AUGUST 1888

Wed. Aug. 1st. Bright and warm all morn and we had a good shower from NE at 12 1/2 to 1 1/2 and cloudy all eve. I finished scraping slips by front gate by 10 in morn and set out 6 rows there in vines which had died out in eve. I made a tub for Nellie out of a flour bbl at 1 1/2 to 3. Willie and I picked some peas late in eve in Dewberry cut to feed on.

Thu. 2nd. Bright most of day and quite warm from E and thundershowers passed around all eve but none here. I hoed in Willie's cotton on short poor end of Cherry cut next to persimmon tree till 10 in morn and I hoed in sugar cane in new ground from 2 to 5. Willie and I picked some peas late in eve in Dewberry cut.

Fri. 3rd. Bright and quite warm from SE till 12 and a dark cloud came up then from SW and rained hard just beyond creek but only dropped here. Cloudy all eve and damp SE wind and dropped rain late in eve. I rode old J to town in morn and got our buggy and paid Benedict $9.25 for 2 new wheels and fixing one spoke in hind wheel and got some things from Schaefer's. Tom Netterville came home with me at 12 1/4 and dined here and left at 2 1/2. I picked an oat sackful of whip peas (between roadside and Cane hollow) for seed at 3 to 4 1/4. Willie and I picked some in Dewberry cut late in eve.

Sat. 4th. Bright and warm all morn and thundered and showered around at 12 1/4 to 2 but only dropped here. I hoed in Willie's cotton on poor E end of Cherry cut till 11 1/4 in morn. Willie picked some peas in Dewberry cut to feed on in morn. Dan here most of eve. I didn't work in eve but dyed 2 bridles.

Sun. 5th. Bright and warm most of day from W. Thundered and showered around some from 1 to 2 but none here. Nellie and Willie drove old J to buggy and I rode Salome (first time) to Sunday School in town. We didn't stay to preaching but got home at 12 1/4. Cousin Dosia here all day.

Mon. 6th. Bright and warm and getting dry. Wind and some cloud from SW - thundered in SW, E and SE late in eve and at night. I hoed in Willie's cotton in old watermelon patch hollow till 10 1/4 in morn and picked an oat sack of whip peas for seed on poor E end of Gate cut and some to feed on there in eve. Mrs Baker and Mattie C came home with children from school late in eve. I had a pain in left side of my head all eve and all night.

Tue. 7th. Bright and warm all day from SW and thundered in S and SE at night. I finished hoeing Willie's cotton in old watermelon patch hollow by 10 3/4 in morn. I rode Salome to Cohen's in eve (the first time that I rode her by herself) and got $1 worth of coffee and a pr of coarse shoes for myself and one for Rena on credit and got some things I paid for and returned before sunset.

Wed. 8th. Bright and warm and thundered all last night and most of today in E and SE and a dark cloud blew up from NE at 9 at night and rained enough to run off house. I plowed the slips (15 rows) by front gate on E side with old J with 4 furrows by 7 1/2 in morn and hilled 8 rows of them with hoe by 11. I picked an oat sack of whip peas for seed on poor E end of Gate cut at 2 1/2 to 4 and Willie and I picked some there to feed on late in eve.

Thu. 9th. Bright and warm till 2 1/2 and clouded up from NE and rained in slow showers at 4 to 7 here but not enough to run for the ground is dry. I hilled 6 of slips by front gate and finished by 8 1/2 in morn and hoed in sugar cane scraping down both sides of rows till 10 3/4. I threshed about one peck of whip peas at 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 and picked some to feed on by 4 and rain stopped me balance of eve.

Fri. 10th. Bright and warm from SW and thundered and showered in SE far off in eve. I hoed cotton on far S corner of Persimmon cut in new part till 11 and I picked peas to feed on most of eve. Willie and I got up old Mat from cow pasture at 5 to 6 in eve. Nellie rode old J to Pa's in eve.

