APRIL 1916

Sat. Apr. 1st. Warm and cloudy and a damp wind from E of S all day and rained good deal most of night with some thunder from SW. Willie and Dud repaired water gaps near creek in morn and Willie and Minnie drove Sandy to town in eve. I hoed most of old garden in morn and got wood and water and fed and hunted eggs in eve.

Sun. 2nd. Cloudy and very cool from W. I walked to Wiley's and back in morn. Willie and Minnie and children went to SS in eve and Nellie and Carl to Wiley's.

Mon. 3rd. Cloudy and no sun and cool from NW all day. Willie rode Sandy to hunt cattle in morn and he and Dud cleaned up ground in eve. Dud cleaned up ground in morn. I packed some manure and put around old apple pear tree and hoed around it in morn and I planted some bush beans in new garden in eve.

Tue. 4th. Cloudy and no sun and cool all day. Willie and Dud broke ground in Sims' bottom today. I planted some butter and pole beans and okra and squash and cucumbers and tomatoes and onion seed in new garden today.

Wed. 5th. Cloudy some but bright and warmer today. Willie and Dud finished breaking land in morn and Dud harrowed ground for cotton with Frilby and Julia (mule) in eve. Cap D ate dinner here and he and Willie hunted cattle here all eve but didn't find all of them. I brought 10 eggs from beyond Dud's house and put them under a speckled hen in a coop early in morn. I got wood for Leah to wash and drove down 4 tall stakes in old garden by 4 rotten posts.

Thu. 6th. Cloudy and cool and dropped rain at 11 in morn and we had a big rain in night with some thunder. Dud harrowed ground for cotton most of day and finished it. Willie and Cap D hunted and found all of our cattle in morn and Willie and Marion scraped cane and Irish potatoes in patch N of here in eve. I hoed in garden (old) in morn and took 1 pill just before dinner.

Fri. 7th. Cloudy and cool from NW all morn and bright all eve and clear at night. Willie and Dud scraped cane stubble in morn and Dud in eve. Cap D and a negro came at 11 in morn and dined here and Willie rode Sandy in eve and helped them to drive away 7 head of cattle which Willie sold to Cap. I walked in field early in morn and got a s'k of pine straw and I shelled some bread corn.

Sat. 8th. Bright and a cold W of N wind all day and clear and calm at night and didn't quite frost. Willie replanted watermelon in morn and he and Marion drove Sandy to town in eve. Dud scraped cane stubble in morn and finished it. I planted some watermelons and peppers in field in morn.

Sun. 9th. Bright, nearly clear, and about cold enough for frost in morn but wind blew a little all last night and a little today from NW. Willie and Minnie and children went to SS in eve.

Mon. 10th. Bright but some clouds and a little frost in morn but didn't seem to hurt vegetation. Willie and Dud barred off corn today. I hoed Irish potatoes and onions in NE corner of garden in morn and hunted eggs and got wood and water and fed in eve.

Tue. 11th. Bright but some clouds and warmer from S. Willie planted cotton with a planter and Marion harrowed ground ahead of him with Sandy and Dud barred off corn with Julia. I hoed in old garden in morn and pulled up weeds around a red fig tree in old garden in eve.

Wed. 12th. Bright and pleasant from S. Dud barred off corn and Willie and Marion planted cotton till 4 in eve and finished and Willie rode Sandy across creek to get hands to hoe corn tomorrow late in eve. I dug dirt off beans and other vegetables in new garden on morn.

Thu. 13th. Bright and warm. Dud and Dickie barred off corn and a lot of hands hoed corn today. Willie rode Sandy to Joe Mills' burying in eve. I dug dirt off pole and butter beans in new garden and hoed onions and part of peas there in morn.

Fri. 14th. Bright and warm. Willie had hands hoeing corn today and Dud and Dickie barred off corn today. Marion rode Sandy in Elmwood pasture hunting a cow and young calf in morn. Nellie and little Nellie drove Nancy to town in eve. I finished hoeing peas in new garden in morn and patched a pair of pants in eve.

Sat. 15th. Warm and bright all day and rained late in night. Dud and Dickie finished barring off oldest corn in morn and some hands hoed corn in morn. Willie drove Sandy to town in eve. I planted some tomatoes and Tom Watson watermelons in field in morn.

