APRIL 1882

Sat. Apr. 1st. Clear and cool in morn and cloudy some and windy from E in eve. I hauled out 3 loads of manure and plowed it under solidly on H ridge by 11 in morn. Willie and I went on cart to town in eve and got some coffee, 5pds, 1 gal Mol-12 pds pork from Kaiser on credit and got 1 gal coal oil for Alice-25cts, and a strainer bucket for Ma-50cts, and a wooden bucket for us-25cts, and some paper from R and W for myself and 25 cts blueing for Nellie.

Sun. 2nd. Bright and pleasant, wind from SE. A shower passed around W at 3 in eve with thunder far off. All of us went to Sunday School in morn and on to Pa's. Mr. D went there too and all of us dined there. Bob H. stayed at Mr. D's last night and went to Sunday School with us in morn.

Mon. 3rd. Bright and pleasant, wind and some clouds from SE. I hauled out 5 loads of manure on H ridge in morn and 1 just after dinner and covered it with 2 furrows late in eve and hauled a load of wood from hollow by dead pine at sunset.

Tue. 4th. Bright, pleasant and getting dry, wind from SE, some clouds in eve. I hauled out 4 cartloads of manure in morn, plowed it under with 4 furrows solidly and all where I put manure on yesterday in eve and finished it in a hour and 1/2 and loaded cart with manure for tomorrow and dug up some in Julia's stable late in eve and pruned my pecan trees.

Wed. 5th. Cloudy and damp and E wind all day though sun shone good deal through day. Shower passed around all eve. It sprinkled here late in eve. I hauled out 4 loads of manure in morn and 1 in eve (1 load from Julia's stable) and finished all, making 24 loads in all, about 330 bus. I plowed under manure in eve with 4 furrows and finished all and was very tired. I hauled load of wood from hollow by dead pine at sunset. Alice and baby and Clara spent day here today.

Thu. 6th. It rained a little from S just before day and showers and shiny all day, but didn't rain enough all together to wet the clods for it is getting dry and we need rain. I harrowed all of Gate cut and all of H ridge that is manured and plowed up in morn by 11 1/2 and planted some corn on E side of H ridge in eve. Shower came up from S and stopped me. It didn't rain but very little. Julia is lame in right shoulder or foot and ate very little all day. I have had a breaking out on arms and hip for a long time, which is bad now untill the kernals are all swollen and sore and last night I slept but little.

Fri. 7th. Showery and shiny all day from S. It rained a good rain late in eve. I planted cotton on H ridge and finished there at noon. I planted at Gate cut in eve and showers stopped me late. I hauled a load of wood from there late in eve.

Sat. 8th. Cloudy some all day from S and thundered around, threatened rain but only dropped some. I planted cotton in Gate cut and finished it in a 1 hour and a 1/2 by dinner in eve. I am very tired and sore with breaking out on me and kernal. Washed some clothes and drank some coffee late in eve. Alice brought Willie home in eve.

Sun. 9th. Bright, warm and SW wind in morn and rained from SW at 3 in eve. All but me went to Sunday School.

Mon. 10th. Cloudy some from NW in morn and very warm and clear in eve. I commenced at path and barred off corn in Cherry Cut down to below sassafras stump in morn. Nellie and Dixie hoed some corn by road by front gate with 2 deep furrows. Changing all of rows and finished opening it late in eve. I hauled a load of wood from road by Gate cut in late eve.

Tue. 11th. Bright and warm in morn and cloudy and threatened rain and sprinkled all eve till late and rained a good rain at dark from NE. I plowed in patch here by front gate where I opened yesterday breaking up with 4 furrows till 9 1/2 in morn and had to quit with sick headache. Nellie and Dixie hoed corn in Cherry Cut and finished all that I barred off yesterday by 10. Nellie went to Luckett's at 11 and got some Wizard oil and rubbed my head with it which relieved it some and the headache went off late in eve. I carried my plow to shop late in eve and had it pointed and layed.

