APRIL 1903

Wed. Apr. 1st. Bright and pleasant from S. Willie and Howard and I planted corn today with Joe and mule as on yesterday and we finished H ridge by 8 in morn and old Cane hollow by 3 1/2 in eve and planted balance of eve in 2nd Cane hollow. I burned up the nests of 3 hens sitting under wagon shed (full of lice) at 1 to 2 1/2 in eve and got wood and water and fed late in eve. Nellie and Carmell and Rena and Bernice and little Wiley and Nat walked to Clara's in morn and returned late in eve.

Thu. 2nd. Bright and pleasant from SW all day but some clouds and wind was damp. Willie and Howard and I planted corn all day in water hole cut and in 2nd Cane hollow and Pine corner and in SW corner. Willie opened with 1 furrow with mule and I drilled corn and Howard covered with Joe to harrow running once to row most of time. Bernice here all night.

Fri. 3rd. Bright but cloudy some and warm all morn and we had a little shower (enough to run off house) at 11 1/2 to 12 from W and wind changed to W of N then and clear and a high cold wind all eve. Willie and Howard and I planted corn all morn till 11 in SW corner and in locust ground and finished our first planting. Willie barred off sugar cane in 2nd Cane hollow and Howard scraped dirt off of all of patch there in eve and Willie plowed up some ground in circling hollow in 3rd Cane hollow for watermelons in eve. I cut up some pecan wood in orchard at corner of wire fence and threw over fence and burned off some sugar cane fodder in eve. I had a little fever all eve and had it pretty hot all night with my cold (or grippe).

Sat. 4th. Bright, nearly clear, and chilly early in morn but pleasant in sun after 9 in morn with a breeze from E of N most of day. We put our dry cattle in cow pasture late yesterday eve and put our milk cows in early this morn. Willie barred off all of our sugar cane stubble in orchard and broke up some ground there for beans and okra with Joe and mule to B plow and finished at 10 in morn and broke ground in Gate cut balance of day. Howard scraped cane stubble in morn and hoed in flower yard most of eve. I hoed around 22 peach trees and 2 apples in hollow in orchard in morn and I hoed our Irish potatoes in garden and planted some bush beans and tomatoes there in eve. I was feverish late in eve but rested well at night.

Sun. 5th. Bright and chilly early in morn but a breeze from S and pleasant in sunshine after 10 in morn. I walked to Wiley's early in morn and he went to his Pa's and Rena and Bernice and baby came back with me at 9 1/2 and they and Tigner D dined here. All of us went to Sunday School in eve but Rena and baby and they stopped at Lewis'. Dixie and her children were there. I am good deal better of grippe today and rested well all night.

Mon. 6th. Cloudy all day and looked like rain but bright and sun shined some and wind from S. Willie broke ground in Gate cut and in Cherry cut with Dan and mule most of day and Howard scraped cane stubble in orchard all day. I fixed everything in barn for Seymour to get out some seed corn early in morn and I cut some yams which Sims gave to us and I planted 4 rows of them just E of hayhouse at 11 3/4. Seymour and 2 Negroe boys brought 18 bu of oats in a wagon at 9 in morn and got out seed corn for Wyoming till late in eve and I helped them all eve and they got out 10 bus. and I gave Seymour some yam seed. I was very feverish at night with grippe but rested well.

Tue. 7th. Bright but cloudy some all day and warm from S. Willie broke ground in home field all day with Dan and mule and Howard scraped cane stubble in orchard most of day and finished it late in eve and helped me to plant a few potatoes then. I planted the Sims' yams all day in patch E of hayhouse and finished all of the yams but about 1/2 peck. Rena and children and Lila and Edna and Ernest Lee here late in eve. I didn't have fever today and rested and slept well at night.

Wed. 8th. Cloudy and misted rain some till 9 in morn from NW and bright and nearly clear and very warm all eve and a thunder cloud came up in sight in NW and N late in eve and at night but didn't get here. Willie broke ground all day in home field with Dan and mule and Howard cleaned up ground in first corner in Sims' field all day. Gordon came late in eve and brought some mail and tomatoe plants and he shucked and shelled 1/2 bu of seed corn before sunset. Minnie and Carmell and baby spent day at Wiley's. I was feverish late in eve and sweat a great deal all eve for it was very warm but I rested well all night.

