Mon. Apr. 1st. It rained some just before day and quit at daylight and cloudy till 8 1/2 in morn and bright and calm amd warm balance of day. Willie plowed Joe and Dick all day in Cherry cut breaking ground and I plowed Hattie all day in new SW corner in log ground part on N side of hollow in morn and on S side by wire fence in eve and Pa cut stumps and sprouts ahead of me all day. Lewis got some potatoeseed here late in eve.
Tue. 2nd. Bright and a cool NW wind all day and cloudy some late in eve and wind chilly from N. Willie plowed Joe and Dick all day in Cherry cut in new part on W and SW sides (breaking ground). I plowed Hattie all morn in new SW corner breaking ground and rode her to Cohen's in eve and got some coffee -10 lbs. and one bu. meal and a plow point. Pa cut sprouts and stumps in new SW corner all day. I had a dull headache all day and all night and slept but little and began to vomit just before day. Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Mag McGraw came at dusk and stayed all night.
Wed. 3rd. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from N. I lay on pallet in Pa's room most of morn and vomited with headache and it got better at 11 and I got up but had it some all eve and night. Willie plowed Joe and Dick in Cherry cut on W side and finished that cut and plowed little in Cane hollow cut in morn. Dixie and Willie drove Hattie to Virgil Fugler's burying in eve. Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Mag Mc. left here in eve. Pa and I cut some large canes in Sims' field to put bottles on in eve.
Thu. 4th. Bright, nearly clear, a very slight frost on cane fodder in morn but a pleasant day and warmer in eve from SW. Willie plowed Joe and Dick all day in Cane hollow breaking ground and I plowed Hattie all day in new SW corner breaking ground and Pa cut stumps and sprouts there most of day. He put up canes with bottles on them in morn. Mr. Mabry Morris here at dark and till 8 1/2 at night.
Fri. 5th. Cloudy and S wind all day but sun shined good deal and great appearance of rain late in eve. Willie plowed Joe and Dick in Cane hollow most of day. He and Pa fired 2nd Cane hollow (cut down in January) at 1 to 2 in eve. I plowed Hattie in new SW corner part of morn breaking ground. I broke a plow point at 8 in morn and put on another old one and broke plow beam at 10 and quit. I rode Hattie to Cohen's in eve and got a new beam and 1 bolt for my plow.
Sat. 6th. It began to rain in thundershowers at daylight from SW and lasted till 11 in morn (just enough) and cloudy but bright in eve. Pa and I packed and cut up wood at 10 to 11 1/2 in morn and I made 4 flower boxes in eve and I put some logs and old cane stalks in cane toward cow pen. Bud dined here. Dixie and Rena at Lewis' in eve and Lewis borrowed buggy in eve and carried Mrs. Baker to town - she heard that Charlie was in jail.
Sun. 7th. Clear and a cool (very) NW wind most of day and very smoky all day. Dixie and Rena drove Hattie and Willie rode Joe to Union Church in morn and returned at 3 in eve. Tigner and his little brother here to dinner. Dan and Joe Miller and Lewis and family here in eve and Wiley D here to supper.
Mon. 8th. Cloudy some but bright most of day and a very cool NW wind, and sprinkled rain little several times in eve, and cleared off late in eve before sunset. I plowed Hattie in morn in new SW corner and finished breaking last of it by 11 1/2 in morn and harrowed all of it (log ground part) in eve once to row and Pa and I planted little corn there, about 8 or 10 rows late in eve. Willie plowed Joe and Dick most of day in Cane hollow on S hillside breaking ground. He broke 3 lap rings and 1 plow point and 1 bolt and didn't plow but little in eve.
Tue. 9th. Clear, a little frost on cane fodder in morn, but not cold enough to kill anything and warmer in eve. Pa, Willie and I planted corn in new SW corner all morn and till 3 1/2 in eve (in log ground part) and finished there and I plowed road with Hattie by H ridge till 4 and we hauled out 1 cartload of stable manure and put in water furrows on NE corner of Persimmon cut late in eve (for potatoes).
Wed. 10th. Clear and beautiful and pleasant weather. Willie plowed Joe and Dick all day in Cane hollow and in old pea ground on hillside E and SE of there breaking ground and finished there late in eve. Pa and I hauled out cow manure from pen all day and put on NE corner of Persimmon cut for potatoes. We hauled out 8 cartloads in morn and 7 in eve. We put it in water furrows - the ground had been broken about 2 or 3 weeks ago. Salome gave birth to a mare colt last night in cow pasture and our other young white sow had 8 pigs last night in calf pasture but she overlaid one and killed it.
