APRIL 1917

Sun. Apr. 1st. Cloudy and a pretty high wind most of day and sprinkled rain some late in eve and we had a little shower with some thunder early in night and wind changed to N. Minnie and Carmel and Marion and Katie James walked to SS in eve. Bro Tom and his 2 little girls dined here.

Mon. 2nd. Bright and cool from N. Dud barred off cane and ran cultivator in Irish potatoes today and Sidney broke ground and Willie cleaned off ground. I hoed and picked grass out of old strawberries in morn.

Tue. 3rd. Bright and nearly cold enough for frost in morn but wind from E and warmer in eve. Dud and Sidney broke ground and Willie cleaned up ground today. I hoed and picked grass out of old strawberries in morn.

Wed. 4th. Cloudy and windy from W all morn and thunder cloud came up from NW and began to rain at 1 and lasted all eve - a big rain in all. Dud and Sidney broke ground in morn and Willie cleaned off ground. I picked grass out of old strawberries in morn. Lewis and Chunk and Earl here at 1 to 3 1/2 in eve.

Thu. 5th. Clear and a very cool W of N wind all day. Dud and Sidney cleaned up ground today. Willie rode Daisie to see pasture at Surgett's and on to Bro Tom's in morn and returned late in eve. I hoed and picked grass out of old strawberries in morn.

Fri. 6th. Clear and about cold enough for a little frost in morn but wind from SW and warmer in eve. Dud and Sidney broke ground and Willie cleaned off ground today. I picked grass out of old strawberries in morn.

Sat. 7th. Cloudy and windy from SW all day and began to rain at dusk and a thunder cloud came up from NW at dark and we had a hard rain with some hail and wind and thunder till 8 at night. Dud and Sidney broke ground in morn. Willie and Marion drove Daisie to town in eve and returned just as rain began. I finished strawberries in morn and repaired floor of front room near fireplace too.

Sun. 8th. Cloudy and a cold wind from W of N all day and wind changed to NE at night. Carmel and Marion and Nellie walked to Wiley's in eve.

Mon. 9th. Bright, nearly clear, and about cold enough for a little frost in morn but wind from E and warmer in eve. Willie and Dud and Sidney rode and drove 20 head of cattle to Surgett's place and put them in a pasture there in morn and broke ground in eve. I put a handle in Charles' ax and patched flower yard pickets in morn.

Tue. 10th. Bright and a little warmer today. Willie and Dud and Sidney planted cotton today. I hoed peas and onions in new garden in morn and got wood and shucked corn and fed in eve.

Wed. 11th. Bright but cloudy some all day and pleasant form SW. Willie and Dud and Sidney planted cotton today. I hoed cucumbers and squashes in new garden in morn.

Thu. 12th. It began to rain at 8 in morn and lasted till 11 and bright in eve and a thunder cloud came up from NW in night and we had rain and some little hail. Willie and Dud and Sidney shucked and shelled a bbl of bread corn in morn and they cleaned up patch E of here in eve. I shelled some seed corn in morn.

Fri. 13th. Cloudy and very cool from W of N and sprinkled rain a little in morn and in eve too. Dud and Sidney cleaned up ground in patch N of here in morn and scraped cane stubble there in eve. Willie rode Daisie in eve and went with Cap D and a negro (they dined here) and drove some cattle from creek to Surgett's pasture. I set out some okra in new garden in morn and made a box and planted some quince seed in it.

Sat. 14th. Clear and very cool from N. Sidney scraped cane stubble in morn. Dud drove wagon to town in morn and carried one bbl of corn and returned at 12 with the meal and 2 bbls flour. Willie rode Daisie and returned at 1 in eve. I patched hearth in front room and found 3 hens' nests in morn.

Sun. 15th. Clear and very cool early in morn but wind from S and warmer in eve. Myrtis and Eddie Ogden here today and they and Carmel and Marion walked to SS in eve and Bro Ellis preached there. Willie and Minnie drove Daisie to see Mrs. A.E. Fugler in morn and returned late in eve.

