Thu. Apr. 1st. Clear and a little cool from NW all day and a beautiful and pleasant day. Willie rode Joe to Clara's late on yesterday eve and stayed there all night on account of rain and he came home at 8 in morn and harrowed ground in Coon field balance of day with Joe and Dick. I plowed road on H ridge early in morn and broke up all of potatoe patch there on hilltop running 4 furrows to middles (I listed it on yesterday eve) by 11 in morn. Jim brought Effie home from Wiley's on buggy at 10 1/2 in morn (she has been there since last Sunday). I put some seed potatoes in 2 sacks (mostly yams) at 11 to 12 and sent to Wiley in eve. Clara and little Bud here all day. Pa and I cut and planted potatoes (yams) all eve on H ridge. Our potatoe seeds kept well - some in barrels in flower pit and some under cotton house.
Fri. 2nd. Cloudy and cool in morn but wind from SE and warmer in eve - bright part of day but cloudy and thundered in SW late in eve. Willie finished harrowing Coon field at 9 in morn and broke ground on H ridge with Joe and Dick balance of day. Pa and I planted potatoes on H ridge till 11 in morn and finished and I picked out some seed potatoes for Buddy and some for Ed Wells at 11 to 1 1/2 (which I packed out from under cotton house). Pa walked to Clara's at 1 to 4 in eve and told Buddy about potatoes and he sent Andrew at 2 1/2 and got them. I patched up handle to my A plow at 1 3/4 to 3 in eve and cut some stumps and roots in hollow in orchard and packed and cut up some wood.
Sat. 3rd. It began to rain slowly from S just before day and lasted till 11 (but didn't rain hardly enough to run) and quit then and bright and pleasant in eve. We packed and cut up some wood in morn and I shucked corn and did my evening's work by 11 in morn and Pa and I drove Hattie and Willie rode Joe to Turnbull's (in eve) and we held a primary election for a clerk to fill Cooper's place. We stopped at Cohen's coming home and got home before sunset.
Sun. 4th. Bright and pleasant day and sun shined all day and no signs of rain today. Pa walked to Clara's in morn and there all day. I found a hen's nest by old sassafras stump back of garden with 12 eggs in it (fresh) early in morn. B C and Dixie drove to Wiley's in eve and B C brought buggy home at 11 at night and left Dixie there to stay a week. Nellie and Willie walked to Seymour's in eve and brought Maxie F back with them late in eve to stay with Nellie while Dixie is gone. Pa was sick at night with diarrhea.
Mon. 5th. Foggy till 9 in morn and bright balance of day and warm but thundered and showered far off in NW and SE too at 3 to 5 in eve but no rain here. Willie plowed Joe and Dick all morn and finished breaking ground on SE circle of H ridge and last of our old ground - all being broken except a little in new 2nd Cane hollow. I plowed Hattie all morn till 11 1/4 in hollow and on hillside in orchard breaking ground there and finished it and Pa scraped part of Irish potatoe patch in old cowpen corner in morn. Pa walked to Alice's in eve - her youngest boy is sick. Willie and I planted cotton (our first) all eve in Coon field. I carried seed there on cart with Hattie and opened ground with her and Willie sowed seed (I helped him some) and he covered with Dick (first time that Dick worked single).
Tue. 6th. Warm and cloudy some all day but bright part of day and thundered and showered S of here nearly all eve and a dark cloud came up near here from SW and passed around S at 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 and another passed around N from NW and we had a little shower at 6 1/2 in eve. I carried a cartload of seed to Coon field early in morn with Hattie and Pa and Willie and I planted cotton there all day till 5 1/2 in eve and cloud ran us home then. I opened with Hattie and Willie covered with Dick. Ida here late in eve (she went to Cohen's in eve).
Wed. 7th. Bright, nearly clear, and warm from SE and no rain. Pa, Willie and I finished planting cotton in Coon field and got home by 11 1/2 in morn. I lay on pallet till 12. I arose with a cold and sore throat and dull headache on yesterday morn and had it all last night and slept but little and had it all today and was very feverish and didn't sleep well at night again. I barred off all of sugar cane (stubble and planted, too) at 1 3/4 to 3 1/4 in eve and barred off cut of corn by front gate on E side by 5 3/4 with Hattie. Pa and Willie finished scraping Irish potatoes in old cow pen corner and scraped some of sugar cane in NE corner of orchard in eve.
