AUGUST 1882

Tue. Aug. 1st. Bright till 10, very warm till 4 in eve. It began to shower around at 9 in morn and lasted till 5 in eve. We had several light showers enough to make mud. I hilled all of my second planting of slips with my hoe and finished them by 11 in morn. I hunted a guineas' nest toward old orchard in Pierces' ground at 2 but found none. It showered so that I did not work in eve.

Wed. 2nd. Bright and warm in morn, and heavy showers passed around near at 1 to 3 but only dropped here. I scraped the 4 rows of slips last set out and hoed some of cotton in circle on H ridge till 11 in morn. I hoed all of the SE corner of cotton in hollow (up to road) on H ridge in eve. I had slight headache today and suffered late in eve and at night with soreness and pain in lower part of my right side and was very feverish at night, and took 2 alt pills.

Thu. 3rd. Bright and pleasant, NW breeze all day. I hoed and finished SE corner of Persimmon cut by 10 1/2 in morn. Ophelia Floyd here a while in morn. Alice, Clara and baby here all day. I hoed some on SE corner of H ridge in youngest cotton in eve. I had headache all last night and bad till 1 today.

Fri. 4th. It thundered in NW all last night and we had a heavy rain from W at sunrise with thunder and little wind and it showered all day from SW. I did nothing in morn. Willie and I rode in field at 1 1/2 and I fixed spring and water gap and cut some weeds in path by Spring gate and rain stopped me at 4. All of us have colds. I just took mine today, the rest on day before yesterday.

Sat. 5th. Cloudy most of day, rained light shower at 10 1/2 from SW. I cut 2 poles and put on my manure pen and hoed and put manure around pecan trees on W side and S side of house in morn and hoed down weeds in hollow by Spring gate in eve. Children and I went hunting in field in eve but killed nothing. I was feverish and sweated all night.

Sun. 6th. Bright and warm till 1 and rained a slow rain from SW from 1 1/2 till late in eve. Dixie, children and I went to Sunday School in morn. Nellie stayed home.

Mon. 7th. Bright and warm till late in eve, and then it clouded up, thundered around and threatened rain but didn't rain here. I hoed down all the weeds W of house between Spring gate and barn (that I left on Sat.) and hoed and manured around 2 pecan and 5 apple trees back of hen house by 10 1/2 in morn and found a guinea nest on bank of old road by plum trees with 11 eggs at 11 in morn. Nellie and Willie rode to Pa's at 2 . I walked to creek with them. I hoed 1 apple and 2 peach trees on N side of orchard in eve.

Tue. 8th. Bright and pleasant, NW breeze in morn, warm in eve. I hoed in youngest cotton by dead pines on H ridge till 10 1/2 in morn and graded some corn at 11. I cut some sassafras poles and sawed them up and hauled them in (to make bed scaffolds) in eve. I was very feverish at night and took 2 alt pills. I am still suffering from cramping pains in my side.

Wed. 9th. A cloud came up from NW just after sunrise but only dropped here. Bright and pleasant, NW breeze till 2 then threatened till 5 and we had 3 hard showers from NW which lasted till away in the night. I made 4 benches for bed scaffolds in morn and finished them by 10 1/2. I fixed old fodder house and put cart in it in eve and we got some poles for bed scaffolds just before the rain late in eve. I was feverish and sweated some at night.

Thu. 10th. Cloudy till 11 and sun shined some from then till night. It showered from SW from 1 1/2 to 4 but rained only a little. Wind and clouds from NW all day. I began to hoe in garden and hoed from gate almost to potatoebed by 11. We went to cut bay in pasture for moss late in eve but didn't. Dan came late in eve.

Fri. 11th. Cloudy and dark and dropped rain some in morn. Bright from 11 till night but showers passed around here in eve. Willie and I found a guinea's nest in locust thicket early in morn (she set out last night) with 15 eggs. I hoed in garden till 11 in morn. I cut a bay tree in pasture for moss which fell across fence and into cotton and we had hard work getting it out of road. I was very feverish at night.