Mon. 16th. Bright but cloudy some all day and windy from S and lightning in NW at night. Dud and Sidney broke ground after 10 in morn. They finished planting cotton by 10. Willie cleaned off ground today. I hoed beans in new garden in morn and replanted okra and squashes in eve.

Tue. 17th. Bright and warm from S and no rain in sight. Dud and Sidney broke ground in patch E of here today. Willie hoed Irish potatoes in patch N of here today. I hoed beans and peas in new garden in morn and part of onions there too.

Wed. 18th. Bright but cloudy some and warm from S and no rain in sight. Dud and Sidney broke ground in patch E of here and in patch N of here today and finished breaking ground by late in eve. Willie finished hoeing Irish potatoes in morn and made 3 hoe handles in eve. I hoed in new garden in morn and finished there.

Thu. 19th. Bright but some clouds and warm and windy from S. Dud and Sidney barred off corn today. Willie rode Daisie to Surgett's early in morn and he and Cap Donnelly dipped their cattle in morn and Willie barred off corn in gate cut with Ella in eve. I hoed bought strawberries in old garden in morn.

Fri. 20th. Cloudy and began to rain at 9 1/2 in morn and to hail and lasted till 10 and began again at 11 1/2 and lasted most of eve -a big fall of water in all - and quit at dusk. Willie and Dud and Sidney barred off corn most of morn and I hoed in old garden till 9 1/2 in morn.

Sat. 21st. Clear and cool from W of N. Dud and Sidney cut and hauled a wagon load of beansticks and struck all of beans in new garden in morn and I tied the sticks in eve. I patched chicken coops and cut dead limbs out of pecan tree near cotton house in morn. Willie and Dud drove Daisie to town in eve.

Sun. 22nd. Clear and very cool early in morn but a beautiful and pleasant day. Lewis here in morn awhile. Willie and Minnie and Marion and Carl walked to SS in eve. Carmel went home with Annabel James on last Fri eve. Nellie went to Wiley's in eve.

Mon. 23rd. Bright and very cool early in morn but warmer in eve. Willie and Dud and Sidney barred off corn and some hands hoed corn today. I sawed down the big red fig tree in old garden and planted some ---------- and okra there in morn.

Tue. 24th. Bright and cool early in morn but a pleasant day. Willie and Dud and Sidney and some hands hoed corn today. I hoed onions and cucumbers and squashes in new garden in morn.

Wed. 25th. Bright and cool early in morn and pleasant most of day. Willie and Dud and Sidney and some hands hoed corn today. I hoed peas and beans in new garden in morn.

Thu. 26th. Bright and warmer today. Willie and Dud and Sidney and hands hoed corn till in eve and finished first planting and Dud and Sidney scraped sweet potatoes in patch E of here in eve and Willie rode Daisie to creek and put 6 cows in pasture (to dip). I hoed in new garden till 9 1/2 in morn and finished there and I hoed strawberries in old garden till 11 1/4.

Fri. 27th. Bright but cloudy some and warm and windy from S. Willie and Dud and Sidney planted corn today. I hoed strawberries in old garden in morn.

Sat. 28th. A thundercloud passed around from W to SW at sunrise and sprinkled rain a little here and bright and windy from S most of day. Willie and Marion and Dud dipped our cattle early in morn and Dud and Sidney scraped sweet potatoes in patch E of here by 12. Willie drove Daisie to town in eve. I packed cane fodder from potatoe house and put in new garden early in morn.

Sun. 29th. Bright and warm and windy from SW and no rain. Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion went to SS in eve.

Mon. 30th. Cloudy some but bright and warm and windy from SW and thundered out W of here in eve. Willie and Dud and Sidney planted corn today. I replanted cucumbers and hoed dirt from onions in new garden and planted some eggplant in old garden in morn.
