AUGUST 1886

Sun. Aug. 1st. Bright and warm most of day. It showered around some at 11 to 3 but only sprinkled here at 1 1/2. Our old spotted sow and shoats got into field at Sims' old orchard on yesterday. I put the sow in pasture with Tank and Chunk and put her 5 shoats in pen with the black pig which we got from Dan (early in morn). Dixie, Willie and I went to Sunday School and Nellie and Rena stayed home in morn. Nellie, Rena and Dixie at Mr. D's all eve (Clara Stuart there). Willie, Gus, Bud and I here all eve.

Mon. 2nd. Cloudy and damp - wind from W. Had a heavy long rain from NW at 11 1/2 to 2. I scraped some of slip potatoes on H ridge and Dick came at 9 to 10 1/2 and rain stopped me at 11. Clara Stuart here all day. Willie and I walked and got up young J from cow pasture at 4 to 5 and brought home some corn in ear late in eve. W Schlesinger sent me a note by Bill Leatherman in eve.

Tue. 3rd. Bright and warm. Nellie and Rena rode old J and I rode young J to Tigner's at 6 to 10 in morn. Tigner and Reuben went to convention in Woodville in morn.

Wed. 4th. Bright and warm. Nellie, Rena and I left Tigner's at 8 1/4 in morn and got home at 12 1/2. Mattie C and Seymour stayed here with Dixie and Willie last night. Nellie and I walked over to Pa's in eve and back by dusk. Tigner brought Ma home late in eve. I took headache in morn and had it bad late in eve and all night and slept but little.

Thu. 5th. Bright and warm. I lay in bed all morn and suffered and vomited some with headache. I drank cup of coffee and ate a biscuit at dinner time (the first that I ate since yesterday at dinner) and got better by 2 o'clock and took up manure and got some corn in ear.

Fri. 6th. Cloudy most of day and rained a shower from NW at 12 to 1 (it rained a hard quick shower just at dark last night from NW). Willie and I cut all around our pasture fence and stopped pig holes and marked the 5 little spotted shoats and put them in our calf pasture with their mother and put Tank and Chunk outside in woods by 10. Mr. A Newman came at 10 1/2 to 11 1/2 and Tigner and Reuben in buggy at 11 3/4 and ate dinner here and I went to Pa's with them at 1 to 4 1/2 and they left here then for home.

Sat. 7th. Bright and warm and no rain. Dick D and I rode to town in morn and Alice and W. Schlesinger were married at Tigner's at 9 and came to town by 12 and Dick and I brought Babe out from town and Dick took him on to Pa's at 3. I got 10 pds sugar from Mayer for 7 doz eggs which I carried to town and got 2 preserve jars from R and W for 50 cts. I got home at 2 1/2 and got some corn and got up young J from cow pasture late in eve. Nellie and Rena walked to Pa's late in eve and back.

Sun. 8th. Bright and pleasant - N breeze - no signs of rain. Dixie, Willie and I went to Sunday School. Willie and I came home to dinner. Dixie stopped at her Pa's. Nellie and Rena went to Pa's early in morn and Willie and I went there in eve. Alice came there at Noon to get some clothing and things. Joe Miller and Lewis there in eve. Pa was there but went back to Morgan's at 4.

Mon. 9th. Bright, cool early in morn and warm and cloudy late in eve from SE. I gathered some figs and a few peaches early in morn for Nellie to preserve and finished hoeing slip potatoes on H ridge in 1 hour and hoed some of Willie's cotton in bottom of poor E end of Gate cut till 10 1/2. Mr. A Newman here at 10 1/2 to 11. I hoed in cotton in Persimmon cut on S end next to watermelon patch all eve.

Tue. 10th. Bright and warm most of day. It thundered and showered around not very far off in eve. I hoed in Willie's cotton in bottom till 10 in morn and I hoed in cotton in Persimmon cut just E of Cherry stump most of eve. Dan came late in eve and brought some papers to Nellie and paid her the $3 borrowed from her some time ago.