Sat. 12th. Cloudy till 9 then bright till 1 and threatened most of eve but only dropped rain. I hoed on back side of ground till 11 in morn. I got a sk of boatcorn in eve and rode to Clarissa's. Charles is sick and has been for several days. I was feverish at night and sweated some.

Sun. 13th. Bright and warm till 3 1/2 in eve and a cloud came up from SW at 3 1/2 and rained a good shower at 5 1/2. All of us went to Sunday School in morn and to Pa's to dinner. The cloud ran us home at 4 in eve. I was feverish and sweaty at night.

Mon. 14th. Bright and warm till 3 and a cloud came up from SW at 3 1/2 and rained slowly till late in eve. I hoed on back side of garden till 10 1/2 in morn and grated some corn at 11. Dosia and Gussy came at 2 1/2. I went to gather some moss at 3 but cloud ran me home before I got a sk full. I have soreness and pains in my bowels and have had for some time.

Tue. 15th. Cloudy till 10 and bright balance of day and no rain. I hoed in garden till 9 1/2 in morn and Willie and I got some corn in Dewberry cut and we went to Jane Lucketts' and discovered who has been pulling my fence there. We grated some corn at 11. Nellie rode by Clarissa's and on to Pa's in eve. Dixie, children and I got some moss from pasture and found Dolly's calf outside by Lyn log. I was feverish and took 1 alt pill at night. Nellie took 4 late in eve.

Wed. 16th. Bright and warm and thundered far off in eve. I took 3 doses of cin today. I rode to Harrison's early in morn to tell him about Ben pulling my fence and then I cut a beech on brush part of pasture fence and fixed part of it till 10. Ma was here all day. I rode to Clarissa's with her in eve and on across the creek. My cotton is opening fast since Mon.

Thu. 17th. Bright and warm, wind from NW, thundered far off all day. A cloud blew up from N just after we went to bed and we had a good shower. Nellie and I went to town in morn and got a hat for her,$2.50, and 2 lace collars, 50 cts., from Mrs. Habig and a pair of button shoes for Lena, $1.50, and bucket collars for me and a pair of suspenders from Kaiser and 1 doz thread for Ma and 3 pds sugar for us. Nellie got 8 yds dotted calico from Kaiser on credit. We paid for everything else. We returned at 1 1/2 and got very warm. I took 1 alt pill last night and 3 doses cin today. My navel and all around it is very sore. Nellie made a pair of suspenders for me at 2 1/2 and I put them on. Willie and I picked 28 pds of cotton on H ridge in eve, the first we've picked except for 5 pds that Willie and Rena picked on Tue. eve.

Fri. 18th. Bright and warm and thundered far off all eve. I caught a large male opossum in ground early in morn. I worked on and finished brush part of pasture fence by 9 1/2 in morn and took down and sawed off front gate at 10 1/2. I had kind of blindness at 11 1/2 and a dull headache balance of day and all night. I took 3 doses of cin today. Willie and I picked 30 pds cotton on E side of H ridge in eve. Bud came late in eve.

Sat. 19th. Bright and pleasant, wind cool and from N. I cut 20 poles and fixed 10 panels of fence below cow pen and finished it by 10 1/2 and grated some corn. Dan came early to offer his horse to Nellie to ride to chapel tomorrow evening. I did not work in eve. My cotton is beginning to open very fast. I took 3 doses of cin today and am still suffering from soreness in and around navel and am feverish and sweat some every night.

Sun. 20th. Bright and pleasant, wind from NE and cloud from SE. Dixie, Willie and I went to Sunday School - Nellie and Rena stayed home in morn. Hattie Floyd came home with us. I rode to Pa's in eve and all of us walked to creek with Hattie late in eve. I took 1 dose of cin in morn and stopped taking it.

Mon. 21st. Bright most of day. A dark cloud came up from S at 1 but just rained enough here to run off the house good. I cleaned out my barn and cotton house and finished by 9 1/2 in morn and got some corn in Dewberry cut and grated some at 10 1/2. Willie and I picked 28 pds of corn on W end of H ridge (knocking off 10) in old cotton in eve. Mr. Sims came late in eve, hunting some chickens for Mrs. Van Eaton. I was very feverish late in eve and all night.