Thu. 11th. Bright nearly clear and pleasant. Pa and I hauled out 7 cartloads of cow manure and put in water furrows on NE corner of Persimmon cut by 11 1/4 and finished. Willie broke little ground in hollow on SE circle of H ridge early in morn and rebedded all of NE corner of Persimmon cut (where we put manure) for potatoes by 12 with Joe and Dick. Pa, Willie and I cut and planted potatoes all eve and got about half done.
Fri. 12th. Clear and pleasant. Wind from SW. Pa, Willie and I cut a few potatoes (the last we have) early in morn and finished planting them by 9 3/4 in morn. We lacked 8 short rows of having enough to plant all of NE corner of Persimmon cut. Willie and I hauled out 5 cartloads of cow manure by 12 and 10 loads in eve with Hattie and put in little piles on hilltop of H ridge. Pa cut and deadened trees by wire fence E of Persimmon cut after 10 in morn.
Sat. 13th. Clear all morn and a cool W breeze and cloudy some in spots in eve and thundered in SW but clear at night. Pa cut and deadened trees E of Persimmon cut in morn and I hauled out 11 cartloads of cow manure and put in little piles on H ridge by 11 1/2. Willie plowed Joe and Dick on H ridge and finished plowing under all of manure put out by 11 1/2. I drove Hattie to Cohen's in eve to buggy. Wiley and Leroy D. here to supper. Seymour came with a wagon and 2 mules at 8 1/4 at night and stayed here all night.
Sun. 14th. Bright nearly clear and pleasant from SW. Seymour went to Lewis' with his wagon and mules in morn early. W.D. here all day and Beau C here in eve. I rode Hattie to Clara's in eve and stopped by Sims' awhile (coming back).
Mon. 15th. Cloudy and wind pretty high from SW most of day but sun shined most of day. I hauled out 11 cartloads of cow manure in morn and 3 more by 3 in eve and put on H ridge in little piles and finished last of our manure. I packed out some spoiled cane and fodder from old cow pen corner late in eve on lower side. Willie plowed Joe and Dick all day on H ridge breaking ground and finished that cut and last of ground in field all being broken but orchard. Pa burned brush and cleaned up ground in 2nd Cane hollow all day. We put 23 cartloads of manure on potatoe ground and 40 on H ridge.
Tue. 16th. Warm and cloudy from SW and sprinkled rain little at daylight and again at 4 in eve and wind changed to NW then and cleared up. Willie harrowed ground for cotton and whip peas all day - Joe in morn and Hattie in eve. He harrowed part of Persimmon cut and all of Cherry cut (new part included) and part of Cane hollow. Pa burned brush in 2nd Cane hollow all day. I packed all of fodder and stalks from cane patch in old cow pen corner in morn and I rode Joe to Cohen's in eve and carried 2 settings of eggs (from Sims) to Zoller and got 1/2 lb. tea for Ma. I had a pain in left side of my head all day.
Wed. 17th. Cloudy and cool from N and wind blew all day till late in eve from N. The sun didn't shine all day. Pa, Willie and I planted whip peas on SE part of Persimmon cut up to Cherry cut on hill early in morn and we planted cotton (Fishburn) in Cherry cut balance of day after 9 in morn and got most of that cut planted (new part included). I opened ground with Hattie and Willie covered with Joe. Pa sowed peas and cotton seed and Willie helped him some. Misses Carrie and Lucy Chambers here all day. I had a dull pain in right side of my head all day but it went off at night.
Thu. 18th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool and dry from N. Pa, Willie and I planted cotton and peas till 11 in morn. We finished Cherry cut and planted whip peas on poor E side of Gate cut and planted cotton on all of Cane bottom that was plowed by 11. Willie harrowed balance of Cane bottom with Joe in eve twice to row on part of it. I barred off our Irish potatoes in NE corner of orchard and broke up ground for cotton with Hattie there in eve. Pa hoed the potatoes.
Fri. 19th. Bright and cool and dry. Pa, Willie and I planted cotton in Cane hollow till 9 3/4 in morn and finished that cut then. Pa and Willie burned and cleaned up ground in 2nd Cane hollow balance of day and I plowed Hattie in orchard and broke ground balance of day after 9 3/4 in morn. Capt. G.T. McGehee here electioneering for Sheriff at 11 3/4 to 12. Nellie, Dixie and Rena washed and whitewashed some today.
Sat. 20th. Bright and cool and dry. Pa and Willie burned brush and cleaned off ground in 2nd Cane hollow most of morn. I plowed Hattie in orchard breaking ground all morn and till 4 in eve and finished breaking there and last of our ground then. I hoed around 3 pecan and 6 apple trees on W side of orchard at 4 to 5 1/4. Willie rode Joe to Primm's pasture to baseball meeting in eve with Bud and he stayed here to supper and Cousins Tom and Lucy came here late in eve from Lewis' and stayed here all night.