Wed. 12th. Cloudy till 12 from E. then sun shined till 4, and it got dark and cloudy and commenced to rain just before sunset and rained hard with thunder and a great deal of lightning which lasted untill late in night. I plowed on hill around Cherry stump and E of it all day, breaking up land with 4 furrows. It is rather wet.

Thu. 13th. It turned cool last night and cool and cloudy and very wet with N wind all day. I made a chicken coop for Nellie and Willie and I cut some sprouts and bushes around Gate cut and we got some dewberries in Pine corner in morn. F Coon got a pup here at 11 1/2. Nellie and Rena walked to Pa's in eve and Dixie and Willie to Mr. D's. I fixed fence around manure pen and cleaned out fence corners from bay logs to H ridge in eve.

Fri. 14th. Cloudy and very cool, dropped and drizzled rain from N all day. I commenced to plow in morn E of Cherry stump and rain stopped me an hour after commencing. Mr. D came and stayed a while in morn. I plowed all eve where I left off in morn, breaking up with 4 furrows. Finished there and listed some SW of persimmon tree and hauled a load of wood from roadside late.

Sat. 15th. Bright and very cool, N wind. I plowed and finished all of ground SW and SE of persimmon tree to road by 11 in morn, breaking up with 4 furrows and commenced in patch here by fence gate on W side of my road. Bud came. He dined here. I plowed in eve and finished patch and harrowed it.

Sun. 16th. Clear and very cool in morn, wind from NE. All of us went to Sunday School in the morn. Had dinner and Nellie and I had spat about way they crossed creek. All of us went to Pa's in eve.

Mon. 17th. Bright, cool in morn, warmer in eve and cloudy; wind from SE in eve. Nellie and I had spat in morn and she went for her Pa and he came. I barred off corn in Cherry cut from sassafras stump down and finished at 12 1/2. I was late starting. Nellie and Dixie hoed some there in morn. I planted patch by front gate next to pasture in cotton in eve and hauled a load of wood late in eve.

Tue. 18th. Cloudy and windy all day. It showered at 2 in eve with thunder and again late in eve. I harrowed all of Persimmon cut by 9 1/2 in morn and planted cotton there balance of day. Nellie and Dixie hoed corn in Cherry cut in morn, but a shower ran us home at 2 1/2. I went back later.

Wed. 19th. Cloudy, warm and damp early in morn, and then bright till late in eve. Cloud came up from SW but only sprinkled. I planted cotton and finished Persimmon cut by 10 1/2 in morn. Nellie and Dixie hoed corn in Cherry cut on lower side in morn. I made a chicken coop in eve and barred off patch of corn by front gate on E side of road. Nellie and Willie walked to Pa's in eve.

Thu. 20th. Bright and pleasant. I plowed on SE corner of H ridge, breaking up with 4 furrows most of day. I cleaned up some there in eve and hauled a load of wood late. Nellie and Dixie hoed corn in Cherry cut in morn and finished all of it by 10. I was restless at night and got up and took 3 alt. pills in an hour after going to bed.

Fri. 21st. Warm and cloudy and S wind all day. Thundered far off in eve. I plowed in hollow on SE corner of H ridge and finished breaking it up by 9 1/2, and then cut some trees there in morn. Nellie and Dixie washed in morn. I shaped out a hoe handle and put two old handles in hoes for children. Hoed my potatoe bed in ground, washed and put on clean clothes, drank a cup of coffee, and hauled a load of wood from Pine corner late in eve.

Sat. 22nd. Cloudy and SW wind till 10 and then we had a storm of rain and little hail and wind from SW and another from NW between 11 and 12. Nellie and I and Pa were in town. We got a hat for Dixie and a dress and blue suit for Willie, 1 hoe, 1 file, 14 spls of thread and 1 yd black calico from Kaiser on credit. Pa came home with us by 2 in eve. Clear and pleasant in eve. I went to Grave's ford with Pa late in eve and Pa crossed there. I suffered with breaking out which burned a good deal all night but didn't itch any.