Wed. 11th. Bright and warm and thundered far off in eve in SE. I hoed cotton all day in Persimmon cut by Cherry stump scraping both sides of furrow.

Thu. 12th. Bright and warm most of day and thundered and showered around from 2 to 4 in eve. I hoed in cotton in Persimmon cut on hilltop by stump till 9 in morn. All of us went to our little church and Sadler preached there at 11 1/2 to 1. Nellie and Rena went on from there to Pa's and Dixie to Mr. D Chambers. Willie and I rode old J home and rode back to Pa's at 4 1/2 in eve and Sadler baptized Mrs Fanny T Holloman at wash branch W of Pa's at 5 1/2 in eve.

Fri. 13th. Bright and warm and getting dry. I hoed in cotton on hilltop in Persimmon cut and finished hilltop by 10 in morn. Willie carried 2 watermelons to Pa's in morn. I didn't hoe any in eve but rode around in field, brought some corn home and got up young J from cow pasture late in eve.

Sat. 14th. Bright, warm and dry - NW breeze. I hoed in cotton in Persimmon cut by watermelon patch till 10 in morn. I rode old J to Cohen's in eve and paid him $6 on plants which I got him to order and got some coffee, sugar, meat, lard and calico and envelopes and paid for all and returned before sunset.

Sun. 15th. Bright, warm and dry - N breeze. Dixie and I rode to Sunday School. Willie, Nellie and Rena stayed home and Bud came back from Sunday School with us and he and Dixie and Mr. D's folks went to Woodville at night but there was no preaching. Clara Stuart came in eve late and here all night.

Mon. 16th. Bright, warm, dry and thundered far off most of day. I hoed awhile in cotton on far SE corner of Persimmon cut in morn. Clara S stayed here last night and she, Nellie, Dixie and Rena went to Pa's in eve. Willie and I picked 24 pds of cotton in cut by front gate on E side in eve (the first picked).

Tue. 17th. Bright and warm till 3 1/2 in eve and a dark cloud came up from SE and rained heavily with wind and thunder (a storm toward Cohen's). Willie and I walked to Steve Lee's and marked some hogs for him and 3 for Anthony Wade by 8 in morn. Willie, Rena and I picked 34 pds of cotton in cut by front gate and picked over all of cut between front gate and big road by 10 1/4. I rode old J by Pa's in eve and on to town (Dick D sick in bed with fever). The storm caught us at Abe F's and I stopped there out of it and I had to go around by Fugler's to town late in eve. I got home by 9 at night.

Wed. 18th. Bright and very warm most of day. It thundered and showered around, not very near most of eve. I cleaned out spring and hoed in cotton in SE corner of Persimmon cut till 10 1/2 in morn and brought home 2 sacks of corn on old J from field and hoed up grass in garden for turnips most of eve and sweated till I was wet (it was very sultry).

Thu. 19th. Bright and warm all morn and a dark cloud came up from SE at 1 1/2 and we had a good little shower then and a cloudy and pleasant breeze balance of eve and all night from E. I hoed in cotton in SE corner of Persimmon cut and finished hoeing last of that cut by 10 1/2 in morn and Willie and I cut and ate 2 little watermelons there at patch. I felt sick and had dull headache all eve and didn't work any but walked all over field and got some wood. Willie and I walked over by pasture bars at dusk coon hunting but found nothing.

Fri. 20th. Bright and warm most of day but a pleasant SE breeze all day - no rain. Willie and I tied and threw down Katie's red bull and I castrated him early in morn. I hoed up grass in garden for turnips till 10 in morn. Nellie, Dixie and Eliza washed, scoured and sunned everything today. I brought home 2 sacks corn and stopped some leaks over kitchen in eve and grabbled 12 potatoes (the first) in eve.

Sat. 21st. Bright and warm most of day - rained a light shower late in eve from SE - just enough to run off house. I rehoed some of turnip ground in garden by 9 in morn and Willie and I picked some dried butter beans by 10 and went in cow pasture and tried to catch young J but could not. I rode old J to Cohens' in eve and got some coffee, 10 ct pack tobacco for Eliza and paid for them. I got 75 cts turnip seeds on credit. I returned just before sunset and rain caught me nearly home.

