APRIL 1919

Tue. Apr. 1st. Clear and nearly cold enough for frost in morn and a cold NE wind all day but pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. Willie cleaned off ground on creek and Dud and Wiley W and Joe broke ground today. I stuck peas in new garden in morn.

Wed. 2nd. Bright, nearly clear, and a little frost in morn but wind from SE and warmer and cloudy some in eve late. Willie cleaned up ground on creek and Dud and Wiley W and Joe broke ground there today. I finished sticking peas and hoed the onions in new garden in morn. Bro Dawson here awhile late in eve.

Thu. 3rd. Cloudy and damp S wind all day and sprinkled rain several times in eve and we had a good shower with some thunder from W at 6 to 7 1/2 in eve. Dud and Wiley W and Joe broke ground on creek today and got nearly wet late in eve. Willie cleaned off ground on creek. I finished hoeing onions in new garden in morn and cut blooms out of them.

Fri. 4th. Cloudy most of morn and cool from N and clear and pleasant in eve. Dud and Wiley W and Joe broke ground on creek today and Willie cleaned up ground there. I hoed around pear and fig and pecan trees out E of here in morn and watched chickens out of boat corn there.

Sat. 5th. Bright and cool in morn and warmer in eve from SE. Dud and Wiley W and Joe broke ground on creek in morn and Willie cleaned up ground. I hoed mustard and some Irish potatoes in old garden in morn - hilling them. Willie drove Buck to town in eve.

Sun. 6th. Warm and cloudy and began to rain slowly from SW at 1 in eve and lasted all eve and most of night and hard about midnight with some thunder - a big rain in all and needed too. Nellie and Carmel drove Buck to Dixie's in morn and returned at 2 in eve. We fed in rain late in eve.

Mon. 7th. Warm and cloudy from S in morn and bright most of eve and no rain. Willie and Dud and Wiley got the old red cow and spotted calf out of field early in morn but the red yearling jumped out through Lewis' field and they didn't get him. Willie and I put up posts and wire for 2 bean arbors in new garden in morn. Dud and Wiley didn't plow today, too wet.

Tue. 8th. Bright and warm but cloudy some and a damp wind from S all day and night too. Dud and Wiley plowed on creek, running 2 furrows, too wet to break solidly today. Willie helped me to stick pole and butter beans in new garden in morn. Luster brought Lucile early in morn and dined here.

Wed. 9th. Warm and cloudy and a damp wind from S and rained a hard shower with some thunder at 2 to 3 in eve and began at 11 in night and we had a big washing rain till 2. Dud and Wiley plowed on creek in morn and didn't work in eve. I hoed up ground in old tomatoe patch in field in morn to plant in tomatoes again.

Thu. 10th. We had a flood of rain last night and clear and cool from NW today. Willie worked on watergaps most of day. I hoed up ground in old tomatoe patch in morn and planted some eggplant and radish seed in new garden in eve.

Fri. 11th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from NW. Dud and Wiley broke ground in patches N of here and E of here by 4 in eve and on creek balance of eve. Willie scraped cane stubble N of here today. I hoed up ground in old tomatoe patch in field and planted tomatoes there in morn.

Sat. 12th. Bright, nearly clear, and cooler in morn and warmer in eve. Dud and Wiley W broke ground on creek in morn. Willie planted some watermelons in morn and drove Buck to town in eve. I hoed up ground and planted some tomatoes and watermelons there in morn in old tomatoe patch.

Sun. 13th. Bright, nearly clear, and a beautiful and pleasant day from SW. All went to SS in eve but Nellie and me. Earl and Ernest came back with Carmel and Marion and Lucile and Stella Miller and ate supper here.

Mon. 14th. Bright but some clouds and warm from SW. Dud and Wiley and Joe planted cotton with the planter all day. Willie scraped cane in patch N of here today. I hoed in new garden on E side potatoe bed and lettuce and peas - in morn and replanted cucumbers and thinned squashes in eve.