Thu. 9th. Foggy till 9 in morn and bright and calm and warm balance of day. Howard broke ground in Luckett field with Joe and Dan in morn and with Joe and Goulden in eve. Willie tried to break ground with Ella and Jim till 9 in morn but old Jim was so slow till he quit then and planted his watermelons in 3rd Cane hollow by 12 and he broke ground with Dan and Ella in eve. I planted potatoes (red yams and Queens) in patch E of hayhouse most of day and finished all but about 1 3/4 of long rows on W side of patch. I sweat till I was wet in eve for the weather is quite warm and I rested well all night.

Fri. 10th. Cloudy some all day and warm but a breeze from S and bright most of day. Willie broke ground in 3rd Cane hollow with Dan and Ella and Howard broke ground with Joe and Goulden in Luckett field today. Nellie and Minnie washed on machine early in morn. I planted Queens in patch E of hayhouse till 10 1/4 in morn and finished and I repaired Joe's stable by 12 and I burned up some lice at cart shed and packed and cut up good deal of wood and drew water in eve.

Sat. 11th. Warm and cloudy some all day but bright and a breeze from SW and a thunder cloud came up from E of N at midnight but only dropped a little here. Willie and Howard broke ground in morn as on yesterday and Willie and Buddy drove Joe to town in eve and returned at 7 3/4. Howard hoed in flower yard most of eve. I hoed a little patch of Irish potatoes (6 rows) in old cow pen corner (near woods) early in morn and planted 3 rows of okra there and I planted 2 long rows of butter and pole beans near wire gap in orchard by 11 1/2. I hoed in garden part of eve and got wood and water and fed and milked Jersey cow late in eve.

Sun. 12th. Warm and cloudy some all day and a damp breeze from S but bright most of day. Bernice staid here last night and she and I walked to Wiley's at 8 1/2 to 9 1/2 in morn and Wiley and Rena and both children came at 10 1/2 and here till in eve and Mr. Leggett here too and Gussie and Viola came at 11 1/2 and all of us but Nellie and Rena and the 2 babies walked to Sunday School in eve. Lewis and all of his family and Sims here late in eve and had music (piano) and singing till nearly sunset.

Mon. 13th. It thundered and rained around some last night about midnight and rained a sprinkle here and cloudy but bright today and a cool breeze from NW all day and night too. Willie broke ground today in first corner of Sims' field with Dan and mule and Howard cleaned up ground there all day. Old Guernsey's heifer calf, 1 year old but weaned, didn't come up from cow pasture on yesterday eve and I rode Joe early in morn and hunted it till 9 in morn and brought Joe home and walked back in cow pasture and hunted till 11 1/2 and again most of eve but didn't find it. I began to take Hall's Cattarrh cure again in morn.

Tue. 14th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from W of N and dry. Willie broke ground in first corner of Sims' field today with Dan and mule and Howard cleaned up ground there. I walked in our cow pasture and in Lewis' pasture early in morn hunting Guernsey's heifer calf but didn't find it but I saw tracks where our Spring branch goes out of pasture at creek about the size of hers and I came home at 9 1/2 and planted 6 rows of okra in orchard by 11 3/4. Willie fired pine brush and cane in lower part of first corner in Sims' field at 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 in eve and I went out there with him and I hoed onions in garden at 2 3/4 to 5 in eve.

Wed. 15th. Bright and very cool early in morn and a breeze from W of N and getting too dry. Willie broke ground in hollow in first corner of Sims' field all day with Dan and mule and Howard cleaned up ground there. I rode Joe early in morn and went across creek into Chambers' field hunting Guernsey's calf and came back across creek and found her in Sims' Quarters and I drove her back into our pasture and got home at 9 and I planted 3 rows of red potatoes in orchard by 11 3/4 and I planted 4 more there in eve and finished them about 4 1/2 and I planted some red pepper in garden by 5 1/4 and got wood and water and fed.

