APRIL 1904

Fri. Apr. 1st. Warm and cloudy some but bright and sun shined most of day and calm and quite warm in eve and thundered around some late in eve but no rain here. Willie broke ground in Sims' corner today with Joe and mule and Howard cleaned up ground there. I hoed up some ground in hollow in orchard in morn and sowed some okra seed broadcast over it and hoed it all over again in eve. I sweat great deal in morn and in eve too and took off my flannels today. Ed Richardson here in eve assessing.

Sat. 2nd. It rained some W of here last night but none here and cloudy and cool all day with a NE breeze and dropped rain a little at 9 in morn and again at 4 in eve. Willie broke ground in Sims' corner with Joe and mule most of morn and Howard cleaned up ground there. I scraped all of Irish potatoes in old cow pen corner of orchard by 11 3/4 in morn. Willie rode Frilby to town in eve and returned before sunset and Wiley drove Ella to buggy to town in eve. I got wood and water and fed and Minnie and I milked in eve. Nellie and Carmell staid at Wiley's at night.

Sun. 3rd. It sprinkled rain some before day in morn but cool and bright. Wiley rode Frilby to his Pa's in morn and Rena and her 2 children here today and B C came at 9 in morn and Gussie came at 11 and all went to SS in eve but Nellie and I and Marion and little Wiley. Willie Smith and family stopped here a few minutes at 4 in eve.

Mon. 4th. Bright, nearly clear, and quite cool early in morn and pleasant in sunshine after 9 in morn. Willie broke new ground in 1st Sims' corner all day with Joe and mule. Howard didn't work today - said he was sick. I cleaned off some ground ahead of Willie and picked out a great many roots behind him all morn and I hoed some of peach trees in hollow in orchard most of eve. I got wood and water and fed and helped Willie to milk. Nellie and Bernice and Carmell walked to Lanehart's in eve.

Tue. 5th. Bright and cool early in morn but a damp breeze from S and clouded up after 9 in morn and thundered in NW late in eve and sprinkled rain some here at 5 1/2 to 7 1/2 in eve. Willie broke ground in big hollow in Sims' corner in morn with Joe and mule and Howard worked on a ditch and cleaned up ground there and Willie barred off corn with Ella and Howard with Joe on H ridge and in Gate cut most of eve. I hoed peach trees in hollow in orchard and planted a row of squashes by bean arbor by 11 in morn and I carried some Red eating potatoes to Wiley's by 11 3/4. B C came early in morn and got some Queens and Red potatoes to plant. I had a headache most of morn and till 3 in eve and it got better then. I hoed about 1/2 of garden in eve. Willie and I milked in a slow rain in eve but didn't get wet.

Wed. 6th. Cloudy and cool and misted rain a little till 9 in morn and bright and sun shined balance of day and pleasant. Howard hoed corn today in Gate cut and Willie broke ground in big bottom in Sims' corner all day with Joe and mule. I cleaned off some ground and worked on a ditch for Willie all morn and I hoed balance of garden in eve.

Thu. 7th. Bright but some clouds all morn and a damp breeze from S and cloudy all eve and a dark thundercloud (with thunder) staid NW of here all eve after 1 in eve and began to rain here in little showers at 5 1/2 and lasted on till 9 at night and a big thundercloud came up then from NW and we had a good soaking rain till 10 and much needed too. Willie broke ground in big bottom of Sims' corner with Joe and mule till 9 1/2 in morn and barred off corn with mule balance of day. Howard hoed corn all day in Gate cut and on H ridge and Rose hoed too in morn. I hoed corn on hilltop of H ridge till 11 in morn and I drove Joe to buggy and carried 2 3/4 bu corn to Ogden's store and exchanged for meal at 2 to 3 3/4 in eve and got wood and water and fed and Willie and I milked late in eve in sprinkles of rain but didn't get wet.

Fri. 8th. Bright, nearly clear, in morn and cool from N all day but cloudy some in eve and dropped rain a little late in eve. Willie and Howard put up some wire fence on E side of yard in fig orchard part in morn and Willie broke ground in big bottom of Sims' corner with Ella in eve and finished there and Howard harrowed ground for cotton with Joe in eve in SW corner. I cut up some wood and put up a bean arbor in orchard (a single row of forks between rows of beans) in morn and I planted some tomatoe seed in hills (56) in Cane hollow SE from hayhouse in eve.

