with me and I got the 2 old axes near there for Wiley and got about 1 1/2 pecks of tomatoes and I hoed some in garden and picked some dry butter beans and got a sack of boat corn on H ridge (the first gathered there). Cousin Gus and wife and their 2 children came at 10 in morn and here till 5 in eve. I had wheezing and rattling and choking at 10 to 1 at night and made and drank some coffee at 1 1/4 and relieved me some and I slept some at 2 to 4 1/2.

Tue. 25th. Bright and warm till 1 in eve and rained around in thundershowers from S at 1 to 3 but none here and cloudy all eve. Willie helped Wiley to cut some red oak board cuts in Sims' corner most of day and Howard worked on wire fence E of hayhouse today. I carried a young Dominique rooster to Rena early in morn and Carmell went with me and Bernice came back with us and here till late in eve. I gathered some okra and beans and brought in a sack of boat corn from H ridge in morn and I got wood and water and walked to my tomatoe patch in Sims' corner late in eve and got about 1 peck of ripe ones. Buddy here in eve awhile.

Wed. 26th. Bright and warm all day and no rain in sight today. Howard worked on wire fence today and Willie too in eve. Willie helped Wiley saw board timber in morn. I worked road some on H ridge and hoed around 6 fig trees near barn in morn and I shelled some pole and butter bean seed and got wood and water in eve. I suffered with wheezing and choking till 2 in morn and drank some coffee then which relieved me.

Thu. 27th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight today. Willie and Howard worked on wire fence E of hayhouse in morn and Howard didn't work in eve. I worked road some on H ridge and cut up some wood and got some vegetables and a sack of boat corn in morn. Willie and I drove Joe to Turnbull's to 2nd Primary meeting (or election) in eve and returned just before sunset. I suffered with wheezing and coughing and choking till 10 at night and made and drank coffee and relieved me and I slept from 11 to 3 1/4.

Fri. 28th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain but some dark clouds and quite sultry in eve. Howard and Ray helped Lewis and West to work road through our fields today. I planted some turnips in garden by 9 1/2 in morn and brought in a sack of white boat corn from H ridge by 10. Willie drove Joe to town in morn and returned at 1 and brought some ice and we had ice cream at 2 to 4 1/4 in eve and Wiley and family and Gordon and Ray and Rose and Howard. I suffered till 10 at night with wheezing and choking and made and drank some coffee then and rested till 2 1/2 and got up again at 3 3/4.

Sat. 29th. Bright and warm most of day but rained around some in thundershowers from NW at 12 to 3 in eve but only dropped here. Willie and Howard worked on wire fence E of here (in woods) in morn and I hoed up some of garden and brought in 1 1/2 pecks of tomatoes and some boat corn in morn. Wiley hauled timbers for his cotton house and some wood too in morn. I got wood and water in eve and picked some butter beans for hogs in eve. I suffered at 9 1/2 to 11 with wheezing and choking but drank coffee at 10 1/4 and slept at 11 to 4.

Sun. 30th. Bright and warm with a dry breeze from N and thundered and lightened in N and NE all last night and some today but rain didn't get here and nearly clear and cooler late in eve and at night. Willie and Minnie and Carmell drove Joe to Camp Meeting in morn (starting at 7 1/2) and they returned after dark. Wiley and Rena and their 2 children here today. Gordon here awhile in morn and again in eve. None of us went to Sunday School. I got wood and water and milked (3 cows) late in eve. I made and drank coffee at 10 1/4 at night and coughed up some phlegm then and slept some at 11 1/2 to 3.

Mon. 31st. Cloudy and cool early in morn and dropped rain some then and bright and dry and pleasant from N after 8 in morn. Willie and Howard worked on wire fence E of here (in woods) today. Nellie and I walked to Wiley's just after breakfast - he had fever on yesterday eve