Thu. 16th. Bright and cool and dry from N. Willie broke ground with Dan and mule in first corner of Sims' field in morn and Howard cleaned up ground there most of day. I repaired calf pasture fence from hog pen to big road in morn by 11 1/4. Willie and I winnowed and measured and sacked some peas at hayhouse most of eve. Nellie and Carmell walked to B C's in morn and returned late in eve.

Fri. 17th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool and dry from N. Willie broke ground in first corner of Sims' field most of day and Howard cleaned up ground there. I walked to Wiley's early in morn and got 1/2 bar of soap and shot and killed the black dragging boar hog on Spring branch and got wood and some water for Nellie and Minnie to wash and I repaired some of calf pasture fence in SW corner and finished last of it by 11 1/4. I hoed around some fruit trees N of barn and some little peach trees in hollow S of potatoe house in eve. Lewis and West drove his 2 mares and old Jim to our wagon to town in morn and got a load of lumber to build a church.

Sat. 18th. Bright but cloudy some and a damp breeze from S and thundered in NW at 7 to 8 1/2 at night and dropped rain a little here. Howard drove Ella and Jack to wagon and carried 25 bus. of peas and Willie got a Wyoming wagon to carry 11 bus. and they carried them to town and Willie rode Joe and went and sold 25 bus. to F D Lewis at $1.40 per bu. and 10 to Ernest Cropper and 1 to George Fugler at same price and they returned in eve and Howard brought back some lumber for church. Lewis put up some of frame of it today. Minnie and baby and Rena and her 2 children drove old Jim and Wiley went on horseback to Jack D's in morn and Wiley came back late in eve. I cut down weeds and briars and bushes in hollow W of our house most of morn and some on E side in eve.

Sun. 19th. Cloudy some but bright and a pleasant breeze from SW but dry and no rain in sight today. Willie rode Joe to Clara's in morn and got our mail. Willie and I went to Sunday School in eve and Nellie and Carmell staid home. Wiley and Rena and her 2 children and Minnie and baby returned from Jack D's late in eve.

Mon. 20th. Bright and very dry from N and no signs of rain today. Howard began in morn early to harrow cotton ground with Joe and he harrowed Gate cut and a little on hilltop of H ridge and some in Cherry cut today - running once and sometimes twice on a row for the ground is very dry and cloddy in places. Willie broke ground today in lower part of first corner in Sims' field with Dan and mule in new ground part most of day and I packed out brush and poles and cane ahead of him most of day.

Tue. 21st. Bright and cool and dry and no rain in sight. Howard harrowed ground for cotton with Joe most of day in Cherry cut and in 3rd Cane hollow and Willie broke ground with Dan and mule most of day in Luckett field. I hoed Irish potatoes and beans in garden by 10 1/2 in morn and put some stable manure around the red fig tree on W side of barn by 11 and finished it by 3 in eve. John Fosselmann and Charlie C came at 11 on a wagon and got out old bob tail white sow and weighed her here (334) and paid Willie 4 cts. per pound gross for her. I patched up fence on N side of orchard at 3 to 5 in eve.

Wed. 22nd. Clear and cool and dry (very) from N. Willie broke ground in Luckett field with Dan and mule today. Howard harrowed cotton ground with Joe in home field and in first corner of Sims' field today and didn't quite finish all of cotton ground broken. I cut some forks and poles in old road S of here most of morn and part of eve and packed them to orchard to make a bean arbor. I shelled 3 pks of seed corn at 1 to 2 in eve. Cousin Mary and Nellie drove Rosa to town in eve and returned at dusk.

Thu. 23rd. Clear and very cool early in morn and very dry from W -no signs of rain. Willie and Howard and I began early in morn and planted cotton most of day (our first) and Allen cotton which Sims gave to Willie. Willie opened ground with mule and I sowed seed and Howard covered with Dan to harrow. We planted Gate cut and hilltop of H ridge and all of hollow and hillsides in Sims' corner by 5 in eve and Willie and I came home then and Howard finished harrowing the ground in lower part of Sims' corner late in eve.

