APRIL 1914

Wed. Apr. 1st. Cloudy and damp all morn and bright and warm all eve. Willie and Dud broke ground all day. I hoed Irish potatoes and peas in morn.

Thu. 2nd. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from NE all day. Willie and Dud broke ground today. I hoed strawberry middles in morn - all but 5 - and drew water for washing and horses too. Mrs. Lanehart gave birth to a stillborn son in eve and Nellie there in eve till dark.

Fri. 3rd. Bright and hazy clouds all day but pleasant. Willie and Dud broke ground all day. I hoed in garden in morn - beans and onions.

Sat. 4th. Hazy cloudy all day and a little cool. Willie and Dud broke ground in morn and finished at 11 1/2. Willie drove Sandy to town in eve and Carmel and Charles went with him. I hoed onions in garden in morn and finished them. Joe Miller came at 11 in morn and left at 1 1/2 in eve.

Sun. 5th. Bright and pleasant from NE. Carmel and Marion and Charles dined at Wiley's. Willie and Minnie and children walked to SS in eve. I walked to Wiley's and back in eve.

Mon. 6th. Bright and pleasant from S. Willie and Wiley drove some of our cattle from Elmwood and put in our pasture by 10 in morn and Dud barred off stubble cane by then and he and Willie planted corn balance of day. Dud opened the ground with the mules and Willie dropped the corn and covered with Sandy to harrow. I cut and stacked sticks and stuck peas in garden in morn and some in eve too.

Tue. 7th. Cloudy some but bright and warm from S all day and rained a little late in night. Willie and Dud planted corn today as on yesterday. I hoed up ground in pumpkin hollow E of here in morn to plant beans and okra there.

Wed. 8th. A thunder cloud came up from W at 6 1/2 in morn and we had a good hard rain till 7 1/2 and another came up at 10 in morn and we had a shower then and very cool and cloudy from NW all eve and night too. Willie and Dud planted corn till 10 in morn and all eve. Carmel went home with Mrs. Mathis on yesterday and came back this morn. I cut sticks and stuck some peas in garden in morn and some in eve too.

Thu. 9th. Bright, nearly clear, and wind cold from W of N. Willie and Dud planted corn today and finished 2nd planting. I cut and packed sticks and stuck some peas in garden.

Fri. 10th. Clear early in morn and frost enough to scorch tender vegetation but wind from SE and cloudy and warmer in eve and rained some. Willie scraped Irish potatoes in bean hollow and Dud barred off corn in patch E of here today. I stuck peas in garden till 9 in morn and finished and I planted some okra and beans in pumpkin hollow till 4 in eve.

Sat. 11th. Cloudy and a damp breeze from S and we had a shower at 9 1/2 in morn and a thunder cloud came up from W at 12 1/2 and rained a slow shower till 2 3/4 and bright late in eve. Willie and Dud barred off corn in patch E of here in morn and finished there. Willie drove Sandy to town after 3 in eve. Dud and Dago rode Maud Est and Frilby late in eve. I planted some butter beans and okra in pumpkin hollow in morn.

Sun. 12th. Cloudy and cool from N all day and night too. Nellie at Wiley's all day and Charles too. Willie and Carmel and Marion walked to SS in eve.

Mon. 13th. Cloudy and sprinkled rain a little in morn and bright in eve. Willie barred off corn with Ella and Dud harrowed new pine hollow today. I planted some bell pepper and tomatoe seed in old tomatoe patch in field in morn and planted some butter beans in pumpkin hollow in eve and finished there.

Tue. 14th. Bright and cool from N and no sun. Willie and Dud barred off corn today. I hoed up some of tomatoe patch in Sims' bottom and planted some cucumbers there in morn and I patched a coop in eve.

Wed. 15th. Bright and pleasant from W and dry. Willie and Dud barred off corn with the mules today. I hoed up ground in old tomatoe patch and planted two rows of pepper in morn and shelled some seed corn in eve.

Thu. 16th. Bright and pleasant from SW. Willie and Dud barred off corn in morn and Dud in eve too and Willie and Minnie drove Sandy to town in eve and had Carl's picture taken. I hoed up ground in old tomatoe patch in morn and shucked corn and fed and chipped pine in eve.