Sun. 22nd. Bright and warm and no rain. Dixie rode old J and Willie and I walked to Sunday School and I held school (Mr. D went to Glouster to work on last Thursday). Dan came back from Sunday School with us and Willie went to Mr. D Chambers. Nellie, Dixie, Rena and Dan went to Mr. D's in eve. I rode old J to Pa's. He was there. He has been staying at Morgan's for more than a month, but Morgan came back on yesterday.

Mon. 23rd. Bright, warm, dry and thundered far off in E and NE most of eve. Seymour and I hauled one load of the 500 feet of flooring in morn and the second and last load in eve. Seymour walked Dan and one of Parker's mules to wagon. Seymour and Uncle Gus dined here and Uncle Gus went to Pa's late in eve. I got 1/2 bushel of salt from Cohens' on credit and owe him $4 on plank.

Tue. 24th. Bright, warm, dry and thundered in NE most of eve. Came near late at night but didn't rain. Willie and Rena picked 20 pds cotton in cut by front gate on E side in morn. Willie and I picked 15 there and 15 in new ground in eve and cut some poles and brush and put on fence around new ground on side next to Sims' calf pasture. Nellie rode old J to Pa's in eve. Clara S here most of eve. I hauled 13 baskets of manure on slide into garden and spread on turnip ground by 11 in morn. A Newman here at 9 1/2 to 10 1/2 in morn.

Wed. 25th. Bright with some dark clouds till 2 and a cloud came up from NW and we had a light shower of rain and a hard wind. I hauled some 12 or 13 baskets of manure on slide into garden and dug a part of it in morn. Willie and I cut 2 forks and a pole and racked the plank late in eve.

Thu. 26th. Bright and warm all day and it rained a light shower at dusk from NE. I dug under manure in garden and planted most of ground in turnips by 10 in morn. Willie and I picked some cotton on the W side of new ground in eve. Dan came in eve and got his pants which Nellie dyed on yesterday.

Fri. 27th. Bright and warm all day and no rain. I hoed up all of grass on W side of garden by 10 and cleaned out cotton house by 11. Willie and I picked cotton on E side of new ground and finished there first time in eve. I had a pain in left side of head last night and most of today. Willie and I picked over most of manured part of Willie's cotton on poor E end of Gate cut next to H ridge at 9 1/2 to 10 1/2 in morn.

Sat. 28th. Bright and warm till 2 in eve and clouded up then and we had a good rain which lasted most of eve until in night. It was much needed. I dug up W side of garden (where I hoed up grass on yesterday) and planted lst of it in turnips by 9 in morn and got up young J from pasture by 11. Willie and I brought home some corn, got some wood before rain in eve which began at 2 1/4 and I stayed in house most of eve. Dixie went to her Pa's to stay all night.

Sun. 29th. Bright, warm and no rain. Willie and I went to Sunday School and Dixie went from Mr. D's. Nellie and Rena stayed home. I held school. Willie and I came back home for dinner. Nellie and Rena rode old J, I rode young J and Willie walked to Pa's in eve. Dan at Mr. D's from Sunday School.

Mon. 30th. It rained in slow showers at 7 to 10 in morn and bright and pleasant N breeze balance of day. Willie and I hauled 2 cartlaods of gravel from back of pasture and put by front door at 10 to 12 1/4 in morn and Willie and I picked cotton all eve in cut by front gate. Cousins Dozia and Clara S and Dick D here in eve.

Tue. 31st. Clear but smoky and cool N breeze all day - no signs of rain. I spread the gravel by front gallery and packed and cut up some wood early in morn. Willie and I picked cotton by front gate at 9 to 12. Clara and Gordon and baby here all day. Dan here all eve (or most of it). I gathered last of yellow corn in old watermelon patch hollow - about 4 sacks - and brought it home on old J at 1 1/2 to 3 and shucked some of it for seed late in eve. I put 5 little baskets of cotton on barn and cart sheds to sun and took it down and put in cotton house late in eve.
