AUGUST 1897

Sun. Aug. 1st. Bright, nearly clear, and cool early in morn but warm after 10 in morn and too dry. I rode Hattie into cow pasture and salted cattle and rode over Coon field early in morn. Willie rode Joe to Percy's creek to "Children's Day" in morn and returned at 9 1/2 at night. I milked our cows (3) late in eve after sunset. B C here at 3 to 7 1/2. Cousin Tom came from Lewis' after sunset and stayed here all night. Our chester boar was litle sick all yesterday and lay under house all today and didn't eat.

Mon. 2nd. Clear most of morn and warmer but thundered and showered around not very far off most of eve but none here and very sultry all eve. Pa and I hoed cotton in old Cane hollow till 9 1/2 in morn and Pa hoed there awhile in eve late, Nellie and Rena drove Rachael to Dixie's buggy and Wiley drove a little mule to his buggy and got here at 9 1/4 in morn. Wiley and Willie worked in Estina woods balance of day sawing and riving boards. I rode Hattie and carried their dinner at 12 1/4 to 2. Dixie went home with Rena in eve. They started with old Rachael to Dixie's buggy but she balked just beyond Sims' and they came back and drove Hattie and left old Rachael and mule here all night. I rode Rachael to Sims' at 2 1/2 to 3 but she refused horse.

Tue. 3rd. Bright and quite warm and dry from NE all day and thundered far off in eve but no rain near here. Wiley and Willie worked in Estina woods all day sawing and riving boards. Pa and I hoed cotton in old Cane hollow till 9 1/2 in morn and Pa hoed there awhile late in eve. I carried dinner to boys at 12 to 2 and lay on gallery with headache till 4 and it got a little better but lasted all night. I arose with it and took 3 pills in morn which worked me pretty well in eve.

Wed. 4th. Bright and very warm and dry all morn and thundered and showered around all eve near but only dropped rain here. Wiley and Willie rived boards all day in Estina woods and I carried dinner to them at 12 1/4 to 2 1/4. Pa and I hoed cotton in old Cane hollow awhile in morn. The headache didn't leave me till after dinner. Lewis and Gore here in eve and we walked in cow pasture and Lewis sold old Strawberry to Gore. Pa and I trimmed and sawed limbs off 1 pecan tree on W side of yard in eve.

Thu. 5th. Bright and warm and dry but thundered around some far off in eve but no rain near here. Pa went with Wiley and Willie to Estina woods early in morn and they rived and stacked boards all morn and Pa came home at 12 and I carried dinner to boys at 12 to 2 and they finished boards at 4 1/2 in eve (got home then). I looked for Lewis and Gore most of morn to come and get old Strawberry but they didn't. I put up a little table for horse tub at well to keep dogs out of it and fixed front gate (it had sagged) in morn and we didn't work in eve it was so warm.

Fri. 6th. Bright and quite warm and dry but thundered and showered some in eve and at night far off but none here. Wiley and Willie walked up the creek to hunt 2 of old Blue's pups, a white and a red one, they followed their mother off on Wed. eve last and they heard of them at Bellview and Willie went there in Wiley's buggy and brought them home. Pa and I hoed awhile in old Cane hollow in morn and didn't work in eve. Dixie and Rena and Leroy came in morn from Pinson place and Leroy went home at 4 in eve and Wiley and Rena went to Pinson's at 5 3/4 in eve.

Sat. 7th. Bright and warm and very dry from W and no signs of rain. Willie rode Joe to Camp meeting in morn and came back and stayed all night at Pinson's. Wiley and Rena came at 9 1/4 in morn and Wiley went to his Pa's late in eve and Rena stayed here. Pa and I hoed cotton till 9 in morn in old Cane hollow. Pa walked to Clara's in eve. He and I are both taking colds - they began last night. I packed and cut up some wood and got some corn in eve. Nellie and Dixie and Rena cooked some in eve for Camp meeting on tomorrow.