Tue. 22nd. Bright and warm most of day. We had a good hard shower from W at 10 1/2 in morn. I took poles out of henhouse, cleaned it out and smoked lice with sulfur but it didn't kill them. Nellie burned them in eve. Willie and I picked 15 pds of cotton on H ridge in morn and 30 in eve, after knocking off 19 altogether. I wasn't feverish much at night.

Wed. 23rd. Bright and warm till 11 1/2, and cloudy balance of day. It rained a light shower from SW at 3 in eve. I hoed all around my sugar cane early in morn and Willie and I hunted and killed 3 rats at barn. We picked 20 pds cotton by 11 in morn and 10 in eve on H ridge. Rain stopped us at 3. Nellie rode to Pa's in eve. I wasn't feverish much at night but still have soreness in my side.

Thu. 24th. Bright and warm till 3 1/2 in eve and then dark clouds came up from SW but only dropped rain here. Willie and I hunted rats at barn and Cotton house early but caught none. I sawed off weather boarding on backside of cotton house and moved the last of seed out of it. We picked 25 pds cotton on H ridge by 11 1/2. I picked 25 pds in eve and finished all of old cotton there first time. Clara here in eve fluting dresses.

Fri. 25th. Bright and warm till 12, cloudy and thundered around and threatened rain all eve and did sprinkle several times and a right good little shower late in eve and at dark from SW. I rode to town in morn and carried Mrs Habig's parasol which she loaned Nellie on last Thu. Took 1 1/2 doz eggs to Mrs H. and got 2 1/2 yds pink ribbon for Rena and a knife for Willie for 30 cts from J Cohen. I got 3/4 pd of turnip seed from R&W on credit, and 6 yds towels and 1 ball of thread (for cotton sks) and 5 pds coffee from Kaiser on credit and got 5 pds nails, 2 of sugar, 1 pkg grits and 6 loaves bread and paid for them. I returned at 11 1/2. Nellie and Dixie cooked for meeting tomorrow in morn. I found my cart side broken in eve and fixed it.

Sat. 26th. Cloudy and rained from W from 8 to 11. A good little shower all together. We fixed to go to quarterly conference meeting in morn but didn't go till 1 1/2 in eve and got there too late to hear the sermon but had dinner after we got there. I carried ours and Mr. D's on cart. Weather bright in eve. We returned an hour and 1/2 by sun in eve.

Sun. 27th. Some clouds all day and thunder showers passed around all day but only sprinkled here. All of us went to Church in morn and had 2 sermons-1 in morn and 1 in eve and dinner on the grounds. Mr. Brown preached both times. I took headache in eve and had it all night. I took 1 alt pill and dose of soda late in eve.

Mon. 28th. Bright and warm and thunder showers passed around far off all day but no rain here. I woke with headache and had it severely till 12. It went off in eve. I sawed off S end of Cotton house and we caught 2 large rats there in morn. I went with Seymour at 1 to get some slippery elm bark for his Pa, he is sick. Dixie made 4 new cotton sacks in morn and she, children and I picked cotton in Gate cut in eve. Got 75 pds deducting 25.

Tue. 29th. Bright and warm, thundered far off all day, wind from NW. I cleaned out and put back floor in my cotton house and finished all of it but little by door by 11 1/2 in morn. Dixie, Willie and I picked cotton in Gate cut in eve and got 65.

Wed. 30th. Bright and warm, some dark clouds all day and a cloud came up from NW late in eve and it rained a good hard shower about 11 at night. I finished cotton house and put some cotton in it early in morn. Dixie, Willie and I picked cotton a while in Gate cut in morn and again in eve. I gathered a bbl of clean, shucked corn by front gate at 1 and 2 for bread.

Thu. 31st. It rained a hard shower at 11 last night and bright and warm today till 4 in eve, then rained a good little shower here and heavily up the creek. Dixie, children and I shelled 1 1/2 bu. corn for bread early in morn. Mr. D came at 9 in morn. Dixie, Willie and I picked cotton in Gate cut till 4 in eve and cloud ran us home (it was too wet to pick in morn). Clara came in eve and creek was so high late in eve that she couldn't cross and had to stay all night with us. I rode to creek with her late in eve.