Thu. 8th. Dark cloudy and a damp S wind all morn and till 2 in eve and a dark cloud came up from NW at 2 1/4 and rained a good rain at 2 1/4 to 5 1/2 slowly with some little thunder. I barred off cut of corn by front gate on W side and some in Gate cut till 11 in morn and Pa and Willie finished scraping sugar cane at 8 1/2 in morn and hoed corn by front gate till 11. We did not work in eve on account of rain. I made a handle for my new hoe and made 2 flower boxes for Nellie in eve. Maxie F went back to Seymour's early in morn - she has been here since last Sunday eve. I was hoarse and feverish with my cold at night and sweat good deal but slept well.
Fri. 9th. Cloudy some all day and a cold N wind (or W of N) and chilly but sun shined some through the day. Pa and I patched up wire fence on N side of cow pen by putting in new white oak posts (driving them in ground) and tacking wire to them by 10 in morn and we packed and cut up wood till 11 1/4. Willie patched up cow pasture wire fence on creek and deadened some trees in Coon field till 11 in morn. Jim came at 1 1/4 to get some Japanese oil for Rena's toothache. I drove Hattie to Cohen's in eve and Pa walked to Clara's and went there too with the 3 little boys. I got 1 1/2 bu. meal and 1 oz. of Cinchonidia on credit and some other things which I paid for. Hattie W here awhile in eve and Mrs. Henderson and Jim here late in eve.
Sat. 10th. Bright, nearly clear, after 8 in morn and quite cool early in morn but pleasant after 10 in morn and a cloud came up from NW with far off thunder late in eve and sprinkled rain here at dusk. Pa and Willie hoed corn all morn. They finished by front gate and hoed some in Gate cut and Willie hoed in Gate cut most of eve. I barred off cotton in Gate cut with Hattie in morn and I harrowed all in eve of H ridge (for cotton) except for hilltop (where we planted our potatoes) by 5 in eve. I ran once to row over all except in middle part of cut where wire grass was bad and I ran twice there. Pa walked to Clara's in eve. My head was stopped up with cold most of day and my nose bled several times through the day and relieved me some.
Sun. 11th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool in shade all day but a calm and pleasant and beautiful day. I walked all over our field hunting some ripe dewberries but only found about 1/2 doz. (they are just beginning to ripen). Dixie has been at Wiley's since last Sunday and we looked all yesterday for her and Rena to come home but they didn't and B C came at 9 in morn and drove buggy to Wiley's at 10 to 11 1/2 in morn and brought Dixie home late in eve. Nellie and Willie walked to Lewis' in eve and Willie went on to Seymour's and came home in night. Cousin Tom and Lewis and Joe Miller here awhile in eve.
Mon. 12th. Cloudy some and S wind most of day but sun shined some. I barred off corn all morn and finished Gate cut at 9 1/2 in morn and barred off in new SW corner (began at wire fence) till 11 1/2 and I harrowed all of ground in orchard (except Irish potatoe patch and sugar cane ground) for cotton in eve (once to row and twice in pumpkin hollow) - Pa's patch this year. Pa and Willie hoed corn in Gate cut most of day and finished there late in eve.
Tue. 13th. Bright and pleasant from SW but some clouds all day. Willie harrowed all of old Cane hollow and Cherry cut once to row (for cotton) with Joe and finished at 5 in eve. I broke up ground in 2nd new Cane hollow - some that was cultivated last year and some that was not - till 11 1/2 in morn with Hattie and broke a singletree at 9 in morn. Pa packed old sugar cane stubble for cotton out of patch all morn and I barred off corn with Hattie all eve on upper side of Persimmon cut and Pa hoed there.
Wed. 14th. Cloudy and thundered most of morn in S and SW and SE and sprinkled rain here just after breakfast and bright late in eve and cooler from NW. Pa, Willie and I planted cotton all day with Hattie and Joe and we finished orchard at 9 1/2 in morn and H ridge at 3 1/2 in eve and planted on in old Cane hollow till late in eve.
Thu. 15th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from N and no signs of rain. Pa, Willie and I planted cotton all morn and till 4 1/2 in eve and we finished old Cane hollow at 10 1/4 in morn and planted balance of day in Cherry cut (we began on upper side). I opened with Hattie and Willie covered with Joe and helped Pa to sow seed too. Willie rode Joe to Ed Ogden's to a party at night and Sam Jones was to lecture in Woodville at night.