Sun. 8th. Bright and warm and dry from W but thundered and showered around some in eve and sprinkled here at 2 to 3. B C and Dixie drove Miller to her buggy to Camp meeting in morn and they returned at 9 at night and Willie came home later. He stopped at Pinson place for supper. Wiley came from his Pa's late in eve and he and Rena drove Rachael to our old buggy and went home. They carried the 2 pups. Pa and I are both nearly sick with colds.

Mon. 9th. Bright and warm and very dry from W and no rain but thundered far off all eve. Pa hoed cotton in old Cane hollow awhile in morn and again in eve and finished. Willie and I rode Hattie and Joe up the creek and tried to drive the bull (which Willie got from Lewis) back into our cow pasture but we couldn't in morn. I gathered some corn and cut up some wood and put 2 of Dixie's buggy wheels in branch and swelled them.

Tue. 10th. Bright and warm and dry from W all day till in eve and clouded up just before sunset and rained some little here at dusk and rained a hard shower just on this side of Cohen's then and caught Nellie and me on our way home from Camp meeting. We drove Hattie there in morn and got home at 9 in night. Pa picked some cotton (the first) today on H ridge. Jack came early in morn and cut down trees in cow pasture next to creek all day.

Wed. 11th. Cloudy and rained a slow shower just at daylight from NW and thundered and rained around most of day and we had another slow rain from NW late in eve but altogether it didn't wet ground thoroughly for it was very dry. Pa and I packed some poplar rails to cow pen from NW of there and I put them around manure pens by 9 1/2 in morn. Pa picked some cotton on H ridge in eve and I packed and cut up some wood and cleaned out stable in eve after I finished making a lowell's saddle pad for Willie.

Thu. 12th. Bright, nearly clear, and cooler from N and no signs of rain. Willie rode Joe to camp meeting in morn and went to Wiley's at night. Jack cut down trees in cow pasture by creek most of day. Pa picked cotton on H ridge awhile in morn and finished there first time and he picked in Cherry awhile in eve. I went over all of cotton on hilltop of Coon field with hoe cutting out weeds by 9 1/2 in morn and I packed and cut up wood and fixed up a manure pen in center of cow pen in eve.

Fri. 13th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool early in morn but warm in eve. Pa picked cotton awhile in morn and awhile in eve in Cherry cut. I cleaned out our cotton house and under it too, to put Pa's cotton in and I cleaned out our new barn to put mine and Willie's cotton in by 9 1/2 in morn and I cut and packed green corn stalks for hogs from Persimmon cut by 10 1/4. I drove Hattie to Dixie's buggy to Cohen's in eve. Willie returned from Camp meeting at 9 at night.

Sat. 14th. Bright and warm from S of W and some dark spots of clouds in eve. Pa picked cotton awhile in Cherry cut. Willie and I took cart and Hattie to Coon field early in morn and brought home 15 white oak wire posts to patch fence toward cow pen and I took cart to field and hauled a load of corn stalks from Persimmon cut for hogs and calves by 10 in morn. I packed and cut up some wood and packed 3 sks of corn from field and swelled 2 buggy wheels in branch in eve. Willie rode Joe to Wiley's late in eve to go to Camp meeting tomorrow and Effie came back with Pa from Clara's late in eve to go with Nellie and me.

Sun. 15th. Bright and warm and dry most of day and cloudy late in eve and at night and lightened around at night. Nellie and Effie and I drove Hattie to Dixie's buggy to Camp meeting early in morn and Willie went there too from Pinson place. We got home at 9 at night and Willie got home later in night. Pa and Dixie home all day and B C here in eve till 9 1/4 at night. The Camp meeting closed at night.

Mon. 16th. Cloudy and warm and sun shined very little today and thunder showers passed around after 10 in morn and rained a little slow shower here at 11 1/2 to 12 and another late in eve but not enough to run. Willie helped Buddy to saw off board cuts in Sims' field most of day and Pa picked cotton most of day in water hole cut and I picked in morn and at 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 in eve in orchard. I cut up wood at 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 and I packed in corn at 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 to feed on.