Sun. 21st. Bright and cool and dry but wind from S and warmer in eve and some dark clouds. Cousins Tom and Lucy here last night and till 3 in eve. Dixie and West drove Hattie to town for Mrs. Baker in morn but she didn't come back with them. W.D. here late in eve and at night.
Mon. 22nd. Bright and warm from SW till 11 in morn and dark cloudy balance of day and sprinkled rain at 5 in eve and on till dark and quit then. Pa and Willie burned brush and cleaned off ground in 2nd Cane hollow till rain at 5 in eve. I barred off all of our cane stubble in old cow pen corner and in NW patch in orchard and cleaned off some fodder and stalks there in morn (I plowed Hattie) and I scraped cane stubble by cow pen till rain at 5 in eve.
Tue. 23rd. Cloudy, warm and damp till 10 in morn and bright and dry in eve. Pa burned and cleaned off ground in SW corner by wire fence all day. Willie plowed Joe and Dick at Lewis' breaking ground all day. Beau C and Gussie and Wiley plowed there too and Lewis plowed Hattie with his mule. Nellie there till eve. I scraped cane stubble all day. I finished cow pen corner at 10 1/4 and scraped in patch on NW side of orchard balance of day. Misses Katie and Becky Ogden here in eve.
Wed. 24th. Bright and warm till 3 in eve and thundershowers passed around from S at 3 1/2 to 6 but only dropped rain little here, Pa and Willie finished burning off 2nd Cane hollow in morn and Willie barred off all of boat corn in Gate cut -about 1 1/2 acres- with Hattie in eve and Pa hoed there. I arose with a headache but scraped cane stubble till 10 1/2 in morn on NW side of orchard and finished there and lay down balance of day and vomited some from headache. Thu. 25th. Bright, warm and dry. Not much signs of rain, wind from SW. Pa and Willie hoed corn all day. They finished Gate cut (boat corn) in eve and hoed some by front gate. I barred off all of cut of corn by front on both sides and little patch beyond road with Hattie and finished at 10 1/2. My headache got better early in morn and left me by noon. I replanted sugar cane stubble with cotton all eve but didn't quite finish. Nellie rode Hattie to Clara's in eve.
Fri. 26th. Bright and warm most of day but a thundershower passed around at noon but only dropped here. I finished planting cotton in cane stubble in 1 hour early in morn. Pa, Willie and I finished hoeing cut of corn by front gate by 9 1/2 in morn and we planted corn with hoes in new SW corner by wire and in 2nd Cane hollow balance of day. Willie killed 1 old and 3 young crows at 1 o'clock and I hung them up in Persimmon cut of whip peas and gave 1 to West to put in their potatoe patch.
Sat. 27th. Cloudy and a dark rain cloud came up from SW at 7 1/4 in morn and rained hard for 1 hour then slowly balance of day till 5 in eve and quit. It rained a big fall of water in all but just enough to wet ground well and not wash off any (the ground was very dry). Pa, Willie and I began to plant corn in 2nd Cane hollow with hoes and rain ran us home at 7 1/4 in morn. I made a handle and put in the little short handle ax in morn and I made a handle and put in old hoe in eve and Pa and I got some wood.
Sun. 28th. Bright and pleasant from N. Pa walked to Clara's in morn and there all day. I walked to Sims' in morn and got some papers. Bud here most of day. Dixie and Rena went to Gussie's in morn and Nellie and Willie and Bud walked there in eve and W.D. and Beau C came back with them and stayed here till 9 at night.
Mon. 29th. Nearly clear and calm and warm and fine growing weather. Pa and Willie planted corn with hoes in 2nd Cane hollow all day. I harrowed all of H ridge (for cotton) once to row and all of pea ground on NE end of Cherry cut for whip peas again by 11 1/2 in morn with Hattie and I harrowed all of ground for cotton in orchard in eve and plowed Irish potatoes by splitting middles with 2 furrows and opened little ground for planting cotton (on tomorrow) late in eve.
Tue. 30th. Bright and warm from SE. Pa, Willie and I planted all of cotton in orchard,about 1 1/2 acres, and all of H ridge-about 3 acres - and about 1/2 of whip peas (in old pea ground in NE corner of Cherry cut). We would have finished the peas but there was so much dead grass under ground that I could not open it and we quit at 5 1/2 in eve. I opened with Hattie all day and Willie harrowed Joe and Pa sowed cotton seed in peas. Lucy McGraw came on yesterday eve and Rena went home with her in our buggy in eve.