Fri. 16th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool and dry from W of N all day. Pa, Willie and I planted cotton on W side of Cherry and water hole cuts and a little in new 2nd Cane hollow by 10 1/4 in morn and I harrowed it with Hattie at 1 1/2 to 4 in eve once to row (and twice over some). Willie drove Joe to Pinson place in eve and carried Nellie to stay till Sunday and he returned 3/4 of an hour by sun. Pa cut sprouts in new 2nd Cane hollow and knocked up some stumps in eve. Mrs. Baker came to Lewis' (via Ashwood) on day before yesterday and she dined here today and left just after dinner.
Sat. 17th. Clear and quite cool early in morn and a cool and dry N breeze all day. Pa, Willie and I planted cotton (with Hattie and Joe) in new 2nd Cane hollow till 9 in morn and finished there and last of our cotton and I plowed our Irish potatoes in old cow pen corner by 10 1/2 and Willie deadened some trees in Coon field in eve. Pa walked to Clara's and I harrowed all of corn middles in cut by front gate on both sides twice to row with Hattie at 1 1/2 to 5 in eve. I had a dull headache all morn and it left me in eve.
Sun. 18th. Bright, nearly clear, and quite cool early in morn but a calm and beautiful day and warmer in eve. Willie drove Joe to Dixie's buggy and carried Maxie F to chapel in morn and they returned at 2 in eve and Willie walked to Seymour's with her in eve. B C here in eve and till bedtime. I drove Hattie to old buggy to Pinson place (and carried some Queens) at 8 1/4 to 10 in morn and Nellie came home with me at 5 1/4 in eve. Mr. Sims here in eve awhile and Seymour rode Flirt here late in eve and put her in cow pasture to stay awhile.
Mon. 19th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool and dry but little warmer in eve. I barred off corn all day with Hattie in new SW corner. I began next to wire fence (where I barred off about 2 hours on last Monday morn) and I finished all of log ground part and got down to bottom next to corner oak stump by late in eve. Pa and Willie hoed corn there all day. Sims sent and borrowed our cart early in morn to haul out manure on potatoe patch. A roan mare with a bell on came here through the field at 1 1/2 in eve and I put her in yard then and put her into cow pasture late in eve.
Tue. 20th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool in morn but cloudy and warmer and calm in eve. I barred off cotton all day with Hattie and finished new SW corner at 10 in morn and got up nearly 1/2 way in Pine corner by late in eve. Pa and Willie hoed corn behind me all day and they got up in Pine corner by late in eve. I took 4 Pierce's pills today - 3 before breakfast and 1 just before dinner and they worked me late in eve. I am still stuffed up with cold in my head and throat and am feverish and had a dull headache yesterday and last night and soreness in my right heel and hip.
Wed. 21st. Bright and cool and dry - calm and clear in morn but SE winds and some dark clouds in eve and at night. I barred off corn in morn till 10 3/4 with Hattie in Pine corner and Persimmon cut and finished all of corn but old pea ground on poor NE part of Cherry cut (about 1 acre) and Pa and Willie hoed corn all day in Pine corner and Persimmon cut. Nellie and I drove Joe to town in eve and Nellie bought 3 hats from Mrs. Habig - 1 for herself and 1 for Dixie and 1 for Rena and she left Rena's there to be trimmed. We stopped at Chester Henderson's going and coming and got home at sunset.
Thu. 22nd. Cloudy some and a damp E of S breeze all day and sprinkled rain several times in morn at 10 to 11 and again in eve at 2 to 4. I barred off corn in old pea ground in poor NE part of Cherry cut and finished there and last of our corn by 9 1/4 in morn and I went all around calf pasture by 11 and stopped pig holes. Pa and Willie hoed corn most of day and finished last of our corn. E.M Tabor dined here. I drove Hattie to Dixie's buggy to Cohen's in eve and got 2 bu. meal and 1/2 bu. salt and 1 pr. plow shoes for myself and 5 lbs. nails and 2 A plow points and 3 yds. black calico and 4 of black lace and 1 box Pierce's pills all on credit and returned 1 hour by sun.
Fri. 23rd. Bright most of day but some rainy spots of clouds with a S breeze and sprinkled rain at 5 1/2 in eve. Willie plowed Dick all day in Coon field and barred off cotton there. I harrowed all of Gate cut (corn middles) twice to row (about 3 acres) and finished at 5 in eve. Hays (the assessor) dined here and Bro. Breland and wife and John Miller came late in eve and all stayed here all night. Seymour and family here at night till 10 and we had singing and piano music from Sister Breland. Pa planted some cotton in hollow in orchard with hoe today.