Sat. 9th. Bright and sun shined most of day and a very cool wind all day from N of W and calm and clear at night. Howard sick and didn't work. Willie harrowed some ground out SE of hayhouse (beyond road) for cotton with Joe in morn and he rode Frilby to town in eve. I got wood and water for Rose to wash early in morn and I planted some tomatoes and squashes and cucumbers in Cane hollow out SE of hayhouse by 11 1/4 in morn. Wiley and family drove Joe to Jack D's in eve. I got wood and water and fed and Minnie helped me to milk in eve. Gordon brought some tomatoe plants in eve and he helped me to set them out in garden. I fed Wiley's cows and hogs after sunset.

Sun. 10th. Clear and a little frost in morn and a cool breeze from W most of day but pleasant after 9 in morn. Nellie and Carmell and Willie walked to Clara's in morn and Willie returned at 2 in eve and Nellie and Carmell late in eve. Tom Morris and wife and little girl and Miss Em Boatner came at 11 3/4 in morn and here till late in eve. Wiley and family returned from his Pa's at 5 1/2 in eve.

Mon. 11th. Clear and quite cool early in morn but a breeze from SW most of day and pleaant after 9 in morn. Howard harrowed ground for cotton all day with Joe in SW corner and in locust ground there and in Sims' corner. Willie barred off cotton today with Ella in Cherry cut and in Sims' corner and Rose and Hannah hoed corn on H ridge and in Cherry cut today and I hoed with them all morn and I got wood and water and fed and drove up Guernsey (cow) with a bull calf (born on this morn) from cow pasture by 5 in eve and Willie and I milked late in eve.

Tue. 12th. Bright but some clouds and cool in morn and got dark cloudy from N at 11 in morn and a cool breeze from N and nearly clear most of eve. We began early in morn and planted cotton (our first) all day. Willie carried seed to field with Ella to cart and opened with her and Hannah sowed seed and I helped her all morn and Howard covered with Joe to harrow. We planted in locust ground and SW corner. B C came with a wagon at 2 in eve and got 4 bbls of cotton seed to plant. I got wood and water and fed and milked (8 cows) in eve.

Wed. 13th. Clear and quite cool early in morn and a calm and dry day. We planted cotton all morn as on yesterday morn in SW corner and in Sims' corner and finished our first planting by 11 1/2 in morn. Willie barred off sugar cane in 2nd Cane hollow and some corn in Sims' corner in eve with Ella and Howard and Hannah scraped sugar cane in 2nd Cane hollow in eve. I hoed some in garden and got wood and water and fed and milked most of cows in eve.

Thu. 14th. Clear and cool early in morn but a breeze all day from SW and warm in eve. Willie barred off cotton all morn and part of eve in Sims' corner with Ella and finished all of our old corn. Howard and Hannah hoed sugar cane in 2nd Cane hollow and finished there at 10 in morn and hoed corn balance of day in Sims' corner. I cut sprouts all morn in Sims' corner (in the corn) and didn't finish them and I hoed in garden and got wood and water and fed and helped Willie to milk in eve.

Fri. 15th. Cloudy and warm early in morn and bright and warm after 10 in morn from SW. Willie and Minnie drove Joe to town early in morn and Minnie staid there all day attending teachers' examination and Willie returned at 11 3/4 in morn and went back in eve and he and Minnie returned at 8 1/2 at night. Howard and Hannah hoed corn in Sims' corner today. I got wood and water for Rose to wash early in morn and I cut sprouts in corn in Sims' corner till 9 1/2 in morn and finished then and I hilled Irish potatoes in cow pen corner till 11 1/4 and again in eve and finished them at 4 1/2 and I got wood and water and fed and milked all of cows (8) late in eve.

Sat. 16th. Cloudy and damp from SW early in morn and wind changed to NW at 9 in morn and quite cool and cloudy from there all eve but no rain today. Willie and Minnie drove Joe to town early in morn and Minnie there all day and Willie went on to Aunt Mary's and they returned at dusk. Minnie passed all right. Howard hoed corn in Sims' corner in morn and Hannah washed for Rena. I cut down weeds and bushes in hollow W of flower yard by 11 in morn and I got wood and water and milked in eve. I had a sick stomach all eve and part of night. Bernice here all night.

Sun. 17th. Cloudy and quite cool all morn with a little breeze from NE and thundered in NW at 8 to 10 in morn and dropped rain here at 11 and bright and warmer in eve. Willie rode Frilby to Clara's early in morn and Buddy came back with him at 10 in morn and Joe Miller and Allen came at 10 1/2 and Wiley and Rena and baby came then too and all dined here but Allen - he went to Lewis'. Nellie and Bernice and Clara and Effie and Tigner walked to Ogden's in morn and returned late in eve. Wiley and Rena and baby and Willie and Carmell walked to SS in eve. Mrs Lanehart and little Nora here late in eve. I had looseness of bowels on yesterday and today and my old complaint in head and throat and wheezing and shortness of breath which I have had for more than a week but I slept well at night.