Sat. 11th. Bright and warm all morn and thundershowers passed around some in eve and sprinkled here. Willie rode Salome (first time) and I rode Mat to Uncle Gus's in morn and they had a good rain there and we got home at dusk. I had a dull headache in eve and it left me at night.

Sun. 12th. Bright and warm till 3 in eve and thundered and showered around then but none here. Nellie and I drove old J to buggy and Dixie rode old Mat and Willie rode Salome to Chappel in morn. Mr. Sadler preached and we returned at 2 3/4. Clarissa stayed here with Rena.

Mon. 13th. Bright and warm all day from NE. I hoed in sugar cane till 10 3/4 in morn and finished laying it by. I shelled whip peas for seed in barn at 12 1/2 to 1 1/2 and picked an oat sack full of dry ones for seed in Dewberry cut at 1 1/2 to 4. Willie and I picked some to feed on late in eve.

Tue. 14th. Bright and warm all morn and thundershowers passed around from E most of eve but none here. I hoed cotton on SE corner of Persimmon cut till 11 in morn and picked an oat sack of whip peas for seed on poor E end of Gate cut in eve. Willie and I picked some to feed on late in eve. Dixie rode to Chapel to preaching in morn.

Wed. 15th. Cloudy and began to rain in slow showers from SE at 6 1/2 in morn and stormed with high wind and hard rain at 9 1/2 to 11 and rained slowly most of eve. I hoed cotton about 2 hours on SE corner of Persimmon cut early in morn and did nothing balance of day on account of rain. Bud came here at 9 in morn and here all day and all night.

Thu. 16th. Cloudy all day and sun shined but little and dropped rain some at 9 to 10 and again in eve at 4 from S and thundershowers passed around in eve. Bud stayed here last night and left early in morn. I fixed spring and hoed up grass in all of Nellie's flower ground by 9 1/2 in morn and picked some peas at 10 to 11 and shelled some seed ones in barn at 12 1/2 to 1 1/2 and picked some peas in Dewberry cut to feed on at 2 to 3 3/4 in eve and rain stopped me. Willie and Rena didn't go to school on yesterday on account of rain but both went today.

Fri. 17th. Bright and warm most of morn and rained a little shower here at 11 from NE and thundershowers passed around most of eve. I cut some trees and bushes and put in big road where it goes to Mr. D's field and dug down banks with hoe and spade and finished working road there by 10 3/4 and rain ran me home. I shelled some whip peas for seed at 12 1/2 to 1 1/2 and picked some to feed on in Dewberry cut in eve. Dixie rode to Chapel to preaching late in eve and at night.

Sat. 18th. Bright and warm all morn and sprinkled here at 12 from E and thundershowers passed around most of eve. I worked big road where our road goes into it by 8 in morn and Willie and I picked some whip peas to feed on by 10 in Dewberry cut. I rode Salome to Cohen's in eve and got some things and I paid for cord and sugar and got 75 cts worth on credit. I returned before sunset.

Sun. 19th. Cloudy and began to rain from SE in showers with high wind at 10 in morn and lasted most of eve and all night with a high NE wind which blew all of crop down badly. All of us home all day. Pa came at 8 1/2 and Jacob Chambers and his wife and Miss Cook came at 10 1/2 and left at 5 in eve. Pa left at 4 1/2.

Mon. 20th. It rained and stormed all last night from NE (which blew down crop and some trees and part of garden pickets) and rained with good deal of wind from W all morn and some in eve. Willie and Rena didn't go to school. Willie and I nailed up wire around new ground where it was loose at 9 1/2 to 10 in morn and patched up some of fence between garden and field in eve and threw out garden entirely. We left our cattle in cow pasture in morn and didn't put them outside.

Tue. 21st. Bright most of day but showered some at 10 1/2 and again at 12 and at 1 1/2 from SW. I drove old J to cart to Cohen's in morn and got a bbl of flour and a ham and some turnip seed on credit and returned at 11 1/2. I picked some peas in Dewberry cut to feed on in eve. Willie and Rena went to school today.