Fri. 24th. Bright and cool early in morn but a breeze from SW and warmer in eve and some clouds and appearance of rain. Willie and Howard and I planted cotton most of today as on yesterday. We finished planting Sims' corner by 11 1/4 in morn in Allen cotton and last of that seed and Howard carried Sims' new ground plow home at 12 and Willie got a bucket of dewberries by 11 3/4 and I came on home and Gussie came at 11 1/2 and carried Viola home in eve. We planted short staple cotton all eve in Cherry cut. Wiley drove Jim to buggy to town in eve. Tigner D came in eve and got our wagon to carry peas to Web Huff on tomorrow.

Sat. 25th. Bright and cool and dry in morn and cloudy some all eve and warm and sprinkled rain from NW at 3 1/2 in eve and a thunder cloud passed around NE of here from N, in sight, at 7 to 8 at night but no rain here. Willie and Howard worked on a covered manure pen in old cow pen till 9 in morn and Willie rode Joe by Clara's and on to town and returned at dusk. I hauled 3 cart loads of old pieces of rails for wood for cow pasture with Joe by 9 in morn and planted some watermelons and tomatoes in Sims' corner at 9 to 11 1/2 and I walked down and helped to clean off ground at new church at 2 to 5 in eve. All but me went to Lewis' to an ice cream supper at night and Mary and Mattie James went too - they came in morn -and they returned from supper at 11 3/4 at night.

Sun. 26th. Clear and cool and dry from N and no signs of rain today. I walked to Wiley's early in morn and Bernice came back with me and Wiley and Rena and little Wiley came on after me and here till after dinner and they and all of us went to Sunday School in eve. Mary and Mattie and Luster James went home early in morn.

Mon. 27th. Bright, nearly clear, and very dry - wind from E. Willie opened with Joe and I sowed seed and Howard covered with Dan and we planted short staple cotton most of day in Cherry cut and Pine corner and 3rd Cane hollow and finished all of cotton ground broken by late in eve. Wiley and Lewis drove Ella and Jim and Bonnie to our wagon to town in morn and got a load of lumber for church and Tigner D brought out a load too by 12 and Rena and baby and Helen here most of day and Wiley dined here too and Bernice and Viola came here from school. Wiley got a Shawnee harrow for himself and 1 for Willie in morn. I am taking a cold in my head and throat.

Tue. 28th. Bright and dry but a breeze from SE all day and some clouds and appearance of rain. Howard harrowed ground in Luckett field for corn all day with Joe. Willie tried to break up ground there with Dan and mule early in morn but came home at 9 in morn and tried to bar off cotton on H ridge with mule but ground was too dry and hard and he winnowed and measured up some peas. I walked down to new school house and helped Lewis about 2 hours and came back at 9 and packed some dry poles from calf pasture to orchard for bean arbor at 10 1/2 and Wilson Smith came then and I helped him to shell and shuck a bu of seed corn by 11 1/2 and I shelled about 1 bu for us to plant at 1 1/2 to 3 in eve. I took fever at 10 in morn with a cold in my head and throat and had fever and a headache all eve and night too and Willie had fever too with his cold. Helen and Minnie and her 2 children spent day at Clara's and Rena and baby here all eve.

Wed. 29th. Cloudy some all day and warmer from S and rained around some in little showers from S at 10 1/2 in morn to 3 in eve but only dropped here a little and thundered and lightened in W after dark and a cloud came up at 1 1/2 in night and rained a hard one here and slowly on till daylight. Willie and Howard and I planted corn in main body of Luckett field all day. Willie opened with mule and I drilled corn and Howard covered with Dan to harrow. Willie and I are both better of our colds today.

Thu. 30th. We had a good rain late last night (at 1 1/4 to 5 this morn) and the first rain that amounted to anything that we have had since on March 28th and it wet ground well and cloudy and quite cool all day from W of N. Lewis and Gussie drove Bonnie and Rosa and Jim to our wagon to town in morn and got the last of lumber and shingles for school house and they worked on roof in eve. Willie got up Joe early in morn from cow pasture and Willie broke new ground at back of our field all day with Joe to A plow and I cut sprouts and old stumps ahead of Willie most of day. Howard broke ground on hilltop of Luckett field all day with Dan and mule to B plow.