Tue. 17th. Cloudy and began to rain slowly at 7 in morn from SW and got harder at 8 to 10 and quit at 12 1/2 and we had a good rain in all and began again at dark and lasted all night slowly and without wind or thunder. Willie and I took Hattie and cart to Coon field early in morn to pick cotton but rain stopped us just as we began. I patched up an old cotton sack at 11 to 2 and got wood and corn in eve. Willie rode Hattie in cow pasture in eve and sold Cherry's brown cow and Strawberry's white back heifer to Gore for $24.

Wed. 18th. It rained all last night, a soaking one, and quit just after daylight and cloudy all day and began to rain again from NW at 10 in morn, a hard one, and lasted till 12 1/2 then quit till 3 and rained on from then till in night a great fall of water in all. Willie and I went in cow pasture early in morn to meet Gore and help him get his cows out of there but he and B C came at 11 1/2 (in rain) and Willie and I went in pasture with them (in rain) but creek was up and they didn't get cattle today. Pa, Willie and I patched up about 1/2 of wire fence from yard to cow pen putting in new white oak posts and refixing rails at bottom. We worked on it at 8 to 10 and again in eve at 1 to 2 3/4 and rain stopped us.

Thu. 19th. Cloudy and no sun all day and began to rain slowly just before day and lasted all day without ceasing till just before sunset and quit then but rained some through the night. B C and Gore came early in morn and Willie rode Joe and I rode Hattie and helped them to drive the 4 cows out of our cow pasture, down the creek, to Estina. Willie went on and helped to drive to Sligo road and Lewis and I fixed up gap where we put cattle out and came home nearly wet. Willie got home wet at 11 1/4. I cut up wood and got some corn by front gate in rain in eve.

Fri. 20th. Cloudy and wet and began to rain at 9 in morn and lasted till 11 - a slow rain and quit then and cloudy all eve but sun shined out late in eve. Pa, Willie and I worked on fence from yard to cow pen till 9 in morn and again in eve till 3 and we finished it and we patched orchard fence (wire) on N side at corner by 4 and I packed in some corn and cut up wood late in eve.

Sat. 21st. Cloudy and ground very wet and rained in slow showers at 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 in morn and again at 1 to 2 and again late in eve. Willie rode Dan to Cohen's and Lewis rode Bonnie early in morn and Willie bought Dan from Lewis for $40. He paid $25 in cash and owes $15. They came by Clara's (dined there) and Willie got home at 3. I plowed big road in our field with Hattie and Pa worked there with hoe and we finished at 10 1/2 in morn. I packed and cut up wood (Pa packed some too) in eve and I packed in some corn. Wiley and Rena and Miss Adah Kendrick came at 6 in eve on Wiley's buggy and our old buggy and Wiley stayed here all night and Breland came after sunset and stayed here all night.

Sun 22nd. Cloudy some but sun shined most of day and wind from N and no rain today and ground dried good deal. Bro. Breland went early to Union church and B C and Dixie drove Miller and Willie rode Dan and went too and they returned at 2 1/2 in eve. Wiley went home in morn but returned at 1 and he and Miss Adah Kendrick went home late in eve on our old buggy and left his here and Rena is to stay here a few days. All of us but Wiley and Rena walked to schoolhouse in eve and had our first Sunday School there.

Mon. 23rd. Bright, some clouds but sun shined most of day and a gentle breeze from N and dried up ground good deal. Nellie and Rena walked to Clara's in morn and there all day. Willie belted trees in cow pasture on ditch by creek in morn and Pa and I hoed over all of garden (first time) for turnips by 9 3/4 in morn and I packed in 2 sks of corn from cut by front gate on E side by 10 3/4. Pa picked some cotton in orchard in eve. Willie rode Joe and I rode Hattie to Estina in eve and B C helped us to drive our bull (the one which Willie got from Lewis) up the creek and into our pasture by late in eve.