Fri. 17th. Bright and warm and dry from S. Willie and Dud and Leah and Sophia and Marion began in morn and hoed all of corn and stubble cane in patch E of here and some in Gate cut today. I hoed up some ground in Sims' bottom and planted some squashes there in morn. Bro Ellis dined here and left at 2 and went to Wiley's. I shucked corn and fed in eve.

Sat. 18th. Warm and cloudy from SW all morn and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 2 in eve and we had a big washing rain till 4 and slowly balance of eve and till in night. Willie and Dud hoed corn in morn. Carmel and Minnie and Charles and Steve and Ernest and I went fishing in morn and returned at 12 1/4.

Sun. 19th. Bright and cool from N and no rain in sight. Willie sick today and took 3 pills in morn and lay in bed most of day and suffered with headache late in eve till 8 1/2 in night. Nellie and Minnie and children walked to SS in eve and Bro Ellis preached there.

Mon. 20th. Bright and cool and no rain in sight. Willie and Dud fixed water gaps on creek early in morn and Willie rode Sandy to Elmwood pastures and saw 3 head of our cattle left in there and Willie and Dud hoed corn in eve. I hoed up some ground in old tomatoe patch in morn and shucked and shelled some bread corn in eve.

Tue. 21st. Bright and cool early in morn and pleasant balance of day. Willie and Dud and some hands hoed corn today. I hoed potatoes and peas in garden in morn and shucked and shelled some bread corn in eve. Minnie and Carmel and Charles and Carl at Wiley's most of day helping to put up wall paper.

Wed. 22nd. Cloudy some all day but no rain. Willie and Dud and some hands hoed corn today. I hoed winter onions and bush beans on N side of garden in morn and shucked and shelled some bread corn in eve. Minnie and Charles at Wiley's all day helping to put up wall paper.

Thu. 23rd. Warm and cloudy and a damp breeze from SE most of day and rained a little shower from SW late in eve and clear all night. Willie and Dud and some hands hoed corn today. I hoed middles in strawberries in garden and picked a small bucket of berries there in morn and I shucked and shelled some bread corn in eve. Gussie D stayed here at night.

Fri. 24th. Bright and warm in morn and rained around in thunder showers some in eve and we had a hard little one at 4 1/2. Willie and Dud and some hands hoed corn in morn and finished last of corn and Willie and Dud and Marion planted some pindars and some corn in eve. Marion and Carmel and I shelled one p'k of pindars in morn and I winnowed some bread corn in eve.

Sat. 25th. Bright and warm most of day but rained around some in little thunder showers at 12 to 4 in eve but only sprinkled here. Dud scraped planted cane and some yams in morn and rode Trilby in eve. Willie and Marion drove the mules and wagon to town in morn and returned at 1 in eve. Willie was run over by the wagon. I drove up Rabbit (cow) from pasture early in morn (Marion helped me) and ----- gave birth to a heifer calf near garden at 10 in morn. I patched a pair of pants in eve.

Sun. 26th. Bright but cloudy some and warmer and a damp breeze from S and rained around in little thunder showers most of eve but only sprinkled a little here. Nellie and Carl went to Wiley's in eve and Minnie and Carmel and Marion and Charles walked to SS in eve. I picked some strawberries in morn and Marion carried them to Wiley's.

Mon. 27th. Warm and cloudy and a damp S wind all day but only dropped rain a little and rained some late in night. Dud ran cultivator on corn and cane middles in patch E of here with Sandy and finished late in eve. Willie walked and hunted our cattle on creek in morn and in eve too. I set out some tomatoe plants in old tomatoe patch in morn.

Tue. 28th. A thunder cloud came up from NW at 3 1/2 in morn and we had a big washing rain till 5 and slowly most of day and till in the night and a big washing rain in all. Willie rode Sandy to hunt our cattle on creek in eve. We didn't work today on account of rain.

Wed. 29th. Cloudy and misted rain a little in morn and bright and pleasant in eve. Willie rode Sandy and found all of our cattle on creek in morn and he fixed water gaps in eve. Dud cut briars and sprouts on SE side of oat patch.

Thu. 30th. Cloudy all day and no rain but a damp breeze from NE and sprinkled rain a little in N. Willie and Dud hoed our watermelon patch in morn and hoed planted yams on H ridge in eve. I set out some tomatoes in old tomatoe patch and planted some bell pepper there and some squash too in morn.