Sat. 24th. Cloudy some and S wind all day but bright and no rain. Bro. Breland and wife left early after breakfast and John Miller and I rode to town together (I rode Hattie) and only went to Mrs. Habig's and got the hat for Rena and I met up with Rena and Miss Bertie Hendricks at Surgettt place coming here and we got here at 11. Willie barred off cotton with Dick in Coon field most of morn and Pa cut down weed and briars in hollow on W side of yard in morn. I had a headache all day and worse in eve and at night and slept but little. I took Pierce's pills yesterday and today too.
Sun. 25th. Cloudy and calm but bright and thundered in the W and NW at 11 to 2 today and dropped rain here at 1. We need rain badly. I rode Hattie down in cow pasture and salted cattle and rode all over Coon field to see cotton early in morn and Wiley came at 9 and he and Willie drove Joe to Dixie's buggy to Union church at 9 1/2 to 2 1/4. All of us but Pa walked to Lewis' and Breland preached there in eve and he and wife stayed all night at Lewis' and Wiley went home late in eve and Rena and Miss Bertie stayed here all night again. My headache was bad early in morn and I tried to vomit but didn't and it got better after I took 2 pills and drank coffee and it left me in eve.
Mon. 26th. Bright and cooler from N and no signs of rain and getting too dry. Willie plowed Dick all day in Coon field and barred off cotton and Pa scraped cotton there all day. Breland and wife came by from Lewis' early in morn and got a white boar pig which I gave him. I patched up a box and put it in it and they left at 8 1/2 in morn. I harrowed corn middles in new SW corner (began at wire) at 9 to 11 1/2 and in eve at 2 to 4 (running once and sometimes twice to row) and my harrow came open in front at 4 in eve and I brought it home and fixed it by 5 1/4. Rena and Miss Bertie H went home at 2 in eve in Dixie's buggy. Wiley's buggy has the 5th wheel broken. Lewis brought us a large piece of beef late in eve (he butchered a yearling). Willie found Salome dead in cow pasture in morn. She died yesterday or last night giving birth to a colt. Mrs. Baker here all day.
Tue. 27th. Bright and dry - cool in morn but warmer in eve. Willie finished barring off cotton in Coon field at 9 in morn and he scraped there balance of day with Pa. I harrowed corn middles all morn and finished new SW corner and little in Pine corner (once to row). I began to lay by corn early after dinner and plowed out all of cut by front gate on E side with 4 furrows (with Hattie) by late in eve. The corn is yellow boat corn (home saved seed) and very small to lay by but the ground is very dry and glazed on top but not dry deep and plows well.
Wed. 28th. Cloudy and damp SW breeze in morn and a thundercloud came up from S of W at 11 1/4 in morn and we had a good hard shower at 11 1/4 to 12 and slowly till 1 1/2 and quit. The rain wet ground well where it has been broken and was much needed (for it was very dry on top but not deep). Pa and Willie scraped cotton in Coon field all day. They came home in the hard rain at 11 1/2 (wet) and went out again at 2 in eve. I plowed corn all day with Hattie. I plowed out cut by front gate on W side and 5 or 6 rows in Gate cut next to H ridge where we had potatoes last year by 11 in morn and I plowed in Gate cut all eve. The ground was little sticky on top in potatoe patch part when I first went out at 2 in eve but soon got all right. It was cloudy all night with a pleasant S breeze. Dixie walked to Seymour's in eve. She and Maxie F were to go to Pinson place in eve but Maxie didn't come.
Thu. 29th. Cloudy and cool from W of N all day and no rain. Pa and Willie scraped cotton all day in Coon field and I plowed corn all day in Gate cut with Hattie. I drove her to cart to Lewis' at 1 to 2 in eve and got Cousin Mary's old sewing machine (Nellie bought it for Rena). Dixie and Maxie F drove old Flirt to Pinson place in morn and returned at sunset and Maxie stayed here all night.
Fri. 30th. Dark cloudy and quite cool from W of N all day and no sunshine. Pa and Willie scraped cotton all day in Coon field and I plowed corn all day in Gate cut with Hattie (very hard) and finished that cut at 5 3/4 in eve. I have plowed out all of our boat corn - the cut by front gate (both sides) and all of Gate cut about 4 acres in all. Maxie F left early in morn. Nellie and Dixie washed in morn.