Tue. 24th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool early in morn but warm after 10 in morn. Willie belted trees in cow pasture near creek most of morn. I put a new post to garden gate and killed 2 squirrels (cutting beech most) by 8 1/4 in morn and Pa and I picked cotton on H ridge at 8 1/2 to 11 in morn and Pa, Willie and I picked cotton most of eve in orchard.

Wed. 25th. Bright but some spots of clouds and warm after 10 in morn. Nellie and Rena drove Hattie to Ed Ogden's in morn and returned at sunset. I hammered and filed the face of my hatchet early (Willie battered it beating out hoes) and Pa, Willie and I picked cotton on H ridge at 8 1/4 to 11 in morn and we picked in orchard most of eve.

Thu. 26th. Bright and warm and calm and some clouds in eve. Willie rode Dan and I Hattie to Clara's in morn and Pa walked there at 8 1/2 in morn and Lewis and Seymour and B C there too and we put up a gallery to front of house and a shed to back of it and covered more than 1/2 of shed by late in eve. Pa and I came home before sunset and Willie came home at 9 3/4 at night. Tigner and Mary came to Clara's yesterday and Tigner left in morn and Mary is to stay a week.

Fri. 27th. Bright and warm till 3 in eve and cloudy balance of eve and thundered and showered around at 3 to 7 in eve not far off but none here. Willie rode Dan and Pa walked to Clara's in morn and there all day and helped Buddy to finish covering shed and they worked on a new cotton house part of day. I rehoed all of garden for turnips by 10 in morn. Wiley came in our old buggy and led a mule at 10 3/4 in morn and Nellie and Rena went in Dixie's buggy (drove Hattie) as far as Cohen's and I drove Rachael to Wiley's buggy and Wiley rode a mule on to Pinson place. I got some things at Cohen's and drove Hattie to Dixie's buggy back home and got here just before sunset.

Sat. 28th. Bright and warm till 3 1/2 in eve and thundered and showered around near at 4 to 7 but none here. I planted most of garden in turnips in morn by 8 and Pa, Willie and I picked cotton on H ridge at 8 1/4 to 10 3/4 in morn. Mary and Clara and her 2 smallest children came at 10 in morn and went to Estina at 2 1/2 in eve. Pa, Willie and I walked over to Coon place to look at the old millstones but found them too heavy for us to haul on cart (at 3 to 4 in eve). B C here late in eve and till 9 at night.

Sun. 29th. Bright and warm all day but thundered and showered far off in eve but none here. Willie rode Dan to Aunt Mary's early in morn and Lewis and Cousin Mary went too. (Tom and Gus are both sick in bed) and they came back at dusk. Pa walked to Clara's in eve and B C came at 3 in eve and he and Dixie and I walked to school house and had Sunday School there at 4 to 6 in eve. I rode Hattie down in cow pasture in morn and salted cattle.

Mon. 30th. Bright and warm most of day but thundered and showered around near late in eve but only dropped little here. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton till 10 1/2 in morn in Coon field and I hauled it in cart with Hattie. Wiley came there at 10 and Willie rode Rachael over to Stewart place by 11 1/2 to borrow a sand pump for Wiley but didn't get it. Wiley left at 3 in eve. Lewis here all morn and put a new shaft and cross-tie to Dixie's buggy. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton part of eve in orchard. Willie rode Joe and I Hattie up the creek and hunted our bull (to castrate) but didn't find him. Sims sent us word at dusk that the bull was at his cowpen. Mary Miller here at night.

Tue. 31st. Bright and warm all day and a thundercloud came up from SE at dark and sprinkled a little here and rained hard just SW of here. Pa picked cotton in orchard most of day and I picked there most of day after 8 in morn. Willie and I walked to Sims' early in