Wed. 22nd. Bright and warm after 8 in morn and moist with wind pleasant from N in eve. I patched up fence (picket) between garden and field and fixed Spring gate by 11 1/2 and shelled whip peas for seed at 12 1/2 to 1 1/2 and picked some whip peas in Dewberry cut to feed on in eve.

Thu. 23rd. Bright and warm most of day from SE and sprinkled rain at 2 and again late in eve (passing showers). I hoed all of flower garden 2nd time (trying to kill sod) by 8 in morn and went around all of fence around our calf pasture and stopped pig holes by 11 1/2 and put our 3 pigs out of pen into pasture at 1 1/2. I picked peas most of eve in Dewberry cut to feed on.

Fri. 24th. Bright and warm from E all morn and cloudy most of eve and thundershowers passed around but only sprinkled here at 4 1/2 in eve. I cut a cut for blocks from Oak toward Coon place ( which Dan cut for pickets some time ago) and made 4 blocks out of it and got 4 more there from 2 quarters of past timber by 11 and hauled the 8 blocks and 5 posts to make some small blocks in eve in 3 loads on cart.

Sat. 25th. Bright and warm most of day. It rained a good shower here at 2 from SE. Willie and Rena got some moss for Nellie from back of our pasture early in morn and Willie and I picked some peas to feed on at 8 to 10 in Dewberry cut and finished last of that cut of peas having picked all of it over twice. Miss Fanny Ida here all day and Tom Netterville dined here and went on to town. Willie and I walked squirrel hunting in cow pasture in eve and killed only one.

Sun. 26th. Bright and warm most of day from SE and showered around some from that way in eve but only dropped here. None of us went to Sunday School. Nellie, Dixie and Rena at Mr. D's all day. Willie, Gus and I here till 3 in eve and I rode Salome to Pa's at 3 to 6 in eve and Willie and Gus here all eve.

Mon. 27th. Bright and warm from SE all day and showered around some late in eve but none here. Pa, Dan, Dick, Lewis and Gus came in morn and we put blocks under E side of our house and some under gallery on E side and finished by 3 in eve and all left then but Pa and Gordon - they left at 5.

Tue. 28th. Cloudy and quite warm most of morn and a thunder cloud came up from N at 1 and rained a slow rain here from 3 to 5 1/2 -enough to run well. I rehoed flower ground for turnips and planted 2 papers of radish seeds in Cane hollow and picked some peas to feed on by 11 1/2 and shelled some whip peas for seed at 12 1/2 to 2 and picked 7 pds of cotton (first in new ground) at 2 1/4 to 3 and rain stopped me. I gathered some moss in Sims' pasture at 3 1/4 to 4 1/4.

Wed. 29th. Cloudy most of day and rained slowly from 1 1/2 till 4 in eve from S. I cleaned out hen house and both of stables and hauled all of manure (about 6 or 7 bbls) into flower garden (for turnips) and sawed some low limbs from the two cedars between kitchen and hen house by 10 1/2. Gus brought our buggy home at 9 (he and Seymour went to Centerville on yesterday and brought Maggie D and Lola B). I shelled some butter beans and whip peas for seed at 12 1/2 to 4 in eve and got some wood.

Thu. 30th. Bright and warm most of morn and rained a heavy shower at 2 and a heavy rain at 4 to 5 with some close thunder from W and SW. I dug up all of flower garden with hoe in morn and picked 8 pds of cotton in new ground at 1 to 2 and rain stopped me. Nellie and Dixie went to Mr. D's at 1 1/2 and Dixie went with Mr. D's folks across creek to baseball game and creek was so high that Dixie, Willie and Rena stayed on other side all night. Nellie came home from her Pa's at 4. I had a dull headache all eve.

Fri. 31st. Cloudy and rained 2 or 3 showers from W in morn and 3 in eve. Dixie came home at 10 1/2 in morn and Willie and Rena at 3. I lay in bed and suffered with headache all last night and this morn till 12 today and got up then and got some corn to feed on and cleaned out spring in eve.
