AUGUST 1880

Sun. Aug. 1st. Warm and bright and rained toward W in eve. Nellie and Rena at her Pa's all day. Willie and I dined at Pa's; cousin Tom there. I went to Harrison's house late in eve to see my bull hurt.

Mon. 2nd. It rained slowly from daylight till 8 in morn and again late in eve and at night. I grated some corn and picked some whip peas and butter beans in morn. I rode horseback to town and carried them to Mr. Drake in eve. Mr. D. put up steps for us and Dan in eve.

Tue. 3rd. Cloudy most of day. Wind from N and cool and drizzly in eve. I scraped most of the 4 slip rows next to the garden in morn and tried some of cotton and sugar cane here in yard in eve but it was too wet. Pa came by on way from Morgan's.

Wed. 4th. Cool and cloudy with wind from N. I finished scraping the 4 slip rows and hoed cotton N of cowpen most of day. Clara came in eve and rode Fanny back home.

Thu. 5th. Cool and cloudy; sun shined some. I had severe toothache at 1 this morn and all day. I took 3 alt pills at 1. I plowed the 10 rows of slips next to garden and hilled some of them with hoe. Ma here all day. I gave C. T. 5 alt pills in eve.

Fri. 6th. Cool, bright most of day. I was sick all day; vomited all day with headache. I took 3 alt pills at dark. I hilled all of slips but a 1/2 row by 9 and was too sick to work balance of day. Rena went home with Ma yesterday.

Sat. 7th. Bright and warmer. I was sick all last night. I commenced to take cin this morning. I saved some tomatoe seed and fixed Julia's collar in morn and hilled last slip row and picked a few whip peas for seed in eve. Dan came by hunting and gave me some ammunition. Mr. Sims came late in eve.

Sun. 8th. Warm and cloudy in morn and had a heavy rain from SE at 2. Nellie, Willie and I went to Pa's in morn. I crossed Nellie and children on Julia late in eve. The creek was up. Mr. D came here early in morn and he went to see my crop.

Mon. 9th. Bright till 10 and showered from 11 to 2. I set out some tomatoes in my watermelon patch; fixed my spring, cleaned some tomatoeseed and grated some corn in morn. Jane Carter came at 10 1/2. I made a grater in eve. Charlie Newman came by and got a puppy.

Tue. 10th. Bright till 10 and showered most of eve. I cleaned out my cotton house in morn. Jane Luckett here in eve. I picked and shelled some butter beans and got some okra late in eve.

Wed. 11th. Cloudy all day. It dropped rain all day till 5 and rained light shower then. I fixed cowpen fence by outside gate and grated some corn in morn. I cut some weeds and stacked few boards in pasture by cowpen in eve.

Thu. 12th. Bright but hazy. No rain. I went hunting in morn, crippled 2 squirrels but got none. I put up a fork in cowpen at 10. I picked some cotton N of cowpen in eve. Dan here in eve.

Fri. 13th. Bright and warm in morn. I hoed 27 flowers by beech stumps in morn. Nellie and Eliza washed and scoured. I hoed little by Spring gate in eve. It was very warm and sultry in eve and rained a hard quick shower at 11 at night.

Sat. 14th. Warm and bright in morn. I destroyed ant's nest in hearth and finished hoeing all toward Spring gate in morn. I went with Nellie and children to Lucketts' at 2. I parched coffee. Clara and Bud came in eve. It rained a heavy rain at 7 in eve from E.

Sun. 15th. Warm and bright in morn, and thundered far off in eve but didn't rain. Nellie, children and I at Pa's all day. He's gone to Uncle Gus's. We went to hear Mr. Drake preach in eve, it was very warm.

Mon. 16th. Bright and warm and rained a sprinkle from SE at 4 in eve. I hoed flowers on E side, finished all but little by 10. I shelled some seed peas and picked 15 pds cotton here by cowpen here in eve.

Tue. 17th. Bright and warm. I finished hoeing flowers on E side and hoed most of cotton in Plum corner and grated some corn in morn. I gathered and shelled some corn in eve. Bud and Dan came at 4. Very warm in eve.

Wed. 18th. Warm. It sprinkled here at 4 and thundered very heavily in SW. at 5. I went to town in morn. I picked and strung some pepper (the 1st) and picked some cotton here in patch here in eve. Clara came at 4.

Thu. 19th. Warm and bright. I hoed my young tomatoes and picked over cotton in Plum corner by Spring gate in morn and bottled tomatoeseed and picked cotton by beech stump in eve.

Fri. 20th. Bright and hot in morn. Rained 2 light sprinkles in eve. I hoed some in my late whip peas and picked some cotton N of henhouse in morn. I rode to Mr. Primm's at 3 to see if he was going to grind tomorrow.

Sat. 21st. Bright and warm. I took 2 alt pills last night and 1 cin pill this morn. I rehoed flowers by beech stump and fixed oleander bush and grated some corn in morn. Pa here all day. We walked all around in field in eve and saw a cow on Noland Ridge. I picked some whip peas to feed on late in eve.

Sun. 22nd. Warm and bright. Willie and I went to see Mr. D's new ground and on to hunt cattle and got some muscadines. Nellie and Willie went to Mr. D's and Rena and I to Pa's in eve.

Mon. 23rd. Bright and warm in morn and thundered around in eve but didn't rain. I rehoed flowers on E side and picked some cotton in morn. I picked and finished getting over (his) patch in eve. Mr.

Sims here late in eve.

Tue. 24th. Warm and bright. I hoed 2 rows of sugar beans and picked some cotton here in patch in morn. Nellie and I picked 50 pds of cotton in Cherry tree cut next to fence in eve.

Wed. 25th. Warm and rained light in eve. I hoed 2 rows of sugar cane and picked 30 pds of cotton in Cherry tree cut on W side in morn and 20 pds on E side in eve and rain ran me home at 5 1/2. Clara here in eve and took Rena home with her.

Thu. 26th. Warm and bright in morn and threatened rain from 4 to 6 but didn't rain. I picked 70 pds of cotton on W side of Cherry tree cut in morn. Nellie and I went to see a yearling in hole by Susan Turners' house at 1. We picked a few peas for seed but cloud ran us home by 4. I have had toothache for 2 days.

Fri. 27th. Warm and bright in morn and threatened rain in eve but didn't. I picked and finished Cherry cut of cotton by 11 1/2 . Gordon and Alice here to dinner. I picked some seed peas and some pepper in eve.

Sat. 28th. Bright and warm. I went to town, carried 1 bu of corn to Lewis' mill (the 1st.). Lynch spoke.

Sun. 29th. Bright and warm in morn and rained light shower at 3. Nellie, children and I at Pa's all day. Gordon and Alice went home from there at 4. I came home at 3 and went back to Pa's for Nellie and children.

Mon. 30th. Bright, wind from NE. I picked cotton in Dewberry cut in morn. Nellie and children picked here in yard most of day. I picked some seed peas in eve.

Tue. 31st. Warm, cloudy and NE wind. I picked 75 pds of cotton in Dewberry cut in morn. Nellie picked in yard in morn. I picked 50 pds here in patch in eve.
