APRIL 1902

Tue. April 1st. Bright and a little frost _____ and cool N breeze all day but sun shined all day and pleasant in sunshine. Willie _____ground at back of our field in morn and ______with Joe in eve. Henry broke ground in Luckett field with Dan and mule. I ____ early in morn and I walked to Wiley's early in morn and I dropped corn all day ____. Wiley opened with Goulden ______ with Jack mule to harrow. Bernice came home with me at 12 1/4.

Wed. 2nd. Bright and a little frost in morn but wind from S and warmer in eve. Sun shined all day and pleasant. Willie broke new ground at back of our field most of day with Joe and Henry in Luckett field with Dan and mule. I helped Wiley all day to plant corn as on yesterday, and we planted all of his corn but about 2 acres on ditch, both sides of it. Willie and I got some cattle from Sims' barn at sunset and put in cow pasture.

Thu. 3rd. Cloudy all day some but bright and a damp breeze from S. Willie and Henry and I planted corn most of day in SW corner and some on hilltop on Luckett field late in eve. Henry opened with mule and I dropped and Willie covered with Dan to harrow. ___ Collins got 2 bu of yam seed late in eve and paid 1 dollar for them. Willie and I drove 3 of our yearling calves from Sims' barn (and last of our cattle) and put them in cow pasture at dusk.

Fri. 4th. It rained a little shower at daylight in morn and quit about sunrise and cloudy till 10 in morn and bright and pleasant from NW balance of day. Willie and Henry and I planted corn in Luckett field all day on both sides of branch - on this side in morn and on other side in eve. Henry opened with mule and I drilled corn and Willie covered with Dan to harrow. Nellie at Wiley's all day.

Sat. 5th. Bright and pleasant from S. Willie and Henry and I planted corn on both sides of branch in Luckett field till 11 1/2 in morn and finished planting last of our corn. Willie and Gordon went fishing in eve. I shelled some seed corn just after dinner and put 1 bu of it and 1 of big peas and 1 1/4 of seed potatoes in a bbl and headed up to send to Primm's. I _____ Aunt Susan and Rose have 1 bu of seed potatoes.

Sun. 6th. Bright but cloudy some all day and warm from SW and rained a hard shower with some thunder at 2 1/2 in night. Nellie and Bernice walked to B C's in morn. Willie and Minnie drove Joe to Union church and on to Wiley's in eve and carried Carmell to Dixie's and left her there. I staid about house all eve.

Mon. 7th. We had a good rain at 2 1/2 to 3 in morn and just enough and needed too and cool and cloudy from W of N and drizzled a little till 10 and bright and pleasant in eve and clear at night. Willie broke new ground at back of our field most of day with Dan and mule and Henry dug holes and set wire posts from near barn (SW of it) to corner of _____ in N part of orchard in morn.(I set some there more than a week ago). Henry and I put up wire fence (3 strands) in eve. Nellie at Wiley's most of day helping to paper his house and she fell and hurt herself. I drove Joe to cart to Cohen's in morn and carried the bbl of seed corn and peas and potatoes to ship to Primm.

Tue. 8th. Bright, nearly clear, and quite cool early in morn but a pleasant and calm day. Willie broke new ground at back of our field with Dan and mule all day and finished there all but a little patch on W side for watermelons. Henry and I hauled out 8 cart loads of stable manure and 2 of cow manure in morn and 3 of cow manure in eve and dumped a load in pile on hilltop of Persimmon cut, for potatoes, and one of cartwheels gave out at 4 and we had to quit. I hoed Irish potatoes in garden late in eve. Minnie and Carmell and Aunt Margaret at Wiley's all day helping to paper room.

Wed. 9th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool early in morn but sun shined all day and a calm and pleasant day. Willie and Henry hauled out cow manure all morn with Dan and mule to wagon and put in piles on hilltop of Persimmon cut and finished it at 12 and I spread manure there in water furrows for potatoes all morn and till 4 1/4 in eve and finished it then. Henry rebedded all of patch with Dan and mule in eve and Willie cleaned up new ground toward Luckett field in eve. I cut some yams late in eve to plant but our yams have run out to pale colored potatoes and we do not like them.

Thu. 10th. Bright and cool early in morn but a pleasant and beautiful day and calm. Willie repaired wire fence on N side of Elmwood pasture in morn and broke up a patch with Joe at back of our field and planted it in watermelons in eve. Henry broke ground in Luckett field all day. I rode Joe to Thornton Barber's early in morn and bought 2 bu of Queen's and Red yams from him at 50 cts per bushel. Wiley got 2 bu there on yesterday. I returned at 10 1/4 and cut some of the red potatoes by 12 and I planted all eve on hilltop of Persimmon cut. Nellie at Wiley's all day and Bernice came back with her late in eve and staid all night.

Fri. 11th. Bright and dry and pleasant and calm weather. Henry broke ground in Luckett field with Joe and Dan and Willie broke up some new ground ends there with mule most of day. I planted potatoes, Queens and some of our mixed yams, most of day on hilltop of Persimmon cut. Fayette Bentley came at 4 in eve and got 5 bbls of the 30 which I sold to Cohen.