Sun. 16th. It began to rain at 4 in morn and lasted till 7 - a big fall of water but didn't seem to wash ground much - and cloudy all morn and bright in eve. Willie and Minnie and children went to SS in eve and Bro Ellis preached there.

Mon. 17th. Bright and warm and no rain. Willie rode Sandy and Dud Julia and went to Elmwood pasture and drove some of our cattle out to creek in morn and they put up arbors for beans in new garden in eve. Marion and I put up milk shelf and 2 calf stakes in new cow pen in morn.

Tue. 18th. Bright and warm from S and no rain. Dud and Sophia drove Julia to town in morn to see Dr. Magruder and Dud ran cultivator on some ground for planting corn in eve. Willie and Marion hoed corn in morn and Willie shucked and shelled some seed corn in eve. I tied bean poles to wire on all 3 bean arbors in new garden in morn.

Wed. 19th. Bright but cloudy and windy from S all day but no rain. Willie and Marion and Dud planted corn today. I hoed bush beans and squashes and cucumbers in new garden in morn and hoed some beans there in eve. I had vertigo in night and took 1 pill in night.

Thu. 20th. Bright all morn but cloudy some and windy from S and cloudy all eve and thunder in W most of eve and rained a little here late in eve and a thundercloud came up from NW just after dark and we had a good little shower then and cleared off right away. Willie and Marion and Dud planted corn all day. I hoed okra and tomatoes and some pole beans in new garden today.

Fri. 21st. Clear and a little cool from NW and no rain in sight. Willie and Dud and Marion finished planting corn in morn and Dud barred off corn in 2nd planting in eve and Willie and Marion and I shucked and shelled some bread corn in eve. I finished hoeing beans in new garden by 8 1/2 in morn and hilled Irish potatoes in old garden and dug around all of onions on East side of old garden by 10 1/2 in morn.

Sat. 22nd. Bright, nearly clear, and cool early in morn and a pleasant day. Dud drove Julia and Frilby to wagon to town early in morn and carried 2 bus of corn and Marion went on wagon too and Willie rode Sandy and Dud returned at 12 and Willie and Marion returned at 1 1/2 in a new buggy. I planted most of tomatoe patch in field in watermelons in morn.

Sun. 23rd. Bright and warm till late in eve and clouded up from NW and lightning in NW at night. Willie and Minnie and all of children but Carl went to SS in eve. Nellie went to Wiley's in eve and Carl stayed here with me.

Mon. 24th. Cloudy some all day and dropped rain in morn and in eve too but not enough to wet anything. Willie and Dud ran cultivators om corn middles today. Minnie and Marion drove Julia (mule) to town in morn and Dr. Miller put in 2 front teeth for Marion and they returned at 1 1/2 in eve. I hoed onions and peas in new garden and hoed the row of 8 peach trees in patch E of here in morn by 10 1/2.

Tue. 25th. Bright and a little cool from NE. Willie and Dud rain cultivators on corn middles with Sandy and Frilby. I hoed 11 young peach trees just E of house in morn and went to creek with Marion and little Wiley in eve.

Wed. 26th. Cloudy and cool and dropped rain some in morn and in eve too and wind from NE. Willie and Dud ran cultivators on corn middles with Sandy and Frilby all day. I got wood for Leah to wash early in morn and hoed the 4 rows of Tom Watson watermelons and one row of cantelopes in old tomatoe patch in morn.

Thu. 27th. Bright but some clouds and cool. Willlie and Dud barred off cotton today. I hoed over most of old garden in morn and got wood and water and fed in eve.

Fri. 28th. Bright and cool and dry. Willie and Dud ran cultivators in corn. I hoed over watermelon patch and replanted it in morn. A pecan agent (Forest) came late in eve and stayed all night.

Sat. 29th. Bright, nearly clear, and very cool early in morn but warmer in eve from SE. The agent Forest left early in morn. Willie ran cultivator in sugar cane in morn. Dud scraped sweet potatoes in morn. Willie drove Julia (mule) and Frilby to new buggy to town in eve. I hoed tomatoes in field in morn.

Sun. 30th. Bright and warmer from SE and windy most of day. Willie and Minnie and children went to SS in eve. Lila and Steve and Bernice ate supper here.