Sun. 23rd. Clear and cool, wind from NW. All of us went to Sunday School in morn. Mr. Brown preached. We went to Pa's and dined there; Tom Mc., J Chambers there. Alice and Clara came to creek with us in eve and Clara rode Julia into the creek at mouth of Walker branch and had to jump off and come back out. We crossed at our ford.

Mon. 24th. Bright and cool and wind from E. I set the hoe (which I got on Sat) and dressed the handle with my butcher knife and put the hoe on handle early and then I hoed corn with Nellie and Dixie in patch by front gate on E side of road and we finished it by 10 1/2 and then I went in field and got 2 sassafras poles to make a hen coop. I sawed the poles up after dinner and barred off nearly all of cut of corn below oak patch and hauled a load of wood late in eve.

Tue. 25th. Bright and pleasant, some hazy clouds and wind from SE. I took slight headache in night and took 3 alt pills about 1 o'clock. The headache left me after breakfast. I finished barring off corn below oats in 1 hour in morn early. Nellie and Dixie hoed corn there in morn and then I plowed up a patch for Willie for cotton and finished by 12. I hammered heel of my plow and harrowed all cotton ground broken up and not planted. I barred off sugar cane in eve.

Wed. 26th. Warm, cloudy and S wind, and thundered and showered around all eve but didn't rain here. I planted cotton in Willie's patch and H ridge in morn and finished it in hour and 1/2 after dinner and hoed some corn in hollow below oats and finished all that cut but 8 rows. Nellie and Dixie hoed there in morn. We hauled load wood from Cherry stump late in eve. Nellie took off yellow hen with 15 young guineas in eve.

Thu. 27th. A dark cloud came up from NW just after sunrise but only dropped or sprinkled some. It then cleared off and was bright and very warm balance of day. I barred off corn in Dewberry patch till 10 1/2 in morn. Nellie and Dixie hoed some there after finishing hollow below oats. Mr. Sims came there and told me that Dennis had come. I took my plow to shop at 11 and had 1/2 lay put on it and sharpened. Nellie rode to Pa's to borrow some coffee. I finished another hen coop just after dinner and barred off some corn in Dewberry cut and finished late in eve. I took off my flannel shirt at 2 o'clock today.

Fri. 28th. Bright and warm, wind from SW. I found our Kate cow with a calf N of patch here just after breakfast. I thinned corn in Dewberry cut in morn and finished all but little in lower corner. Nellie and Dixie washed in morn. I went to Morgan's in eve and found him in Cheerful Valley woods. I had a long ride and got home just before sunset. Was very tired. A cloud came up from NW just at dark and we had a good little shower with a hard wind from S which only lasted a few minutes.

Sat. 29th. A cloud came up from NW at daylight. It rained slowly till 8 but not enough to run and then cool and cloudy from N rest of day. Willie and I went on cart to town, started at 9 1/2. I saw Dr. Magruder and got prescription for eruption for sore hand. I got from Kaiser on 3 week's time 1 bbl flour $9, 1 bu meal $1.40, 1 sack corn $3.35, 5 pds coffee $1, 2 sugar 25 cts, 1 pair of coarse shoes $1.35 for Dixie, 1 gal. coal oil. We got some forks and poles for butter bean arbor in eve and I hauled a load of wood from Pine corner late in eve.

Sun. 30th. Bright and very cool, wind from N. All of us went to Sunday School in morn, came home to dinner. Nellie, Dixie, children, Cousin Dosia went to Floyd's. I crossed them over creek and went to Pa's. I went to Floyd's late in eve and came home with all of them. I took headache late in eve and had it all night. I commenced using wash on my sore hand and eruption last night and taking blood purifier.