Sat. 12th. Bright, but cloudy some, ______ and thundered far off in morn and in eve. ________ broke new ground where Cap's house stood in morn with Dan and mule and finished there at 11 1/2. Willie ____ today, but up and didn't work. He rode ___ in eve to Surgett's to help Wiley to hunt his ____ jersey heifer but they didn't find her. I planted yams on hilltop of Persimmon cut all morn and finished all of patch but 2 rows on E side and I rebedded some ground on W side of orchard with mule and planted some butter and pole beans and okra in eve.

Sun. 13th. It began to rain just before day slowly from SW with some thunder and lasted till 9 and quit then but misted rain most of day after ___ and rained again with thunder from SW and (hot) wind from E and pretty high at midnight to 2 but a slow rain and needed too. Nellie walked to Wiley's at 9 1/2 in morn and I walked there at 1 1/2 and carried Carmell and we returned at 4 1/2 in eve and Rena and Bernice came with us. Tigner D brought Clara home from Tigner Newman's. _____ Clara has been out ____ for several weeks and Mary is getting weaker _____.

Mon. 21st. Cloudy and foggy and water ____ trees till 8 1/2 in morn (from S) and bright ____ and pleasant from S after 9 in morn. Henry ___ corn on H ridge and in Cherry cut with mule most of day. Willie and I hoed corn most of day. We ____ cut by 9 in morn and hoed on H ridge balance of day. Tigner D came from Tigner Newman's at ___ and led Joe back and left Nellie and buggy out there. Mary died at 6 a.m. Rena and Bernice here most of day - Wiley dined here too.

Tue. 22nd. Bright and pleasant _____ damp and S breeze all day. Willie rode Joe to Tigner Newman's to burying in morn and he and Nellie ____ in buggy late in eve. Henry barred off corn __ mule all day in Cherry cut and in old Cane hollow and I hoed corn on H ridge ____ day. Dunc Veal came with a wagon ___ in morn and got 16 bbls corn (part of that ___corn sometime ago) and he got a bu of ___seed on credit.

Wed. 23rd. Bright and dry and pleasant from SW. Henry barred off corn with mule all day in old Cane hollow and 2nd Cane hollow and in SW corner and Willie and I hoed corn most of day. We finished H ridge at 8 1/2 in morn and balance of day in old Cane hollow. Nellie at Wiley's most of day and Bernice came back with her and stayed here all night. Buddy and Gordon _____ at 9 1/4 at night to get something to ____leg, his pony kicked him late in ____.

Thu. 24th. Bright and dry ____ W. Henry barred of corn all day ____ hollows and in Pine corner with mule ___ corn most of day. We finished old Cane hollow in morn and hoed in 2nd Cane hollow ___ and we helped Wiley to drive his little ___ young pigs to Wiley's late in ___.

Fri. 25th. Bright but ____ damp breeze from SW in morn. ____corn all day with mule. ____ in home field by 9 1/2 in morn. ____ in Luckett field balance of day. _____ hoed corn all day. We finished 2nd Cane hollow by 11 1/2 in morn and we hoed in 3rd Cane hollow ____.

Sat. 26th. Bright, ____ and warm and wind from NW and thundered ____ a cloud in sight in SW and W. ____ barred off corn all morn in Luckett field ___ and Willie and I hoed corn all morn in 3rd Cane hollow and in SW corner and Willie plowed Irish potatoes in orchard with mule in eve and I hoed over ___ all of garden in eve and got warm and wet with _____. Wiley and Nellie and Bernice drove Joe to town in morn and Rena here all eve.

Sun. 27th. Bright but some dark clouds all day and thundered far off early in morn and sprinkled rain just before day and warm all day and a damp breeze from S. I walked to Wiley's in morn. Wiley went to his Pa's and Rena and Bernice came back with me. Lewis and all his family and Mrs. Wigner __ here most of eve. Willie and Bernice both ____ medicine in morn - both are unwell.

Mon. 28th. Bright and warm but ___ some all day and a damp breeze from S. Willie and ____ and I drove Dan to mule to wagon to Luckett field and carried some cotton seed early in morn and we planted cotton there in lower part and SW corner all day with Dan and mule. Henry opened with mule and I sowed seed and Willie covered with Dan to harrow.

Tue. 29th. Warm and cloudy and very ____ sun and a damp breeze from S. Willie and Henry and I planted cotton in lower part of Luckett field and ____ corner on branch in morn by 10 1/2 and finished last of our cotton and we brought wagon home by 10 3/4. ____ planted whip peas in eve on poor S part ___ cut and a little strip on SE part of H ridge and some on NE corner of Persimmon cut ____about 2 1/4 pks in all and finished at 4 3/4. Willie ____ and Henry barred off some and I hoed and replanted ____ orchard late in eve.

Wed. 30th. Warm and cloudy some all day but bright and wind from S and dry. Henry barred off corn in Luckett field on branch all day with mule. Willie and I hoed corn most of day - some little in 3rd Cane hollow and Pine corner and part of Persimmon cut and part of Cherry cut. We hoed at least 3 acres today. I was sick all day with sick stomach and gripping pains in it but felt better late in eve. Wiley had some hands helping him to plant cotton and hoe corn today.