Tue. 15th. Warm and began to thunder just before day and thundered all day and sprinkled rain some most of morn and began to rain hard just after 12 and lasted all eve - a big washing rain in all. Dud and Wiley and Joe planted cotton all morn and Willie scraped cane stubble in patch N of here and I hoed in new garden in morn. Willie took Lucile to Mrs. James in eve (late) and Mrs. Mary LeSassier died in eve.

Wed. 16th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from NW. Willie came home from Mrs. James' in eve. I hoed around 3 fig trees and 5 pecan trees in morn and cut tops out of onions in new garden in eve.

Thu. 17th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from W of N. Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion drove the grey mules to Lanehart's surry to town to Mrs. Mary LeSassier's burying in morn and returned at 12. Dud and Wiley W broke ground on creek in eve. I hilled Irish potatoes in old garden in morn and hoed potatoe bed in new garden in eve.

Fri. 18th. Bright, nearly clear, and nearly cold enough for frost in morn but warmer in eve. Dud and Wiley W broke ground in morn on creek and planted cotton in field here in eve. Willie scraped cane today. I hilled Irish potatoes in old garden in morn and hoed peas in new garden in eve.

Sat. 19th. Bright, nearly clear, and very cool early in morn and warmer in eve. Dud and Wiley and Joe planted cotton in morn and Dud drove wagon to town in eve. Willie drove Buck to Mrs. James' in morn and brought Minnie home from there at dark. I hoed up ground and planted watermelons there between ditches in field in morn.

Sun. 20th. Bright, nearly clear, and very cool early in morn and warmer in eve. All went to SS in eve but Nellie and me.

Mon. 21st. Bright and cool in morn and warm in eve. Willie and Dud and Wiley W and Joe planted cotton today. I hilled Irish potatoes in old garden in morn and finished them.

Tue. 22nd. Bright, nearly clear, and cool early in morn and warmer in eve. Dud and Wiley W went to Sam Woods burying in morn and gone all day. Willie broke ground on creek with the grey mules today. I hoed in new garden on West side in morn.

Wed. 23rd. Bright, nearly clear, and warmer today. Dud and Wiley W and Joe planted cotton today. Willie hoed his Irish potatoes in patch E of here today. I hoed in new garden in morn.

Thu. 24th. Bright and warm and dry. Dud and Wiley W and Joe finished planting cotton at 9 1/2 in morn and they and Willie planted corn on creek balance of day. I hoed in new garden in morn.

Fri. 25th. Bright and warm and dry. Willie and Dud and Wiley W and Joe planted corn on creek today. I hoed in new garden in morn and finished there.

Sat. 26th. Bright but hazy cloudy all day and a cool wind from E. Willie and Marion and Dud and Wiley planted corn on creek in morn and John Chambers castrated Maud Est's colt there. Willie and Marion drove Buck to town in eve. I hoed my watermelons in tomatoe patch in morn.

Sun. 27th. Cloudy and warmer and a damp wind from S. Gordon dined here and all went to SS in eve but Nellie and Willie (he is not well) and me.

Mon. 28th. Foggy and dropped rain a little early in morn but bright and warm for --- after 9 in morn. Willie barred off corn in patch E of here today with old Ella and Wiley and Dud barred off corn in theirs in field and their hands hoed corn. I hoed in my tomatoe patch in morn.

Tue. 29th. Cloudy and began to rain slowly at 10 1/2 in morn and we had a good little shower at 11 1/2 and quit. Willie barred off corn with Sandy most of day and finished all in patches E and N of here. Dud and Wiley barred off corn today and their hands hoed corn. I finished hoeing tomatoes and replanted them in field in morn.

Wed. 30th. It began to rain at 3 1/2 in morn with thunder and some wind from SW and lasted till 8 in morn - a big washing rain - and bright most of day. We did nothing in morn. Willie set out some yam sets in patch N of here in eve.
